Maybe El Suprimo?

I also liked True Vine in Hampden.
Now I wanna know. One place was two places run by this old dude....AND it was right near where they filmed the scenes in Homicide where they're outside the station, at the FENCE...

Turner, Fabio, Spazz, Rex, Bryce, 7SD, Finewine and Woody when he is on the schedule. Of course, Acapulco when filling in.

Do you have the latest version? They did some server switcheroo a few years ago, so your version may still be pointing to the old server.

Medical software (including apps), learn as much about security as you can.

Agreed, with double emphasis on the security part.  I think a lot of this is the same as basic good-job advice: be willing to take an entry-level job, and if you turn out to be reliable and smart, you'll go somewhere.  Don't pretend to know about things you don't really know in your interview; on the other hand, find out what the company does before you go in, and study up as much as you can about what they do, what platforms they use, what their customer base is, that sort of thing.  If you have any writing skill at all, write a really good cover letter and speelcheck the letter and CV - that alone will put you ahead of probably half the competition.  Where are you located, or looking to go?

I've been coding for quite a while now. Mostly C for game dev in Los Angeles. Recently quit a C#/Asp.NET gig in Washington DC after 1 1/2 years. In the past, I have sent resumes off for entry level jobs, but have never heard back from any of them. I assume "Entry level" means among other things young and willing to work for cheap. So when my resume comes in and they see work history dating back to the late 90's, they pass. I'm now in Baltimore, but am assuming I will have to move due to there not being a ton of work here. As for "looking to go?", somewhere that is not a technology park in a shit suburb somewhere. That pretty much lops off half the jobs there. I'm thinking San Francisco is my best bet at this point. Which means ditch the Microsoft experience and learn Java and possibly it's enterprise-related technology. Dunno. Am sick of being in nomad-mode tho. My stereo w/ record player along with everything else has been in storage in Burbank since...shit...2007. Wish I felt closer to being settled. Ah well, could be worse.

Non-Music Shit / Software Dev career advise
« on: May 19, 2011, 01:06:05 PM »
Ok, we had some good lawyer career advise here. Now, how about some good termbo software developer career advise? Java or Microsoft? Mobile (Android/iPhone)? How does anyone get a job when everyone wants 3+ years? Especially, if one cannot sell oneself to save his life? What are the best cities and is it important to already be living there when you start to send resumes? Or do most not want to bother with a person relocating?

I was in the game industry and am attempting to strike out into the Enterprise or maybe the mobile dev world. Any advise?

Music Shit / Re: Tom Lax playlist from WFMU today

Great show...that Doden track went from totally annoying to totally entrancing.
WFMU already completely rules but it would be cool to have a portable player d/l available...

Do you mean an mp3 of the show? Go to any WFMU playlist, right click and save the "MP3 - 128K" link. It will save a .m3u file. This is just a text file which contains a link to an mp3 file. For a 3 hour show, it's about 170MB. I think those 128k shows are around for 4 weeks? 6 weeks? Something like that.

Deadwood S01E01

Now that I finished Sopranos I need a new show to watch, I kind of lost interest in the Prisoner so I am giving Deadwood another shot, so far so good.

If Sopranos is your favorite, then you haven't seen The Wire yet...? If not, that would be my recommendation.

well, you got the silent movie theater just south of melrose on fairfax. http://www.cinefamily.org/calendar/index.html

headline records is right around the corner at 7706 melrose. it's all punk rock records. nothing spectacular though.

also down the street from the silent movie theater is the family book store which is a cool place. 436 n. fairfax

i'm probably not the best person to ask about restaurants in that area. not sure.

west hollywood kinda sucks.

Haven't been there in many years, but I also have a soft spot for the New Beverly.  http://www.newbevcinema.com

From NYTimes:

Tesla [the electric car] is also financing the development of the Model S with deposits from people on the waiting list, who can pay $40,000 to reserve one of the first 2,000 cars or $5,000 for later cars.

For those who are worried about what will happen to their deposits if the car is never produced, since the money will be spent on development and not held in escrow, Mr. Musk said: ?The worst-case scenario is they would lose their money. They are at risk.?

Can't wait for the Tesla preorder fallout.

This guy is in Santa Monica. At least he was in 2000/01. Was always by the 7-11 on 7th & Wilshire. Co-worker used to call him "Biscuit".

I like watching the first one with the volume down and pretend he is calmly threatening the woman. Kinda like an audition for Raging Bull. Sadly, I suspect that fist shaking had a down-side -- fucking with the auto focus.

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid

hes so creepy in this movie.  and he throws knives.  soundtrack is sick.

He does? How could I forget that? Just remember the cans. "Beans". Probably thrown in there to give him a pay bump. That is why I am pro-SAG. The end.

They've been a 100% waste of a pretty underrated rhythm section for two and a half decades now. They were at least an 80% waste of that rhythm section in the years before that.

I've heard just 30 seconds of that "Put on Your Boots" song everytime the commercial for their new album's on TV. Could it sound anymore like a conscious ploy to make a dancefloor relevant record for so-called hipster youth? Shouldn't they give that up?

You mean they have officially ditched their White Stripes phase?  Hahahahahahahahahahahafu ckers. U2, that is. Not youse guys. Just want to make that clear.

This one time anthony kiedis came to an S Dubzzz show. He came into our mini van and smoked us out while telling us about how we can make our sound more universal and then he told us that we are the next best thing after RCHP.

Was getting an extra key made at Los Feliz Lock & Key late 90's when in comes Kiedis. He looks at all the safes that are on the customer side of the counter (small place). I say something like "that ought to do, don't ya think?" He replies, "Na, I'm looking for some bank vault shit" and strolls on out. He may have been shirtless, though I'm probably conflating that with one of their videos.

Lots of Los Feliz celebs. David Lynch, Vince Vaughn.

Talked to Bob Odenkirk at a party. He had just moved to LA. Perhaps it was just after the first season of Mr Show? Really nice guy.

Sherman Hemsley buying socks for his niece I want to say? This was at the KMart on 3rd across the street from Farmers Market. Before they tore down half of it. Farmers Market, that is. And before I found out he was a huge prog rock fan. Sherman Hemsley, that is. Had I known, I may have asked him for some Gong stories or something.

Andy Dick at a bar in Long Beach. He was with 3 or 4 girls. I didn't know his name at the time and, while drunk, said something like "Hey guy from that show". Couple of months later read some interview with him saying something self-deprecating along the lines of "going to bars where people don't know my name". Could have been a coincidence.

Seth Green at House of Pies, janitor guy from Scrubs at House of Pies (guy is easily 6 1/2' tall), C Ricci not House of Pies, H Graham not House of Pies, etc, blah blah blah

Non-Music Shit / Re: FUCK the jena 6!!!
« on: March 25, 2009, 01:24:41 AM »
what does this have to do with the jena 6

african american issues and civil rights.  jena six were a bunch of black thugs who kicked an unconscious white kid in the head until he was almost dead, and they turned it into a civil rights issue.  well, i consider this to be much more of a travesty of justice.

It started as a civil rights issue when the white kids hung nooses in the trees after a black kid asked the principal in an assembly if he could eat his lunch in an area where all the white kids typically ate. From there it escalated. The white kid "was knocked out but walked out of a hospital after two hours of treatment for a concussion and an eye that was swollen shut".
