No, it was Jeff from Irving Klaw Trio, a buddy band of NBT. It probably seemed like it was was someone from the New Bads w/ 4 of the first 10 cassettes being NBT related.

Union Pole Tapes was a mostly cassette label from early to mid 90s based in Olympia and later in Portland. They put out a bunch of weirdo music that some people here might be interested in: Noggin, Truman's Water, Neil Campbell, A Band, Azalia Snail and so on.

The guy who ran the label, Jeff Fucillo of Irving Klaw Trio, is now making all their releases available on a blog.

Check it out at http://unionpoletapes.blogspot.com/

In the Pineys is a total classic.

My only criticism is that they let that Grifter's related label sell that dumb promo vid for Waddle and Daub. Total waste of money for something that should just be up on Youtube.

You might like Nation of Ulysses. That was pre Cupid Car Club w/ the 3 guys minus Kim Thompson plus 2 other dudes. Their alb Plays Pretty for Baby is pretty solid. It's closing in on 2 decades and it still holds up.

Does anyone here know whether the recent reissue has the following soundbite:

"I think everyone in the world should have a band and there would be a show where everyone plays"
"That would be wicked"

???

I know the Domino dbl cd has some different sequencing than the Homestead lp and I'm wondering if this gem survived. Because if it didn't, what's the point?

Tom Scharpling played the Felt Letters song on The Best Show on WFMU last week. He called it the "world debut".

What do you all recommend for the neophyte?

I've enjoyed the stuff Tom Lax has played on Brian Turner's program, but I'm not so hot on the Vertical Slit cd Siltbreeze put out.

One of the questions I was trying to answer (and maybe some of you know this) is at what point did David Thomas develop his ideas regarding rock music as an expression of American identity. I think in the Wire interview I mentioned he even goes as far to say that if it's not made by Americans, it's not really rock music.

Shaun,

Thanks for posting that. I always really enjoyed his interviews in the 90s (esp. the one where he tells some writer from The Wire why he prefers John Cougar Melloncamp over the Smiths) and I was wondering if his responses were as good back when Pere Ubu was in its prime.

Can anyone here point me toward some late 70's to early 80's Pere Ubu interviews that are online? My google searches are failing me.

It would be much appreciated.
