Music Shit / Re: Shrink Wrapping Records

400 degrees sounds really hot. At work, we run our shrink tunnel at 250-300 and let the conveyer run a little slower. Vinyl presses only get the PVC up to around 360 degrees. I'd be wary of taking them to a place that usually doesn't do records.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Paypal alternatives?
« on: November 28, 2011, 10:08:20 PM »
If you wanted to avoid paypal altogether when selling, I'd say your best bet would be to say you are only going to do direct sales by check, money order or well concealed cash. You take more risk that way but, whatever. Most people will balk at that, so you would do most of your sales to distros and stores. The idea would be to make sure your distros/stores list is strong and make sure they all have your records in stock the day the records go on sale. If you are doing 500 or so runs, I can't imagine that would be a big problem. That's how I'd do it anyway.

Music Shit / Re: 2 guitars no bass

As a dude in on the of the premier 2 gtr, no bass bands playing right now I feel as though I have some insight into the matter. Here is the secret of playing in a 2 Gtr, no bass band...

To play w/ 2 gtrs and no bass player, you absolutely need a 60's univox superfuzz or new superfuzz clone.

I will build you a new superfuzz clone for $400. It will have the correct transistors and I will bias them correctly.

PM me here.

The overworked staff is too busy with imminent Cheater Slicks, El Jesus, and Psandwich, releases.

Not overworked, just underpaid.

Releases'll probably go
Psandwitch
Slicks Live Vol.1
El Jesus
Outer Spacist LP is in the can as well, but Rep has had it for a little bit.

Got a new Bassholes record in the works. Just needs vocals and mixed. Lotsa polyrythms on that one. Really weird and good.
New Cheater Slicks is coming along. Maybe 50% done? It's great.

The Tascam 388 is great. The 688 is good too, but both of those are gonna run between $350 and $500

You should look for a 238...rack mount tascam beast. Super duty quality.

Currently running a Ramsa Wr 8118 and an otari mx5050 MKIII 8 track. 388 is ready to roll also.

I've been looking for a 238 or 234 for a couple of months now. Those things look boss. Hard for me to justify getting another 8-trk recorder, but man.

Those Ramsas look boss, was a pussyhair from buying one when I found my Soundcraft. I currently use either a teac 16trk 1" or an MCI-JH-110-8c 8trk 1" to a Soundcraft 8000 series, mixdown to an MCI JH-110 1/4" 2 trk. 688 is on deck whenever I need it. Used on all of the Puffy Areola recordings. At this point, it's not home recording anymore tho.

We have a pretty piecemeal setup in our house -

Drums:

Mics ---> some weird Sure DI box thing -----> The analogue mxer part of a Yamaha MD8 recorder ----> Track 1 of a Studer A62 two track machine ---> ADAT

Bass is the same but onto track 2. We just overdub guitars and vocals straight onto the ADAT after that. The Studer is so unreliable, we just use it as a compressor for the drums and bass until it gets a proper service. For full live bands, we have to record via the Sure DI thing, onto ADAT then mix it down onto the Studer. First method sounds much better though even though it's not live

I'd love a 4 or 8 track reel to reel

Hey, would you wanna sell that Studer or trade it for a mixer or 8-track cassette recorder or something?

If you've got a mixer, teac 80-8's are super nice, but they aren't that cheap either.

Fostex R8's are kind of shitty but are good enough and you can sometimes find them in the $150 price range.

An ADAT might not be a bad idea. You can get one of those for, like $50.

Music Shit / Re: Moon Studios, Sacramento

This is the most extensive thing I could find using google.

http://www.newsreview.com/sacramento/content?oid=14608

So, Moon was still in a garage and my best guess is he still had a teac 8-track and maybe some Neumann 87's when The Twinkeyz came in.

Does anyone know if there are pictures of either of the Moon spaces anywhere?

I'm looking for any info at all (besides "The Twinkeyz recorded there") about Moon Studios Sacramento or David Houston.

I'm curious about their gear, room, whatever. My reasons are tedious and selfish.

Any info that anybody has, including dumb internet links, would be much appreciated.

RECORDING GEAR

That JH-16 back there looks pretty nice. I use MCI decks every day for about everything. I keep mine good and tuned up and they sound real good. Not 3M good, but real good, especially if they are set up well.

Hopefully it's not just "the tape machine that sits in the corner all out of calibration" Prolly the model w/ the input transformers maybe the model /w the Quick Punch Technology. Calibrate that thing and use it.

To hell w/ that mixing gear.

$1,000

Huh?

Electronics nerds will recognize Dual General Purpose IC PC board this thing is built on. $2.99 for 2 of them. This can easily be made with $7 worth of radio shack parts.

Burning Bus.  So so sick.  Ashevillians killin' it.

They (ABB) cut an LP at the CDR studio on Sunday that is really crazy deranged.

Turks did Weekend and Jim Motherfucker at Bobo on Friday. The Necropolis set ended with Ron House, Don B and C Lutzko all singing Louie Louie w/ us.

My only gripe about the weekend is that there should have been a proper Ron House band in the mix.
