Looks like a case of lowering the bar a fuckload in order to then raise it a bit.

BEST EVER: Down In The Ground. Where it belongs.

Someone must have scraped Toby from the boot of this mortal coil by now surely... what a specimen.

I like the new Case Studies a lot.

Quite dissapointed with this one. Big fan of The Duchess & The Duke but to me this sound like every other boring, MOJO & Uncut approved singer/songwriter. Decent I guess but the magic is gone

Edit: Just realized this is the second Case Studies album. Might be a tad unfair to compare them to The Duchess & The Duke which are a rather different beast.

Have to agree with you too Marko. The D&D were hit and miss at the best of times - but their good songs were/are the real deal. Case Studies is just a total miss - only got halfway through both albums so maybe its bottom heavy & i missed the good stuff but i doubt it. Just maudlin' along - no diversity/anything of interest in what i DID hear from both.

On an aside and someone else doing the folk-songwritery buzz and mighty well in recent times, is  - Sonny Sunset. Liked his Death Cream single and the first album was decent enough but then i thought he went a downhill after that - Hit After Hit (which didn't have a single hit on the thing), then the Sandwitches material which was just more middle-of-the-road-whatever and doing that 100 Records project, maybe caused the well to run dry. Think he broke up with the missus and then like any good breakup, that in turn inspired him to write Longtime Companion which was a real deft jump to some country-inspired material. Really well recorded/produced that one with some really strong material. Seemed to fly under a few people's radars - probably coz the stuff just before that was all a bit meh. And the new LP (Antenna from The Afterworld -sp?) is, at least in the short time I've been listening to it, - just as good; maybe better than LC. He's changed it up again and its a bit more psych-countrified. Worth checking out if anyone did like his early stuff and bailed when he started saturating the world with a whole bunch of random side-project shit.

Finally - great news! That first LP was fuckin ace. Any Euro distros getting this?

bright ideas saturdays and the turning tide (squirmy)
deep time s/t (hardly art)
noh mercy s/t (superior viaduct)
woolf the right way to play (la vida es un mus)
Only heard that Deep Time this morning on the commute to work ...absolute utter trust-fund GUFF!... So bad i came on here just to say it wasted a good twenty minutes of my life; and to suggest other people avoid a similar fate... I bet that vocalist thinks she's the fucking shit. And the band actually thinks they're actually writing songs to accompany her whooping cacophony.... Definitely a Pitchfork 8+'er though I'd reckon...

Be warned.
interesting. i reckon of the four records i listed it would come in only third in the whooping cacophany stakes.

No surprises there then. Fair enough.

Whooping Cacophony!

It reminds me of a VIZ comic Top Tip from last month: "Music fans. Make your own Florence And the Machine album by locking an owl in a wind chime shop"

Spot on.

Lindy Blaskey & The Lavells - Let It Be - wild, fucked organ, crazed harmonica, Stooge-punk drawl vox, lots of whoa!-ing, kickass solo, etc. = unhinged freakbeat goodness

Think this is the link on Youtube - not sure of the upload quality coz of firewalls and stuff: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IY5Q8JvQhU

this reissue is fuggin' great!
http://www.onekindfavor.net/ available here.

the Kenneth Higney, after a few spins, is OK, but the sound ceremony LP hits on a lot of levels.

Totally agree - just seen that Sound Ceremony got a re-issue. Beats Attic Demonstration hands down for me - way more interesting and the songs are better. Don't get the big deal about the latter. Impressive that it was all done without overdubs I guess (no surprises there though all things considered) - sounds a tad more gimmicky cause of that too but - plus, it's a real fucking downer.
