The Sunday Painters were wide-ranging DIY art-punks. Operating out of Wollongong, Australia in the early 80s, they seemed to want to be every band from the Velvet Underground to King Crimson to the Sex Pistols to Throbbing Gristle. And they wrote catchy, often beautiful, songs, the greatest of which are also commentaries on the costs of containing such multitudes.

But few people heard them. Wollongong was a working-class town, and the Painters had to make and distribute their three singles and two LPs in editions of 250 or 500 copies on their own Terminal Records via EMI custom. Combine that scarcity with their rapid shifts from pop to punk to industrial, and it?s easy to understand that anybody who even found the records might have been daunted by the vast claim of a band tethered just enough to London and New York to know what was afoot there, but sufficiently distant to go off on a marsupial evolution all their own.

Now, Whats Your Rupture?, in partnership with Terminal Records, presents an LP compilation of the Painters? three DIY singles. Transferred from the original reels and remastered. Included are an oversized, newsprint poster and a download code for the LP?s tracks, plus nine more from the handmade cassette of a 1983 show recorded live at Melbourne?s Venetian Room.

Booming drums, krazy melodies, Bowie/Milk 'N' Cookies soundalike vocals, made-up words, made-up names. There's a saxophone in there too, and about 20 pounds of makeup, belt buckles, clashing patterns and stripes galore. If we told you these were unearthed in a dusty box of tape reels in the back of a junk shop, you'd have to believe us. Because they were? Really? Instead of packaging this killer 7" single inside of a giant question mark, we're delivering it to you in a fabulous poster sleeve, designed by Bjorn Copeland (Black Dice) and screen printed by Keegan Cooke. Love Backed By Force registers as an instant classic of outsider folk-pop, a true mutant of an LP that never sounds the same way twice. It may take a few listens for its pull to take effect, but once you settle into its orbit, it?ll be difficult to remove yourself. Music will never sound the same again, and in the world of Love Backed By Force, it doesn?t even sound the same from song to song on the same album.  Layer upon layer of close-talking lyrics are buffeted by mind-clogging guitar (even the acoustic tracks create immense blocks of light-absorbing interference in your brain), synthesizer abuse, and rudimentary drumming, made by a man who regularly discussed seeing ghosts to general disbelief.

The surprise breakthrough of the Floridas Dying Party Platter. The Pops were a band from New York. They numbered somewhere between 9-15 people, I think. I have never seen them but legend has it, they would only play birthday parties. The album was recorded on 8 jam boxes, or so I hear by some genius with the first name of Liam. Liam?something or other. They would not tell me much. The sound is shrill, no frill, clanky, skronky, funky (?), party jams?and is very very very limited. Pudding Pops from 2005.

A little background:
Jethro Skull" is the debut EP from Texas party-rockers/mini-bike gang Silver Shampoo. The A-side consists of the title track "Jethro Skull" and "Contest". It's What's Your Rupture's estimation that many a silent night in neighborhoods across America will be interrupted by the drunken slurring of "Jeeettthhhhrrrooooooo Skkkkkkuuuulllll". The B-side includes "Sonny Barger" and "Dogs". These are both subliminally sublime garage pop gems. "Sonny Barger" is a concise little masterpiece of bass slides, twinkling piano and "B-B-B-B-Barger" chants. "Dogs" is a sure favorite with pet lovers and simple math practitioners alike.
