New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / SNAKE - AL MONTFORT DEBUT TAPE
« on: November 30, 2013, 08:26:05 PM »

Snake is Al Montfort's first solo recording, an 8 song cassette released on Hideotic (UV).

It's a little awkward to run a list of bands with someone I've been playing with for over a decade, but if you are familiar with Lower Plenty, Total Control, Straightjacket Nation, Dick Diver, UV Race or East Link, you are familiar with Snake. These bands have played and jammed every week for the last decade, not to mention overseas touring and making a movie. Al also has a great jacket with Princess Diana on the back.

Over the last year, using the sarangi, assamese buffalo horn flute, sax and been, a zoom drum machine and GUITAR, Al started accumulating solo recordings and it's one of the best tapes of 2013.

This a very eclectic collection of songs, all strong. There's a song that sounds like live Alan Vega that closes with a passage of fractured noise and bursts into a cascade of aforementioned Indian instruments, for instance. Moments of mesmerising drone. Atmospheric, dark psych-folk. ''A journey''.

Recorded over the last twelve months in Melbourne and while travelling in India, Snake is a very powerful selection of songs. Are you my main man? Are you now? Are you now?

Limited to 45 copies, don't sleep. Buy it here: distortmag.bigcartel.com

OUT NEXT WEEK...

THE GRABBIES LIVE 7" (DISTORT40 / FIR???)

"I learnt English from listening to punk rock records... that's how I know to say fuck you, fuck you, fuck you and fucking die."
About a decade ago, a couple of Italian immigrants arrived on American soil, and they ploughed, and they worked, and the fruits of their labour was a punk band called The Grabbies. This record is a document of the band playing live, and it stands with live recordings like those of SS and h100's: raw, volatile, horrible music, with some of the best in between song banter you'll ever hear. It was released at the time as a bootleg by a smart American man, and this is not the super deluxe 180 gram vinyl reissue, but strives for the low production values of the original. Granted that it's 2013, it's probably worse. Listen to this when bathing your litter, and appreciate the limitless potentials of human experience.

AVON LADIES AVON LADIES 7" (DISTORT39 / FIR???)

Avon Ladies were the result of 5 people coming together from different bands of noteriety: Destruction Unit, The Elders, Gay Kiss, h100's, Upstab, The Ruiners. 5 people with behavioral problems who played loud music and somehow managed to release a few analog recordings and do a tour. This is their second 7" record. They've now broken up. Life is full of excitement and wonder.

Here's a song from The UV Race with a 100% money back guarantee that if you give it to a wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, love interest, sexy uncle, your mum, the lollipop lady down your road, teacher, grandma, Leonardo Dicaprio, anyone named Heather or Mike Judge, you will be loved for ever with no chance of betrayal, divorce or misery.

Just got from plant and making covers this next week: 500 copies. This will go out to Distort subscribers in the following week, and a limited number will be for sale from missinglink.net.au. (I'll let you know when if you aren't a subscriber and want to mailorder) or from ECSR at their shows. Check: distortcult.blogspot.com

No wholesale or trades, sorry, not enough of them going around.

Both bands are playing 'There's a Lot Of It Going Around', a song originally by Deathwish (who later became Chosen Few and recorded this on their only 7", this is an early recording in a hard rock / glam style stomp). The ECSR version burns like you'd expect. Chosen Few are one of the best ever punk bands, their record is the second best Australian punk record, this song is pure.

There are subs available for US$40 (worldwide) for ten issues (8 zines, 2 7"s), the next 7" is from Brisbane's INSURGENTS (hardcore, good hardcore, like DEEP WOUND hardcore). Paypal: distorttheworld@gmail.com.

I've heard her name referenced in fanzines peripheral to TB interests, especially regarding Lester Bangs.
Recommendations on which books / essays to start with?

Music Shit / ECSR - RUSH TO RELAX
« on: February 10, 2010, 04:45:43 AM »
The new album is almost pressed, and I've been enjoying it a lot. Their first two LPs are excellent, and among the best of Australian music in any era, but I always felt they were more of a singles / live band. This record is their best solid ALBUM.
Unlike the usual 2nd to 3rd album jump, it's not a huge leap, but it's something like exactly what you wished most bands would do in between 2nd and 3rd. Like, how much do you wish there was an LP between Eternally Yours and Prehistoric Sounds? Chairs Missing and 154? Funhouse and Raw Power? etc. etc. etc. Their best set I saw recently had them pounding away at a couple of key based jams which really illustrated they were ready to make a jump, and I think this record captures them before they make it.
The sound is their most distinctive and really captures their live presence, the songs range from 80's punk to schmaltzy garage to krauty jams, but they don't falter at any point. I'm not really reviewing it here, I just wanted to share some FAN appreciation for my favourite new record...

Music Shit / Pink Reason Aus Tour
« on: November 04, 2009, 03:04:59 AM »
Pink Reason toured here in August / September, and I helped organise the tour. I have been flat out busy since but when cleaning my office for the first time in ages I found this cutting from a local street press. Thought some of you might get a kick out of it, and when I find other shit I'll post it.
