Music Shit / S.A.S.- "Warlords"
« on: March 17, 2011, 08:25:31 AM »
Does anyone know anything about this record?  I picked up a copy recently for $1 and just want to find out more about it.  It was released on Cleopatra Records (Australia) in '86-'87.  The catalogue number is CLP231.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.  I have looked around and can't seem to find out anything about it.

Just go to the site and click on The Tape Store section... and then once you know what you want, email me at scotchtapes AT hotmail DOT com  The store is not set up for the sale... although you can order 3 items and in a note, let me know what you want for the 4th item.

Just trying to clear out some room.  Scotch is moving into some new digs shortly and the less I have to pack, the better.

Non-Music Shit / Name my new label and win!!!
« on: February 23, 2011, 06:08:58 PM »
So... I have decided to start a new label specifically for experimental music.  Everything will be super limited and super weird.  8-tracks, weird shaped lathes, cassettes with strange packaging... Most releases will be 25 copies.  Some even less...

I need a name.  The person who suggests the name I use will get a copy of the first 10 releases...

Have at it...

Music Shit / Favourite All-Time Canadian Band
« on: February 20, 2011, 06:11:39 AM »
Some of my favourites of all-time are hHead, Eric's Trip and jellyfishbabies.

Who you like?

The more recent ones would have to include TROPICS, Mess Folk, Fist City and The Famines

These are availble to order now at www.scotchtapes.ca  If you are a store or distro and want to carry any of these, please email me at scotchtapes AT hotmail DOT com for wholesale rates...

Available for pre-order is a new 12" one-sided lathe from Lonely Wholesome.  Some of you might remember LW from the Scotch/ Young Guv lathe series.  For those of you who do not know know, this is Jonah Falco's (Fucked Up) new band.  Their single for the Scotch/ Guv series is my favourite song so far in 2011 and this lathe is putting that to the test.  The first track, "Who Killed Anna?" is a total ripper... These are limited to 100 copies and will ship in March as well.

Now, I guess I should release some tapes too... I have 4 new tape releases from Bucketseat, Swim Ignorant Fire, Swan Districts and Hate Male/ Eyes In The Furnace split.

Bucketseat hail from Nanaimo, BC and feature Marcus Hastings of The Paperboxes.  Similar to his previous band, Bucketseat are a little more blues driven but just as dirty.  This is the best two-piece blues/ rock/ garage band in Canada.  Hands down.  This self titled release is limited to 100 copies.  Make sure to check out Bucketseat on their cross- Canada tour in March!  Available now...

Swim Ignorant Fire first released something on Scotch back in the early days.  It was a split with Jesse Langdale and was one of my favourite weirdo releases ever.  This new direction is a good one for S.I.F.  Its beautifully structured and might be the best ambient-ish album I've heard in awhile.  Strange noises littered amongst the sounds of angels.  This is a must have for noise/ ambient/ strange fans.  Limited to 100 copies.  Available now...

Swan Districts call Australia home.  These kids from down under make me think of what This Will Destroy You would sound like if they were broke and recorded in their bedrooms.  This is not a bad thing.  On the contrary.  The lo-fi feel of this post-rock oddity makes me wonder how much more this band can accomplish.  I see big things for these talented Aussies.  Limited to 50 copies in beautiful, hand-made sleeves.  Available now...

Hate Male is a UK noise legend.  Eyes In The Furnace is a brand new noise act.  Together they create one of the harshest, violent releases ever on Scotch.  Hate Male have been brutalizing musical instruments/ pedals/ drum machines for over a decade with releases on some of the genres best labels.  Eyes In The Furnace is a new deal from the ever prolific Philip Tarr (Mess Folk, Generic Shit) who hails from Canadian Toxic Waste Capital, Sydney, Nova Scotia.  This will probably melt you tape deck.  Limited to 100 copies... Available now...

I am posting this on here for a friend.  His label, Geographing, is killing it up here in Canada... You can order it at www.geographing.net  If you are a distro/ store and want to carry this monster, email Jarrett at geographingrecords@gmail.com

"New face-and-ear-melting split 7 inch joining Alberta & B.C's finest on one slab of wax.
Fist City's A Side attacks with three songs, continuing their stellar release history and building off their full-length "Hunting You" on Deadbeat. Guitars squeal and drums clatter while this music rattles your cage. Iggy Pup is your new favorite song.

BUT DON'T JUST TAKE MY WORD FOR IT: Here's what Fucked Up's Damien Abraham had to say about Fist City in The NME:

"...think a more danceable Bikini Kill doing a Desperate Bicycles-type thing.
I would never have guessed that something so sonically perfect could come out
of a place as small as Lethbridge, Alberta...
shame on me for thinking like that.
This is the best new band I have heard in a long time."

Listen to the man!
(Wow, Geographing Records artists endorsed in the same magazine that would have you believe the Arctic Monkeys were the greatest band of all time!)

Fuck///Cleaner///Iggy Pup

Timecopz take Side B to town, showing why they're the best thing going in Vancouver's garage rock underbelly. Two songs recorded to video editing software ring out and are gone so quickly you'll wish there had been room for a 3rd track here too. Mind-blowing, epic rock and roll for the future.
I don't have a fancy NME pullquote for them, but I should-- this band slays. They're going to be huge.
Need further proof? What if I said they feature members of Bummer High and Manic Attracts? SOLD.

Shit City/// Get Away"

Scotch and No Vacation Records (Montreal) have joined forces to bring you an incredible lathe series. This is a subscription-based deal where you will recieve a new lathe every 4-5 weeks. These are super limited and super cool. Each record is cut on 7" square plexiglass. All cover art will be printed on heavy vellum so the whole package will be translucent.  The cost of making these are pretty high but well worth it.  For those of you that got copies of the Young Governor- "Pizza Face" lathe or the We All Inherit The Moon lathe, you know how unique looking these records are.  There are only 50 copies of each being made and with 10 going to each band involved, there are only 40 subscriptions available. This is first come, first serve. The bands involved are...

Factums

Teenage Panzerkorps

Horrid Red

Passion Party

The Dreams

Death Domain

FNU Ronnies

Gary War

This may not be the exact order in which they ship. But as far as I know, Factums IS the first in the series and will ship in March.  The shipping cost is included for Canada/ US.  Everywhere else will cost you an extra $25.  As Brett at No Vacation can tell you, shipping in Canada is ridiculous.

You can get your subscription now at www.scotchtapes.ca .  Go to The Tape Store section...

These will not last long...

Reviews
"Since their debut 7? on Convulsive Records in 2009 the Pheromoans have been leading the pack of the new batch of great UK diy punk bands and have released some of the most exciting singles in recent memory on labels such as Savoury Days, Night People and Sweet Rot." (convulsiverecords.tumblr .com)

"I?d happily Last FM tag Pheromoans with ?lo-fi?, as well as ?post-punk? (avoid ?garage rock?, though ? this is another point they make in their blog post), but the band don?t restrict themselves to one genre alone." (basementfever.blogspot.c om)

For all you Canadian kids, I am getting some copies for the Scotch Distro.

Scotch has lots to talk about today. 5 new releases plus an updated distro section!!! First out of the gate is the next installment in the Scotch/ Young Guv lathe series featuring ACTUAL WATER!  This Toronto band have been killing it for the past few years.  This double flexi release is no different.  The first track, "Latoya" is a total ripper and features Guv himself on backing vocals.  The second lathe is an a cappela version of the same song... "Wait???  I am listening to BOYZ II MEN???"  Hardly...

This is strictly limited to 50 copies.  ONE PER CUSTOMER!!!  For realz... Anyone who orders more than one loses the extra money, gets a not-very-nice email from some guy I know who loves berating total strangers and helps pay for my next vacation.  This will ship sometime mid-February-ish...

We also have another limited lathe out this week from an amazing Calgary-based band, Grown-Ups!!! Grown-Ups are one of those bands who can best be described as "one of those bands who don't fuck around!"  Nothing fancy.  Just blistering rock jams that make you want to drive fast and smash stuff... or smash stuff while driving fast.  This 2-track flexi lathe features songs about their favourite alien, E.T. and their favourite hangout in Calgary, The Tubby Dog.  This lathe is limited to just 50 copies.  It is also ONE PER CUSTOMER!!!  If you order more than one, I am keeping the extra money to pay for a vacation somewhere warmer than this god forsaken tundra.  It is also a little pricey-er than most flexis.  This is due to the labour intensive packaging.  My scissor hand hates me...  This will ship in mid-Feb-ish as well...

Now, since its called Scotch Tapes, I should talk about some tapes...

Dan Melchior- "King of Sheep"- Dan Melchior is a true artist.  After years of trudging through garage rock ditches and releasing music on some of the best marginal labels on the planet, he still loves releasing small runs on shitty little labels like Scotch Tapes.  This tape is Dan at his absolute best.  Tracks like Sea Lion Man" and the title track, "King Of Sheep" remind me of why I think Dan is a fucking genius.

This tape is strictly limited to 100 copies.  Stores/ Distros please email me about wholesale...

Also, as some of you know, Letha, Dan's partner has been diagnosed with cancer.  If you click back to my main page, you will find a link to a site where you can donate to Dan & Letha.  She is in a tough fight and every little bit you can donate helps.  I am charging $1 more for each of these tapes as well, with that $1 going to Dan & Letha.  If you don't want to pay the extra $1, tough shit... Its a great album from a great artist... and its $1!!!  Don't get bacon on your next cheeseburger!

Strange Attractor- "s/t"-  The music scene in Northern Ontario, Canada can be hit or miss.  There have been some great bands that have come out of this area in the past but its not known as a burgeoning music hotbed.  This might be about to change with Sudbury, Ontario's Strange Attractor.  This cassette is a collection of garage punk classics that were previously released on a 10" (P-Trash) and a 7" (FDH)  Now you can get all these track on one release!  This is strictly limited to 100 copies.  Distros/ stores get in touch about wholesale.

Shark Toys/ Plasma Centre split- Shark Toys must have listened to a ton of Talking Heads records growing up... and that is certainly not a bad thing.  The opening track of this tape is what fun sounds like.  Track two is an acoustic number that has had my toes tapping since I first heard it... I've checked in with my doctor.  Its not a seizure/ stroke.  The flip side of this split single features Plasma Centre.  I think they may have had the same record collection growing up because I hear Talking Heads in their music as well... but I think somewhere along the way they caught whiff of The Pixies too.  I see big things from both of these bands in 2011.  They are touring the Western coast of the US this winter.  Go see them!!!  This tape is limited to 100 copies.  Stores/ Distros, email me...

I have also got the distro back up and running.  I basically moved that section of Scotch to Discogs.  Its made things easier for me and for the customer.  Click on my distro page on the left side of the website and it will direct you to my discogs site.  There are over 300 items now available with more being added daily.  If you live in Canada/ US and want me to carry a title, email me and I will see what I can do.

Thanks,
Al

After a few days of staring at a screen, the distro section is now done.  I am just using discogs to host all my distro titles.  There are about 50 more titles that still have to be added but since they are not in the database, they will take awhile longer...

But so far there are 240-ish titles for you to look through.

This will be growing all the time with new titles added weekly.

http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?seller=scotchtapes&sort=artist%2Casc

There is everything from garage to punk to pop to noise to the unexplained on this site...

And if you are Canadian and want me to carry certain titles from Europe/ Anywhere else, just email me.

Non-Music Shit / discogs help needed
« on: January 26, 2011, 10:38:47 AM »

The long awaited split 7" from NYC's Talk Normal and Vancouver's Shearing Pinx is upon us.  The tests have been approved and will be shipped to me this week.  For those of you who have been completely oblivious to good music the past few years, Talk Normal and Shearing Pinx have been putting out some of the most unique and genre defining sounds in North America.  Talk Normal, with their off-kilter drumming and repetitive guitar squeeks produce something that is undefineable.  They have toured with the likes of Sonic Youth and are headed for bigger things in 2011.  Shearing Pinx might possibly be the most prolific band in Canada.  They have dozens of releases on some of my favourite labels like Divorce (best label in Canada) and Isolated Now Waves.  Blending noise with punk, these guys are the kings of Vancouver's weirdo scene.

This slab of wax is strictly limited to 300 copies.  It will NOT be re-issued.  Cover art was done by the super talented, CM Ruiz who has done cover art for bands like Myelin Sheaths.  This will ship sometime in mid-February.  Distros/ stores, please get in touch about wholesale orders. Do not sleep on this as I expect sales to be brisk...

The next lathe from Scotch is from The Island.  The Island is a strange and dark collaboration from Steve Howe (Montreal) and the legend, Mike Watt!  "Listen To The Warning" is a track from their upcoming LP possibly released on Southpaw Records (another favourite label!)  Steve normally makes music under the Swenson Clane moniker while Watt really needs no introduction.  The Minutemen, fIREHOSE, The Stooges... Watt is about as close to an icon as I can think of.  This is likely the most limited thing Watt has ever been attached to with only 50 copies available.  This will also ship in mid-February.  Limited to one per customer.

And since I am a tape label, I should probably release a tape.  This one is a doozy... Lab Coast (Calgary) remind me of Guided By Voices with some Dinosaur Jr./ Sebadoh thrown in there... "Wilding" is a re-issue of their super limited, self released tape.  These 11 tracks harken back to the good 1990's.  Lab Coast features members of The Broken Spoon Duo.  This is limited to just 50 copies... half of our normal run so this will not last long.

You can get all of these now at www.scotchtapes.ca in The Tape Store section.
