Non-Music Shit / Ground wire question?

I've been getting this low hum coming through my speakers. I thought the ground wire must have some loose and it did. I hooked it back up to my reciver and the hum will stop, but now one of my speakers cuts out. If I unhook the GW the speaker will come back in. I cut off the tip of the GW and pulled back the covering to expose new wire and this did nothing. If I put my reciver on MONO both speakers work, but stereo, only one works. I have also tried putting the ground wire some place different on my reciver and nothing changed. I don't know what to do now? Any ideas?
