How do you decide what goes on a 7-inch and what to save for a full length album? Do you put much thought behind it?

?I didn?t used to, but now I kind of have to. I?m doing this project with Matador Records, it starts in like a couple months, where about every two months for the next year I?ll put out a single on Matador. I was thinking, ?Wow, I?m going to write a lot of songs, but what am I going to do for the next album if that?s the case???

Somehow, I ended up with two new copies of this. It's a massive 527 page hardcover tome regarding the  uber-underground world of Seventies-Eighties US exploitation. Beautiful and well-written, I burned through a third of it immediately after opening it. DEADLY SPAWN!

To quote the publisher:
"....is a massive overview of the Horror genre?s development through the 1970s and 1980s, featuring: In-depth EXCLUSIVE interviews with twenty-five cult filmmakers, many of whom are discussing their work for the first time ever in print, including David Durston (I Drink Your Blood), Robert Endelson (Fight for Your Life), Frederick Friedel (Axe), Don Jones (Schoolgirls in Chains); and Joseph Ellison (Don't Go in the House). Over 175 individual films reviewed, with full cast and crew credits compiled by world-renowned cinema archivist Julian Grainger. Vast quantities of previously unpublished stills, posters, press-books, plus behind-the-scenes photographs from the filmmakers' own collections."

It retails for $80. Fab Press books are top-notch quality, both in the writing and layout. They also tend to go OOP quickly and fetch some $$ on eBay.

Here's the publisher's info:
http://fabpress.com/vsearch.php?CO=FAB070

Amazon listing (but they don't actually have any, except through other sellers):
http://www.amazon.com/Nightmare-USA-Untold-Exploitation-Independents/dp/1903254469/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-0308004-2444612?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191284068&sr=8-1

I'll send it to anyone in the US for $50 PPD (and this thing weighs about 8lbs). Or interesting trades.

Upcoming Shows/Tours/Events / CRIME TIME
« on: September 07, 2007, 11:14:43 AM »
CRIME Sept. 21, 7pm, Amoeba, SF

amoeba.com/live-shows/performances/san-francisco/2007-september-21/crime/artist.html

Formed in 1976 by Johnny Strike, Frankie Fix, Ron "The Ripper" Greco (ex-Chosen Few/Flamin' Groovies) and Ricky James, Crime took the U.S. early punk scene by storm with their single ?Hot Wire My Heart / Baby You're So Repulsive.? Mingling their rebellious and sexually-charged image (they were most often seen flaunting their vampiric, just-outta-rehab good looks in tight leather, regulation police uniforms, or old-time gangster duds) with their unique blend of intellectual and furious lo-fi rock and roll, Crime ripped post-hippie San Francisco a metaphorical new one. Crime found local refuge at the now legendary Mabuhay Gardens, but became nationally notorious after playing a gig at San Quentin Penitentiary in full police uniforms (of course).

In 1978 Hank Rank joined the ranks, but the band split in 1982 when Strike quit Crime to focus on writing. Frankie Fix attempted a Crime reunion in the early 90?s, but Strike elected not join in. In 1996 Frankie Fix passed away.

Crime experienced a resurgence in recognition in the early 21st Century when both legitimate and unsanctioned bootlegs began to circulate. An official release of bootlegged live shows aptly named ?San Francisco is Still Doomed? was released in 2004 by Swami Records

Well, Strike and Rank are back with a fascinating new line-up for Crime and a new full-length album (vinyl only, folks), "Exalted Masters," which will be released at their upcoming Amoeba in-store on September 21, 2007. Joining Crime are Bay Area garage rock vets Michael Lucas on bass and Brett Stillo on guitar. This Amoeba-exclusive event also includes the unveiling of Johnny Strike?s second book "A Loud Humming Sound Came From Above," published by Rudos and Rubes. Strike and Rank, will be available for signing.

Non-Music Shit / RIP: The Missing Link
« on: August 16, 2007, 12:55:37 PM »

Cancer claims Dewey "Missing Link" Robertson

Cancer has claimed the life of Byron John Robertson -- "Dewey" -- to everyone who knew him. He was 68.

He died at Hamilton's Henderson Hospital at 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning. His last evening was packed with friends and family, who had come to say goodbye to Robertson, who had been hospitalized for more than a week.

Visitors regularly read Robertson many of the heartfelt email messages from fellow wrestlers and fans sent in via SLAM! Wrestling.

Starting out in the 1960s as the protege of Whipper Billy Watson, Robertson carved out a solid career under his given name, and briefly, under a mask as The Crusader, often teaming with Billy Red Lyons.

In the 1980s, Robertson underwent a career resurgence of sorts as the mysterious Missing Link, fooling friends who had known him for years over the startling transformation from a clean-cut babyface wrestler to a Neanderthal-like monster with a tuft of hair and a face painted green.

Over the last number of years, Robertson has been brutally honest about his addictions and his use of steroids. His autobiography, Bang Your Head!, written with author Meredith Renwick, is a harrowing tale of life on the road and battles with the dark side of addictions.

Robertson is survived by his sons Jason and Mark and their families, and companion Karen Antoniak.

Funeral arrangements are not known at this time
