Music Shit / We Got Power book
« on: April 17, 2012, 10:43:47 AM »
wegotpowerbook.com

In 1979, punk was over, but by 1981, hardcore was born.

As teenagers in 1981, David Markey and his best friend Jordan Schwartz founded We Got Power, a fanzine dedicated to the first-generation hardcore punk music community in their native Los Angeles. Their text and cameras captured the early punk spirit of Black Flag, the Minutemen, Social Distortion, Red Cross/Redd Kross, Suicidal Tendencies, the Descendents, White Flag, the Last, the Gun Club, Saccharine Trust, Sin 34, Nip Drivers, Circle One, M.D.C., Big Boys, Youth Brigade, D.R.I., the Butthole Surfers, Firehose, and many others at the height of their precocious punk powers.

In the process, the duo's amazing photographs also captured the dilapidated suburbs, abandoned storefronts, and dereliction of the early Reagan era; a rubble-strewn social apocalypse that demanded a youth uprising! Never before seen except in crude fanzine form, these detailed and richly narrative photos are now collected to present an intimate portrayal of a uniquely fertile creative moment.

Deluxe 304pp large-format hardcover featuring essays by David Markey, Jordan Schwartz, Jennifer Schwartz, Henry Rollins, Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski, Dez Cadena and...
Presenting nearly 400 first-generation L.A. hardcore punk photographs
Including complete color reprints of We Got Power fanzine 1981-1983 and beyond.
Dimensions: 12″ x 9″ (30.5 cm x 23 cm); 4 lbs. (2.5kg)

Music Shit / 2011: THE YEAR PUNK BROKE (UP)

http://www.spin.com/articles/kim-gordon-and-thurston-moore-announce-split

If the demise of R.E.M. didn't put the final nail in the '90s indie-rock dream, this news sure will: Sonic Youth super-couple Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore have split up after 27 years of marriage ? and the future of the band they've played in together since 1981 is unclear.

The pair confirmed the news in a statement from their Matador Records rep that reads, "Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment."

The band currently has five dates scheduled on their fall tour, starting with a November 5 show in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and wrapping with a November 14 gig in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Their most recent studio album ? their 16th (!) under the SY name ? was 2009's The Eternal, which earned an 8/10 SPIN review. The pair have a 17-year-old daughter, Coco, who fronts a band of her own called Big Nils.

Received a dispatch from Montana regarding the death of the punk rock bankrobber:

Killed by a drunk driver. Always enjoyed his Flipside columns from prison, even if he was on the sketchy side at times. Another RIP.

Music Shit / Imants Krumins RIP
« on: June 09, 2011, 11:46:49 AM »
The following is from our very own Maltodextrin, from the other board (that Imants posted on), and I figured I'd post it here:

Imants Krumins has passed on after a lengthy battle with cancer. He'd spent the last while in palliative care, surrounded by friends and people who cared about him. Out of respect for Imants' wishes, this had been kept discrete-- he didn't want a lot of fuss and drama, and I have it on good authority that he wanted to talk chiefly about music and records until the end.

I literally know of not one person with the amount of knowledge, passion and ongoing enthusiasm for punk rock, show-going and record collecting as Imants, and the stories are endless and true. He drove the Ramones on their first dates outside NY/Boston in 1976, he traveled to the UK to catch the 1977 punk explosion as it happened. He had incredible stories-- seeing the Ramones over a hundred times, the record release show for the first SLF record, Bad Brains circa ROIR, Discharge and Rudimentary Peni in the UK super early-- yet rather than get jaded or mellowing out, he was only ever seeking out harsher and more underground sounds, and his frequent buying trips to Europe and especially Japan are well known. No matter what was happening, Imants was there early and his tastes were spot-on-- I was impressed when I picked up the Touch & Go book last year to find a letter from Imants looking to trade live tapes of the the then-new hardcore bands circa '81, but then shortly after found letters from him in Bomp mag ten years earlier than that, taking Greg Shaw to task from some erroneous info regarding the Kinks. A true lifer.

More importantly, Imants was a truly friendly, generous and genuine man, inspiring to those around him and always up for a pint and a chat. He's left behind countless good memories and he will be missed a great deal.

I only met Imants in the past ten years or so, but it was always a pleasure to see him at a show in Toronto or in Buffalo. The absolute nicest guy ever, and someone who knew more about (and appreciated) music more than I ever will be able to. I know a few others on here knew him and might not look at HRPS that often anymore....

Music Shit / The Beale (Country Teasers content)
« on: May 24, 2011, 06:50:29 PM »
Anyone ever heard any of their recordings? A couple 7"es on Guided Missile plus some comp stuff apparently. Just noticed them on eBay, supposedly Wallers and Leighton Crook were in the early line-up (but not on all of the records). Just curious. Let me guess...sounds like The Fall?
