Non-Music Shit / Re: Comical or Questionable MERCH Thread

Going back to the main topic though, the only questionable merch I ever saw was back in the 80s when you'd go see AC/DC or Judas Priest or whoever at the local sports arena, and they'd be selling shirts that were obviously legit, but then you'd also see these fucking ghetto-ass black market shirts for sale too that probably lasted maybe 3-4 washings.  You older heads know what I'm talking about!

Ahhh hahahaha.

I remember king Louie and his really lousy blues band playing milwaukee about 4 years ago, and he had loads of freshly printed exploding hearts t-shirts.

This guy was WAY overrated. He cranked out a lot of decent stuff and some stinkers. Did he do anything good?

All the King Louie bands I've seen live were consistently great.  I'm sure he's had his ups and downs over the years, but I bet his hit/miss ratio is favorable when compared to others who have been doing it as long as he has.

Non-Music Shit / Re: CD player question
« on: July 21, 2016, 08:23:45 PM »
For CDs, I just bought crummy little DVD player from the thrift shop for ten bucks. I only have the audio cables hooked up to it, no video. So far, it's played every CD/CDR I've thrown at it.

Something like one of these:

Was gonna say the same thing.  If you don't mind something a little larger, there are plenty of single disc players available at thrift stores that have the big stereo component width, but are only like an inch or two high.

It's a good, well-written summation of Black Flag for people who might somehow still be ignorant of 80s youth culture.

Been lurking on Termbo forums for a while. Here goes.

DAMN!

Yeah, that's pretty amazing.

Music Shit / Re: Bad Review

What's funny is when you get a review that puts you in a subgenre you don't think you belong in, or compares you to bands that you feel you have nothing in common with.

Enough theorizing, lets see the bad reviews.

They weren't ever really BAD reviews, it was just things where the reviewer perceived us differently than we thought they would - adjectives like "biker rock", "Southern", and "swampy" were thrown around.

Harsh, but makes me want to give it a listen.  Any decent record review (whether positive or negative) should help you determine whether or not you personally would like the record, and this one does do that.

Let's face it; general rules that make sense to most people when it comes to music do's and don'ts can occasionally be broken by virtue of energy, song quality, enthusiasm, etc.

EXACTLY!!!

Giuda show last night in Portland was unreal...I feel bad for those of you who can't appreciate what they do.  I dug Taxi too, despite being exposed to all the KBD hits long before I'd ever heard them.  Everything's derivative, whether the band cops to it or not is immaterial.

Stoked about the Portland show too!  These motherfuckers came all the way from Italy to rocknroll for us, I'll be damned if I'm gonna miss it!

I agree with most of what's been said, and totally get it - you're saying a band like the Stray Cats is not at the same level as bands such as the Ramones or the Cramps because they're more of a superficial copy of an outmoded style than a spiritual one.  Despite that, I dig the Stray Cats, Giuda, and lots of other backwards-looking bands that do what they do well and have fun with it.

It'd be interesting to see where people think other bands fall in this spectrum...were the Exploding Hearts superficially retro?  If so, does it make their music any less valid?

Then to make shit even more complicated there are bands that start out as retro xerox bands and evolve into something more.

The Hunches kinda started as a somewhat derivative.  You could pick out their influences a bit too easily on the first album....ok this is the Suicide song, this is the Cramps song, this is the slower VU type song.......over time they hit their stride and found their own voice with the next two albums....

Almost used them as an example of that.  I was also gonna say that I can hear the influence of the past ten years on the Lavender Flu record, but I hear just as much late 60s psych in it too.

There's a difference between taking influences and making them your own and just doing genre exercises which is boring.

I get that, but there is something to be said for bands that can take a 'retired' genre and make it exciting again, or put a new twist on it.
