Non-Music Shit / Re: Lake Effect Snow

Toronto's weird in that it sits right on Lake Ontario, yet doesn't get that lake effect snow. The Toronto suburbs get far more snow than the downtown area, which is right on the lake.

the oblivians are my favorite of all the 90's bands. only saw the halloween '03 show but it's one of the best i've seen.

Same here. I don't listen to the Oblivians that much these days but their albums still give me a kick. And that Halloween reunion show is one of the best I ever saw.

I don't know how anyone doesn't like Mark's voice. In a genre fully of mediocre singers, he stands above everyone. And he writes amazing songs too.

12 pages of 90s garage-punk band talk and no mention of The Drags? I would take them over pretty much every Rip Off band.

I've listened to this a few times so far, at both 33 and 45 RPM. It's amazing, but different, at both speeds.

If anyone doubts the Cheater Slicks they have to listen to the cover of Sister Ray on their myspace. It's arguably better than the original.

Cheater Slicks have been the steadiest band on my turntable for the past five or so years since I first really got into them. I think the first CD of Forgive Thee is one of the best things any band has ever done. When I go for a walk on a shitty day I love throwing that on and really cranking the volume on my MP3 player. By the time you get around to "Ghost" your senses are completely assaulted in so many ways. "Ghost" is especially amazing, and Dave Shannon's guitar playing on it is mind blowing.

I've seen them live five times, in four different cities, but never in Toronto. I could watch them play for hours and not get bored.

I went to the Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge tour in 1994. They played Olympic Stadium and I was sitting so high up I could barely see anything, even with binoculars.

I also went to Lollapalooza that year, with the Boredoms, George Clinton, Nick Cave, Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, and more. Back then I didn't really know any of those bands except the last two.

Haha, our postss are the same, minus some Lollapalooza lineup changes.

Blind Melon opened for the Stones when I saw them and the singer just kept whining onstage how everyone was actually just there to see the Stones.

The Spin Doctors opened at Olympic Stadium. It was really sad. They were trying to get the crowd into it but it was clear no one gave a crap, even when they played "Two Princes".

Worst show I saw was unarguably King Khan and BBQ in Toronto. Khan and BBQ were good, the crowd baffled me though. I guess I never really saw Khan and BBQ as violent, mosh friendly music. That show would have been alot more fun had people danced in tempo to the music, rather than pushed one another the whole time. I hate to say it, as I had alot of fun in the city and at all the shows we played, but the general vibe of the crowd at this show disgusted me. I come from a place where we don't have any drunk shirtless punk dudes pushing girls around at shows.

That sounds par for the course for a show like that these days. I didn't go to this show, but there are a lot more jocks showing up at "big" garage shows in Toronto who just push people around and don't actually dance. It's great that lots of people come out, but it's not as much fun. Though the last time they played here, last Christmas at Sneaky Dees, was one the most fun shows I've been to and had a great vibe. The only thing that's changed in the last year is King Khan signing to Vice.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Stephen Harper shuts down parliament

This week was the most interesting week of Canadian politics in my life, I'd say.

Definitely the most exciting week of Canadian politics since the Quebec referendum in 1995.

Hopefully Dion and Harper will both be gone by the time Parliament comes back. I just can't see Harper ever surviving a confidence vote with the way he acted over the past 10 days. The only thing that will save his ass is a mass defection of Liberals should Dion not step down before Christmas.
