New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / New on Plastic Idol: ACTUAL WATER

ACTUAL WATER "She's a Priest" b/w "Latoya" 7" (PIR-042)
A few years ago, Ben Cook hipped me to some of the cool sounds lurking in Toronto's east end.  One of the names he tossed around was ACTUAL WATER, then just a couple of guys making noise, searching for a sound.  Fast forward to fall 2011 and Ben made a pitch for an Actual Water single, which he co-wrote and recorded.  "It might be worth your time," he warned.  Well, he was right.  "She's a Priest," an homage to the glory of a local burger joint, is crisp, sparkly pop that hits the spot.  The flipside, previously released on a lathe cut flexi-disc from Scotch Tapes, is in a similar vein:  jangly, harmonic, and well worth repeating.  Limited to 330 copies.

YOUNG GOVERNOR "Firing Squad" b/w "25 With a Bullet" 7" (PIR-039)
$6.25 ppd. within the USA

In a few short years, Ben Cook has carved out a sweet little niche for himself under the moniker "YOUNG GOVERNOR."  The Guv's stamp is pretty much everywhere you look these days:  he writes, he records, he slings wax as a budding record label mogul, and he still finds time to rock the guitar in FUCKED UP.  Last year, he even landed a part in some teen idol flick, playing drums opposite Nick Jonas, and lived to write a song about it for his agent.  Word is, the Guv is taking it to the stage in 2011 with a full band.  No ETA yet, but we'll all be paying attention for sure.  This single marks our fourth dance with Ben and it's a real corker.  "Firing Squad" was on its way to a super-indie when we rescued it, while "25 With a Bullet" appears here in its third--and best, we think--form.  Limited to 600 copies, black vinyl.

MARVELOUS DARLINGS "I'll Stand By Her" b/w "Friend of a Friend" 7" (PIR-040)
$6.00 ppd. within the USA

The latest addition to MARVELOUS DARLINGS' discography is a legitimate double A-side threat.  Like their last three singles on Bachelor, P. Trash, and Taken By Surprise, "I'll Stand By Her" and "Friend of a Friend" were destined for a full-length release that never materialized.  So, a killer LP became a collection of killer singles, parceled out to different labels, issued one at a time (maybe they'll be reunited someday).  Much has been written about these guys' sound and the other bands in which they have/had a stake and it's pretty much all on point--we won't pad the score here.  Once again, the Westerbergian vibes permeate through these grooves, a union of snarling rock 'n' roll and strummy goodness.  Limited to 600 copies, black vinyl.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / vinyl vinyl vinyl
« on: February 02, 2010, 09:18:54 PM »
The web site will be updated sometime this weekend with ordering information for three new releases.  Meanwhile, you can stream songs from each record, and get a sneak-peek at another MARVELOUS DARLINGS single, on Plastic Idol's MySpace page, www.myspace.com/plasticidolrecords.

Some blurbage:

MARVELOUS DARLINGS "Teenage Targets" b/w "Lagoons" 7" (PIR-041)
The third time's a charm for "Teenage Targets" b/w "Lagoons," a record promised to three different labels in three years' time.  The backstory is hardly tabloid fare--the usual coulda-shoulda-woulda bullshit is to blame--and really, who cares?  Chew on this instead:  Marvelous Darlings are one of the best bands you'll hear on a 45 these days, even though they're more of a "collabo writing team" than a "band," says frontman Ben Cook (FUCKED UP, YOUNG GOVERNOR, the BITTERS) when describing their formula for success.  The songs/releases seem to be flowing more in recent months and that's a great thing, because supply-and-demand has turned these guys' records into obsessions.  These two songs, recorded in 2007, are a primo blend of punk and power-pop permutations; supremely catchy, gloriously played, and instantly classic.  We couldn?t be happier to bring them to you on vinyl in 2010, better late than never.  Pressed on blue vinyl, limited to 600 copies.

SUPERIOR UNITS "Take Her in the Classroom" 7" EP (PIR-038)
East Bay teens from BUZZER and the IMPEDIMENTS join forces in Superior Units to make the kind of music you wish you knew existed at their bright-eyed age.  I suppose it's not a shocker these kids are so well-informed given their stake in one of the world's best rock 'n' roll scenes, but you might be surprised to learn that a couple of them have been doing it this way for years, dating back to the PHIL SPECTOR SHOTGUN EXPERIENCE at age 14.  The first time I heard Superior Units, they were paying tribute to their superior units.  The tune was "2 Much 4 Skin," a '70s proto-punk inspired gem that had me waxing nostalgic about the first time I heard the GIZMOS.  A similar vibe hangs over this record from start to finish and it's totally boss.  The EP's title track, a detention hall soundtrack aimed at the hot-for-teacher set, and "2 Many Dipshitz," a bouncy, bratty sing-along, are ridiculous in the most complimentary way.  The future has never looked better.  Well done, lads!  Limited to 300 copies, black vinyl.

THE MINDS "Knifed" 7" EP (PIR-008)
Three blasts from the past by this Pacific Northwest powerhouse, anchored by members of the FLIP-TOPS, NIX, and DEFECT DEFECT, among others.  These guys and gal left behind an LP and a couple EPs worth of excellent garage-punk tuneage, but it was in the live arena where they truly excelled.  Their travels took them to Europe and up and down the West Coast a couple times before things fizzled.  Like their "We Got The Pop" EP (PIR-008), these songs were documented in the band's basement practice space, resulting in a scrappier recording than their LP.  Take the first few bars of "Knifed," for example--perhaps the toughest the Minds ever sounded on record, even if some of the power is lost in lo-fi translation.  "Twist It Off" is the more bile-infused of the B-side bunch, while "Never Wanted It," an unclaimed tune from a rumored split with the ENDS, brings down the curtain in a blaze of synth.  And that's all she wrote.  Limited to 300 copies on black vinyl, sleeve by Jonas Norway.

The web site will be updated this week.  In the interim, here's some blurbage for you:

THE MANIKINS "The Start For Me" b/w "Let Me Go" 7-inch (PIR-026)
Still reeling from their first United States tour in April/May 2009, these Swedes dish two exclusive hits on this platter, their second for Plastic Idol.  Both tunes were recorded during the sessions that produced "Crocodiles," the Manikins' latest and greatest long-player, and like the songs that comprised the album, everything clicks.  It's tough to dismiss the appeal of "The Start For Me" and "Let Me Go":  tight hooks, equal parts power and pop, with a bright, prickly edge; both are certifiably hummable.  When it came time to mix down, the Manikins set off these tunes from the LP by employing a vintage Telefunken tape recorder, giving these two great pop songs a bit more pop.  Weasel Walter mastered this single so it sounds like it means business.  The band's longtime art guru, Jonas Norway, dressed up the sleeve nicely as usual.  Pressed on Baltic Sea-colored vinyl, limited to 500 copies.

CRASH NORMAL "Flying to NY" b/w "Hairy Wine 2" 7-inch (PIR-037)
Paris, France's Crash Normal is prepared to own 2009 with a flurry of releases, led by this dandy of a single.  The showstopping duo of Jerome and Vincent continue to do what they do best:  smash the rock 'n' roll "box" and glue its pieces back together however they see fit.  The result is a dynamic discography, ranging from blown-out garage-isms to electro-infused bleeps, yet it all sounds like it fits into a bigger picture.  On this single, Crash Normal sounds leaner, and perhaps meaner, than they have in a while.  "Flying to NY" was originally earmarked for another release, but we loved it so much that we had to stake our claim to it as the A-side (we think you'll approve).  "Hairy Wine 2" is Ben Wallers worship in the form of an impeccably rendered COUNTRY TEASERS tune.  Kerozen supplied the sleeve art.  Mastered by Weasel Walter.  Pressed in a limited edition of 650 copies.

YOUNG GOVERNOR "Virginia Creeper" b/w "I'm a Mess" 7" (PIR-034)
YOUNG GOVERNOR is Ben Cook (formerly of NO WARNING and VIOLENT MINDS), one-third of FUCKED UP's guitar ensemble, and this is his debut solo record.  The epitome of a workhorse, Ben has his hands full writing and recording for at least a half-dozen projects these days, including MARVELOUS DARLINGS, a crew of criminally underrated power-poppers, and the BITTERS, a band whose name you'll recognize the next time you hear it bandied about, guaranteed.  "Virginia Creeper" and "I'm a Mess" were laid down by the Governor at East End Reclusives, in Toronto, Canada, a dumpy practice space responsible for an impressive amount of recorded work in recent years.  Although more pop-infused than the hardcore stylings of Ben's present/past, Young Governor solo is arguably as raw and unpredictable as anything he's done, if not more so.  The needle-pegged, hyperactive pop of "Virginia Creeper" and "I'm a Mess" offer a glimpse of the Governor's 2009 agenda, and frankly, teasers don't get any better than this.  Pressed on beautiful lavender vinyl with a full-color sleeve (layout by Matt Wong), limited to 750 copies.

THE INTELLIGENCE "Fido, Your Leash Is Too Long" b/w "Shitty World" 7" (PIR-033)
$5.50 ppd. within the USA

INTELLIGENCE front man Lars Finberg is a crafty son of a bitch.  When he's not busy perfecting his brand of infectious avant-pop, he's putting his stamp on old favorites he didn't write and breathing into them new life.  With this single, Lars brings together songs by the MAGNETIC FIELDS and the SPITS.  The A-side, which finds Lars ditching the original's chirpy disposition in favor of a blown-out haze, is the biggest surprise of the two.  "Shitty World," however, lives up to its status as a retardo-rock anthem--thank goodness.  Somewhere, the Wood brothers are smiling.  Mastered by Weasel Walter.  Onetime pressing of 650 copies.

MATT K. SHRUGG "Phono" b/w "Around In a Circle" 7" (PIR-029)
Two records into the Matt K. Shrugg solo experience and things are starting to get a little weird.  "Phono" and "Around In a Circle" are the latest tunes to emerge from MKS' song vault; both represent the most far-reaching ideas we've heard from him thus far.  The trademark ass-kicking we've come to expect from Matt--currently he anchors the PIZZAS and the LOSIN' STREAKS; he's also a veteran of the ZODIAC KILLERS, BLACK DAHLIAS, and a shit-ton more--is all over this record.  Like his debut solo EP released by Tic Tac Totally earlier this year, Matt wrote, played, recorded, and designed this record from top to bottom--dude's got skills.  What sets this record apart is its depth, an indicator that Matt draws inspiration from more than just the same 'ol same 'ol.  That it retains the essence of his best work is a testament to his status as a great artist:  Matt puts his stamp on everything he touches.  The proof is in the grooves.  Mastered by Weasel Walter.  Pressed on white vinyl, limited to 400 copies.

MATT K. SHRUGG "I'm Gone" b/w "We're So S.O.L." 7" (PIR-030)
Two-thousand eight has been good to Matt K. Shrugg.  A fixture of the Sacramento music scene since his mid-teens, Matt was recently inducted into the Sacramento Area Music Awards' "hall of fame," an honor bestowed upon him for being a perennial favorite among peers and pundits alike.  He's also given us a couple new records to chew on by way of the PIZZAS and his first solo offering under the "Matt K. Shrugg" moniker.  "I'm Gone" b/w "We're So S.O.L" is his second single on Plastic Idol and his third solo record overall.  More fiercely delivered than anything we've heard from him in 2008, these two tunes find Matt dialed-in to killer-chorus mode.  The likes of "I-M G-O-N-E, baby!" and "We're So S-O-L" ain't exactly rocket science, but at least you can slur 'em out when you're wasted.  Raw, ragin', and right on time:  that's the MO here and it works like a charm.  This record is all-Matt.  Weasel Walter mastered it.  Pressed on clear vinyl, limited to 400 copies.

STATUES "Broken Hands" 7" (PIR-027)
Three cuts of primo power-pop from Canada's STATUES grace this 7" EP, one-half of the "Crooked Fingers, Broken Hands" set.  The "Broken Hands" EP follows a string of raved-about releases on Deranged, Radio 81, and Pelado, all of which prove these guys have the right hooks in the right places.  Look no further to find a better example than "Husbands and Wives," the A-side on this platter, which fuses punk and pop in anthemic fashion, sort of like the JAM's punkier moments.  Things get even more interesting on the flipside with "Soft Lives," a tune that emerged while working out a HOMOSEXUALS cover.  Add a swell take on the POINTED STICKS' "You Must Be Crazy," and you've got yourself a fat slice of bounce-pop heaven.  Limited to 500 copies on "Coke bottle clear" vinyl; artwork by Matt Maranger.

ANTEENAGERS M.C. "(Illusions of the) Teens" 7" (PIR-021)
Plastic Idol once again joins forces with ANTEENAGERS M.C.--see 2005's "Let's Not Have a Party" 7" EP (PIR-006)--for another head-spinning round of French rock 'n' roll, served with a twist (and parentheses in song titles).   You may know and love these guys from their roles in FRUSTRATION, OPERATION S, the NO-TALENTS, and others, and although you can hear echoes of the aforementioned bands on this record, one of Anteenagers M.C.'s greatest strengths is that they always sound like themselves, regardless of their diverse influence pool.  Four blasts from the French rock 'n' roll underground are showcased on this EP, each a unique spin on "punk rock."  The band's choice of covers remains impeccable; this time the KICK's "Let's Get Back Together" gets the nod.  Limited to 500 copies on clear vinyl; sleeve by Nicus Duteil.

THE FLIP-TOPS "Dangerous Game" 7" (PIR-012)
News flash:  Portland's the FLIP-TOPS are back.  If last year's split 7" with the Yokohama Hooks set the tone for their return, "Dangerous Game" ups the ante big-time.  Infused with new blood and a profusion of new tunes, the Flip-Tops have streamlined the sound first heard on their "All Worked Up" LP, released on Rip Off Records in 2002.  Now, the inimitable vox of Joel Jett (the MINDS, JETPACK) and guitar roar of longtime co-conspirator Rob Felkel (the MINDS, NIX) is augmented with sparkling guitar leads, a beefier rhythm section, and a more explosive sound in general.  Limited to 500 copies on beautiful opaque blue vinyl, with another superb sleeve design from Jonas Norway.

POPPETS "Get Back" 7" (PIR-031)
Sweden's the HEARTATTACKS called it quits earlier this year following the release of their second EP on Plastic Idol, entitled "Stay/Go."  Magnus "Slick Black" Andersson didn't waste any time finding a new outlet for his songwriting prowess--and he didn't have to look very far.  POPPETS is Magnus, his girlfriend Lina, and a drum machine.  Stripped-down punky pop is the order of the day; the tastemakers at Victim of Time called it "hot blasting party songs."  Four more gems on this EP, which is sure to go down as a soundtrack for good times.  Limited to 300 copies on black vinyl, sleeve by Magnus.

THE INTELLIGENCE "Debt & ESP" b/w "Chateau Bandit" 7" (PIR-032)
Two more mind-bending tunes from the desk of Lars Finberg, Seattle songcharmer and "the brains" behind the INTELLIGENCE.  The former A-FRAMES and DIPERS member has been a busy boy since the Intelligence morphed into his full-time gig a couple years back.  Whether fleshing out his sound with a full band or flying solo, like he does on this record, there is no question the man's work is ace.  Recordings from 2007 are unearthed on this single, pairing a groover ("Debt & ESP") with a shaker ("Chateau Bandit").  Both tunes were blown up nicely by Weasel Walter (XBXRX, FLYING LUTTENBACHERS, etc.).  Limited to 600 copies on black vinyl.

DAN MELCHIOR UND DAS MENACE "Madame Nhu" b/w "So Real" 7" (PIR-028)
$5.00 ppd. within the USA

Dan Melchior's clever songsmithery is once again showcased on this 45, the latest in a flurry of vinyl releases issued under the "Dan Melchior und Das Menace" moniker.  That Dan knows his way around a song is hardly a secret; his mile-long discography, which includes releases on In The Red and Sympathy For The Record Industry and collaborations with HOLLY GOLIGHTLY and BILLY CHILDISH, speaks for itself.  More recently, Dan's trademark howl and witty musings have taken a turn for the off-kilter--perhaps a result of the "Messthetics" discs in heavy rotation at Melchior Manor--but this 45 finds him toning down slightly the weirdo vibe and giving us a couple unabashed hits, proving a great song is a great song no matter how you cook it.  Pressed on red vinyl, limited to 500 copies.

THE HEARTATTACKS "Stay/Go" 7" EP (PIR-019)
$5.00 ppd. within the USA

Last year, we blew through 500 copies of the Heartattacks' "Your Lies" EP (PIR-014) in a week's time.  So we asked for more.  Even Francis Kidd, front man of the FEATURES, whose "Floozie of the Neighborhood" the Heartattacks covered on "Your Lies," voiced his approval.  Magnus (BLACKS), Tomo (TOKYO KNIVES), and Zeta (DONTCARES) reprise their roles here, cranking out three loud, fast, ruling originals, just like folks used to make 'em at the apex of the '90s garage-punk boom.  On the EP's title track, Magnus seemingly channels Mick Jones in double time; both tunes on the flipside are cut from the same spastic mold.  Junk E. Male (HENRY FIAT'S OPEN SORE) once again twiddled the knobs and made everything sound awesome.  Pressed on white vinyl, limited to 500 copies.

THE REMENBERS "It's" 7" EP (PIR-023)
$4 ppd. within the USA / $7 ppd. worldwide

Plastic Idol once again looks abroad for a rock 'n' roll fix and hits paydirt in the form of a three-song 7" EP from the REMENBERS entitled "It's."

The Remenbers (no, it's not a typo) are a trio from Marseille, France, which borders the Mediterranean Sea in the country's southern region.  Though a relatively new addition to the exciting French rock 'n' roll underground, the Remenbers have quickly made a name for themselves, one empty beer can and blown amp at a time.  When not abusing his kit in the Remenbers, drummer Alex also does time in LES HULKS and JACK OF HEART, both similarly spirited outfits.

On their debut release, the Remenbers deliver three primitive garage punkers in jarring, needle-pegged fashion.  The title track is a devastatingly powerful introduction, strung together by a thundering rhythm section, shards of guitar squall, and scornful vocals; the result is not unlike an amalgam of BILLY CHILDISH and BRAINBOMBS.  The B-side goes straight for the jugular with "Remember," a bouncy, swaggering romp, and "Roadrunner," an overdriven gem.  Vive la France!

The Remenbers' "It's" 7" EP was pressed in a limited edition of 500 copies on red vinyl.  Mathieu, the band's guitar playin' screamer, dressed-up the sleeve.

THE FEVERS "Get On Again" b/w "Can't Be True" 7" (PIR-018)
$4 ppd. within the USA / $7 ppd. worldwide

Plastic Idol proudly presents a new 45 RPM seven-inch vinyl single from everybody's favorite hit-makers, the FEVERS!

That the Fevers have written their share of memorable pop songs in their nearly decade-long run is indisputable.  Since their inception in Northern California's South Bay Area in 1998, the Fevers have released two full-lengths, two 45s, and appeared on a compilation of California's best garage bands alongside the likes of the BOBBYTEENS, the FLAKES, and the PINKZ.  Most recently, the Fevers were featured on the Get Hip label with a two-song 45, released in 2005.

With some 2000 miles now separating the band members, Gavin May (bass, vocals), Brian Hermosillo (guitar, vocals), and Travis Ramin (drums, vocals) remarkably continue to flourish and amaze as they periodically reconvene to rehearse, record, and perform.  In 2005 the band assembled in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and cut the two tracks presented here:  "Get On Again" and "Can't Be True."

"Get On Again" is a classic Fevers-sounding tune—a toe-tapping ballad, graced with beautiful harmonies, fuzzy guitars, and a sprinkling of quirky keys.  The B-side, "Can't Be True," is brighter and more raw as it was captured "campfire style"—recorded live in a circle around a single microphone—and it finds the Fevers paying tribute to the bubblegum classics of the '60s and '70s as only they can.

"Get On Again" b/w "Can't Be True" was pressed in a limited edition of 500 copies on pink vinyl.  Gavin designed the sleeve, drawing inspiration from a record-shopping trip to a Dutch record store.

The Fevers will make a special appearance at the upcoming "Radio Heartbeat Powerpop Festival," in Brooklyn, New York, from March 29-April 1, 2007, where they'll share the stage with NIKKI CORVETTE, 20/20, the NEIGHBORHOODS, MILK 'N' COOKIES, and more.  More information may be found at www.myspace.com/radioheartbeatnow.
