This week, the Plastic Idol web site will be updated with new records by the FLIP-TOPS, POPPETS, and the INTELLIGENCE.  In the interim, please see below and visit the MySpace page to sample new songs from these records and upcoming releases by STATUES and ANTEENAGERS M.C.

THE FLIP-TOPS "Dangerous Game" 7" (PIR-012)
News flash:  Portland's the FLIP-TOPS are back.  If last year's split 7" with the Yokohama Hooks set the tone for their return, "Dangerous Game" ups the ante big-time.  Infused with new blood and a profusion of new tunes, the Flip-Tops have streamlined the sound first heard on their "All Worked Up" LP, released on Rip Off Records in 2002.  Now, the inimitable vox of Joel Jett (the MINDS, JETPACK) and guitar roar of longtime co-conspirator Rob Felkel (the MINDS, NIX) is augmented with sparkling guitar leads, a beefier rhythm section, and a more explosive sound in general.  Limited to 500 copies on beautiful opaque blue vinyl, with another superb sleeve design from Jonas Norway.

POPPETS "Get Back" 7" (PIR-031)
Sweden's the HEARTATTACKS called it quits earlier this year following the release of their second EP on Plastic Idol, entitled "Stay/Go."  Magnus "Slick Black" Andersson didn't waste any time finding a new outlet for his songwriting prowess--and he didn't have to look very far.  POPPETS is Magnus, his girlfriend Lina, and a drum machine.  Stripped-down punky pop is the order of the day; the tastemakers at Victim of Time called it "hot blasting party songs."  Four more gems on this EP, which is sure to go down as a soundtrack for good times.  Limited to 300 copies on black vinyl, sleeve by Magnus.

THE INTELLIGENCE "Debt & ESP" b/w "Chateau Bandit" 7" (PIR-032)
Two more mind-bending tunes from the desk of Lars Finberg, Seattle songcharmer and "the brains" behind the INTELLIGENCE.  The former A-FRAMES and DIPERS member has been a busy boy since the Intelligence morphed into his full-time gig a couple years back.  Whether fleshing out his sound with a full band or flying solo, like he does on this record, there is no question the man's work is ace.  Recordings from 2007 are unearthed on this single, pairing a groover ("Debt & ESP") with a shaker ("Chateau Bandit").  Both tunes were blown up nicely by Weasel Walter (XBXRX, FLYING LUTTENBACHERS, etc.).  Limited to 600 copies on black vinyl.

DAN MELCHIOR UND DAS MENACE "Madame Nhu" b/w "So Real" 7" (PIR-028)
$5.00 ppd. within the USA

Dan Melchior's clever songsmithery is once again showcased on this 45, the latest in a flurry of vinyl releases issued under the "Dan Melchior und Das Menace" moniker.  That Dan knows his way around a song is hardly a secret; his mile-long discography, which includes releases on In The Red and Sympathy For The Record Industry and collaborations with HOLLY GOLIGHTLY and BILLY CHILDISH, speaks for itself.  More recently, Dan's trademark howl and witty musings have taken a turn for the off-kilter--perhaps a result of the "Messthetics" discs in heavy rotation at Melchior Manor--but this 45 finds him toning down slightly the weirdo vibe and giving us a couple unabashed hits, proving a great song is a great song no matter how you cook it.  Pressed on red vinyl, limited to 500 copies.

THE HEARTATTACKS "Stay/Go" 7" EP (PIR-019)
$5.00 ppd. within the USA

Last year, we blew through 500 copies of the Heartattacks' "Your Lies" EP (PIR-014) in a week's time.  So we asked for more.  Even Francis Kidd, front man of the FEATURES, whose "Floozie of the Neighborhood" the Heartattacks covered on "Your Lies," voiced his approval.  Magnus (BLACKS), Tomo (TOKYO KNIVES), and Zeta (DONTCARES) reprise their roles here, cranking out three loud, fast, ruling originals, just like folks used to make 'em at the apex of the '90s garage-punk boom.  On the EP's title track, Magnus seemingly channels Mick Jones in double time; both tunes on the flipside are cut from the same spastic mold.  Junk E. Male (HENRY FIAT'S OPEN SORE) once again twiddled the knobs and made everything sound awesome.  Pressed on white vinyl, limited to 500 copies.

hey Mario,
Whats going on with Imaginary Icons?

I just moved.  I'm currently sitting on Imaginary Icons and Retainers records, and I'll be sitting on Hank IV records by Friday.  I've got a lot of stuffing to do (among other things) and I'm trying to get back up to speed as fast as I can.

The only people who have Imaginary Icons records right now are those who picked them up from the band at SXSW.  The band has their copies too, of course.  You'll be taken care of soon, I assure you.

This show is your first, and perhaps only, chance to score the limited version of the new Hank IV single on Plastic Idol, "Dirty Poncho" b/w "Symptomatic."  There are 100 hand-numbered copies on gold/white vinyl with a goldenrod dust cover and Japanese-style resealable sleeve; these will only be available at this show (I'm splitting the colored vinyl with the band, but I haven't decided how I'm gonna distribute the other 50).  Get your asses to Davis this Saturday and/or hit up your northern California pals to take care of you!  This is a great record!

Here's a taste of "Dirty Poncho" to whet your appetite:

I wrote that line.  Maybe it's a stretch...maybe it's not.  Good record, though.

THE REMENBERS "It's" 7" EP (PIR-023)
$4 ppd. within the USA / $7 ppd. worldwide

Plastic Idol once again looks abroad for a rock 'n' roll fix and hits paydirt in the form of a three-song 7" EP from the REMENBERS entitled "It's."

The Remenbers (no, it's not a typo) are a trio from Marseille, France, which borders the Mediterranean Sea in the country's southern region.  Though a relatively new addition to the exciting French rock 'n' roll underground, the Remenbers have quickly made a name for themselves, one empty beer can and blown amp at a time.  When not abusing his kit in the Remenbers, drummer Alex also does time in LES HULKS and JACK OF HEART, both similarly spirited outfits.

On their debut release, the Remenbers deliver three primitive garage punkers in jarring, needle-pegged fashion.  The title track is a devastatingly powerful introduction, strung together by a thundering rhythm section, shards of guitar squall, and scornful vocals; the result is not unlike an amalgam of BILLY CHILDISH and BRAINBOMBS.  The B-side goes straight for the jugular with "Remember," a bouncy, swaggering romp, and "Roadrunner," an overdriven gem.  Vive la France!

The Remenbers' "It's" 7" EP was pressed in a limited edition of 500 copies on red vinyl.  Mathieu, the band's guitar playin' screamer, dressed-up the sleeve.

Music Shit / Re: new fevers 45
« on: January 09, 2007, 08:23:25 PM »
I think this record could have used one more tune and a full-band recording of the B-side.

Not to single out Steve, but this is a solid take.  There actually was a third song in the mix, a stellar version of "Roll Over, Beethoven," but I believe another label nicked it for a comp.  I would have released all three songs in a heartbeat, but I couldn't be happier with the two songs on the single.  Also, I understand what you mean about the B-side, but it's worth pointing out that the entire band does play on that tune.  It's just an unelectrified band.

The usual suspects should have these soon, if not already.  Revolver took the biggest chunk, so keep them in mind if you're in a pinch (they may also have some of my other OOP releases).  I'm down to my last 20 copies.

This just in:  There will be a new RETAINERS single on Plastic Idol as soon as we can get everything together!

THE FEVERS "Get On Again" b/w "Can't Be True" 7" (PIR-018)
$4 ppd. within the USA / $7 ppd. worldwide

Plastic Idol proudly presents a new 45 RPM seven-inch vinyl single from everybody's favorite hit-makers, the FEVERS!

That the Fevers have written their share of memorable pop songs in their nearly decade-long run is indisputable.  Since their inception in Northern California's South Bay Area in 1998, the Fevers have released two full-lengths, two 45s, and appeared on a compilation of California's best garage bands alongside the likes of the BOBBYTEENS, the FLAKES, and the PINKZ.  Most recently, the Fevers were featured on the Get Hip label with a two-song 45, released in 2005.

With some 2000 miles now separating the band members, Gavin May (bass, vocals), Brian Hermosillo (guitar, vocals), and Travis Ramin (drums, vocals) remarkably continue to flourish and amaze as they periodically reconvene to rehearse, record, and perform.  In 2005 the band assembled in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and cut the two tracks presented here:  "Get On Again" and "Can't Be True."

"Get On Again" is a classic Fevers-sounding tune—a toe-tapping ballad, graced with beautiful harmonies, fuzzy guitars, and a sprinkling of quirky keys.  The B-side, "Can't Be True," is brighter and more raw as it was captured "campfire style"—recorded live in a circle around a single microphone—and it finds the Fevers paying tribute to the bubblegum classics of the '60s and '70s as only they can.

"Get On Again" b/w "Can't Be True" was pressed in a limited edition of 500 copies on pink vinyl.  Gavin designed the sleeve, drawing inspiration from a record-shopping trip to a Dutch record store.

The Fevers will make a special appearance at the upcoming "Radio Heartbeat Powerpop Festival," in Brooklyn, New York, from March 29-April 1, 2007, where they'll share the stage with NIKKI CORVETTE, 20/20, the NEIGHBORHOODS, MILK 'N' COOKIES, and more.  More information may be found at www.myspace.com/radioheartbeatnow.

Is anybody ever going to have the 7" on Holy Cobra Society?

I should have some for sale soon-ish.  "Soon-ish" as in I traded with the guy over a month ago and they'll probably be here any day now.
