Pop Punk / Re: Weird 90s Pop-Punk Resurgence?
« on: May 03, 2007, 05:40:04 AM »
im not sayin anything for or against it, but for some reason a lotta the kids in ny that used to be totally anarcho crusty are heavy into pop punk now. i think modern machines were pretty huge in that scene for a while. ive some some crust pop punk bands too. that kinda makes it a little more interesting i guess. that and folk punk. its a pretty huge bummer when you go to a show lookin to have a good time and all you got is like 8 girls with dreadlocks and bikes and overalls all screaming in unison about marxism or unity or some other bullshit.

my friend tko happened to capture some of this magical night on film.

heres exhibit a, drunk irish guy rockin out glory days style (notice guitar strap placement):

now heres seamus mcwasted 15 minutes later, attempting to hit pat with liam's guitar:

somewhere between the takin of these two pictures somebody yelled out a request for bulls on parade by rage against the machine, which titus played the intro to one time to open their set (i guess they figured after that anything would be good), and some drunkass guido in a giambi jersey (DH, 2003 leader in walks and HBPs, fuckin sick dude!!!) got psyched and started screamin "BULLS ON PARADE! BULLS ON PARADE!" fuckin yanks fans. this was also not the first time somebody tried to use liams guitar as a weapon. one time we played a show and a punx/meatheads fight broke out and this punk kid tried swingin it at the quarterback of the glen rock nj varsity football team (all time record most consecutive state champs baby!). he later got his ass beat by like five dudes. how bout those mets eh?

i was really bummed about this show man. ethan called me when we were on our way there and told me they couldnt get in touch with the test patterns so LFD couldnt make it since they were countin on them for a ride. we got there around 930 and started setting up. there were maybe 10 regulars there, mostly wino types and a couple goombahs. the wasted irish guy who owned the place came out and started makin bad jokes and callin us amateurs. this was strange since the girls who booked the show gave him a vcr cd, which he listened to and then told them that he was excited for the "heavy metal." i figured since were nowhere near as harsh as heavy metal it would go down real great. this guy also had a haircut that looked sorta like a devillock or somethin, an a shirt that said "i only drink on days that start with T: tuesday, thursday, tomorrow, and today." he stole my sunglasses when i walked in and told me to smoke another joint. when titus andronicus was setting up he turned on the demo on their keyboard, which he then brought behind the bar and pretended to rock out on.

titus andronicus started playing and he picked up liam's (from vcr) guitar and put it on. then he proceeded to rock out bruce style back to back with pat from titus and sing into the mic with pat. he looked like a drunk irish stevie van zandt. i figured this shit was gonna go down great since one song in the dude was havin the time of his life. titus started playin their second song and i guess the dude snapped or something. maybe hes schizophrenic or maybe he realized he had just made a total dumbass of himself in front of all his regulars.  by this point the place was fuckin full. i walked by it on st patricks day and there werent half as many people in there then as there were at this point, and the place is a friggin irish pub.  the guy runs on stage while titus is playin and starts wavin his hands in the air and screamin for them to stop. then he says somethin like, he says "come on now, really, play somethin nice, nice and easy!" the he points to pats amp and says "come on! cook it up!" pats guitar is pretty jangly or whatever so i guess this dude didnt dig it.

titus looked pretty confused, so they played their slowest song, AM Gold, which is sort of a 70s country type deal. people liked that and clapped, but after that, they were outta slow songs. they tried playin a regular song, and the guy stopped them again about 3 measures in. pat, the main dude from titus, was lookin rpetty stressed by this point, and was hittin an ass pocket of jamesons like he was about to get whacked or somethin. i was gettin pretty nervous too i think i was poundin pretty fast myself. they tried playin a cover of candy says by the velvets which went over ok, then tried another regular song. this time the guy really flipped, stopped everything, started berating people to buy drinks, which people were doin, but i geuss not fast enough for him. i think his exact words were somethin like "buy some drinks ya jew taliban cocksuckers!!!" the girls who set up the show tried to reason with him, and so did pat from titus, which really pissed the guy off. he said somethin like "you cant play anything nice, just take your shit and get the fuck out!!!" which was funny, since he was blasting van halen when we got there. everybody started packin stuff up and takin it outside. i was kinda envisioning a punx vs winos fight goin down pretty quick, which i really kinda wanted to see. somebody got pissed and threw a glass, and then pat, whos prety fuckin irish himself, started gettin into it with the guy, first about the guy bein an asshole, and then they got into some sort of argument about the guy being a bad irishman, and pat and the guy started screamin about "if parnell was here right now" or some kinda irish steven dedalus type shit, which really pissed the guy off and he started gettin in pats face screamin "OUT! OUT! OUT!" i tried goin inside to help out pat, but some mike ditka with a moustache baseball coach lookin motherfucker was blockin the door. pat came out and was walkin down the street screamin and we all just went up to graces place and got loaded. what it is i guess.

i felt bad when the test patterns showed up and we had no money or place to play for them. if i had been in a better state of mind it wouldve occurred to me to pass around a cup for them so they couldve gotten something. i went around the corner and bought a bunch more beer so maybe they could at least get drunk with us but when i got back they were gone. im sorry guys i owe you one. then i smoked a buncha weed with soem asian guy on the balcony and woke up on the kitchen floor. fuckin a.

The Bee Gees "How Deep Is Your Love?"

Yes, I'm serious.

in the 4th grade my mom got me a casio keyboard for my birthday. every time i turned it on somehow it managed to play this ultra shitty casio version of how deep is your love. that shit is still stuck in my head after all these years, in a really bad way. i wont play it for you, it would definitely ruin the song for you forever.

mamaroneck's  sorta south westchester, just above the bronx. there's more mexicans and meth headed lookin dudes than rich folks from what i've seen. i guess you could call em scumfucs. the show's at:

the duck inn
128 w. boston post road
mamaroneck, ny

show starts around 9. party at grace's down the block before, after, during, the show. it's her roommate stephanie's brithday so theyre gonna have food and lotsa booze at their place too. shows free. i guess if yer 21 please buy drinks since theyre paying the bands. if you drive parkings no big deal. takin the trains pretty easy too but theres no trains from 12:48 am to 5:26 am. kind of a bummer. i think a good amount of people are driving though, so even taking the train there and getting a ride back to the city is feasable. anybody's also welcome to get totally wasted and sleep at grace's. they've got room and blankets and stuff.

heres a buncha directions an shit

the duck inns a cheesy irish pub. its got somethin to do with ducks too theres fake ducks all over the place. this should be a fun time.  vcr's playin even though boner broke his collar bone in a showdown at pathmark.  our good buddies pat and sleazy will probably cover for him. this band titus andronicus who i used to play drums for is also playing. across the street from this place is a bay and theres a park there. a coupla weeks ago some fuckin guys walkin his dog and finds a suitcase washed up on the beach with a womans torso in it.  coupla weeks later some other guy who lives on the same water finds the girls arm floatin in a bag.  so i geuss free beer all night if you nab the head. im fuckin psyched dudes.

totally dude, taht show was sick! taht was the first time i remember hearin a lotta the songs offa let it bloom. i think that was teh only time ive ever seen em do "feelin gay" and it was totally sick. i remember they had a sample that was in perfect time with the music. i think they mighta played "down and out" or "cant let me down" or somethin at that show too which i really didnt expect. shit was totally sick. there was also a dude at that show who kept sayin "lets fuck em up!!" to me and tryin to start a brodown pit. i think i knocked him over after he got too annoying. c.w. wolf still had a beard back then too i think. fuck dude.
