?FOG began in Auckland, NZ in 1984 when Roger Allen of RIOT 111 met Lindsay McKay of THE LAUGHING CRIPPLES one night at the now demolished Aurora Tavern (they would later be known as Roger Fogorelli and Lindsay Fog). Inspired by a shared sense of humor, the two formed an infectious, heavy rhythm section. On guitar was Tim Ord, who informed their noisy, groove-laden sound. Their approach was fundamentally anarchic, anti-success, and as antagonistic as it was playful.

After briefly touring as a three-piece, Sam Swan (formerly of Wellington's LIFE IN THE FRIDGE EXISTS) joined in on vocals. Like Roger, Sam emigrated to Auckland after traversing Wellington's vaguely nihilistic, psychedelic-influenced early punk scene and became central to ?FOG's arty, confrontational character. One night at Auckland's Mainstreet Cabaret, she scared a group of violent skinheads away by "hatching" an egg on stage, using fake blood as a prop. At another show, an onstage experiment with fire-breathing caused her to catch her own face on fire (she eventually made a full recovery). Her vocal style was cutting, with lyrics ranging from absurdist to socio-politically critical.

The beginning of ?FOG coincided with that of ?FOG CITY ENTERPRISES, a fluid collective/conglomerate under which the band operated. A red house called 'The Red House' was the center of their creative and social universe, and became a key place for underground music and art in Auckland. By 1985 Blaise Oarsman and Dave Appleton had joined on guitar, and thanks to a national arts council grant, ?FOG's 7-inch Round Black Thing was released into the universe. Reissued by Bunkerpop in 2018 for your convenience.

Ahoe-Ahoea started and ended in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. They were short-lived and little-known, and their footprint in the history of Dutch DIY might have escaped detection if not for this self-released cassette in 1983.

Relative to that of its surrounding countries, the 80s post punk/"DIY" scene of The Netherlands remains largely unexplored. If the famous Messthetics series had focused on the Dutch instead of the English, surely Ahoe-Ahoea would have found a place on Issue #101.

Determined not to take themselves too seriously, they performed their first show as Na Een Keer Oefenen (After One Rehearsal) before eventually choosing the name Ahoe-Ahoea, a reference to the Tarzan films of the 1930s. The band's playfulness and sense of humor is an important part of their approach, but these elements are carefully balanced with sincerity, great songwriting and brilliant lyrics. While the opening track hinges on the ululating yell of Tarzan, as portrayed by actor Johnny Weissmuller in the film from 1932, it also explores themes of genocide, racism, the destruction of culture and the melding of totalitarianism and ignorance. A lyrics sheet is included. Read it.

The TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES LP is a reissue of Ahoe-Ahoea's outstanding and under-circulated cassette from 1983.

Package includes lyrics sheet, photos, and notes from the band.

Friends,

As (some of) you may know, the legendary, inspiring, forever-innovative, amazing, aggravating, listener-supported, otherworldly and unprecedented force that is WFMU is in its last week of our Annual Fundraising Marathon and we are way behind what we need to raise to keep us going for another year.

At a great expense, but on a minimal budget, we offer freeform, commercial-free radio for FREE, and once a year we get cozy on the mics and ask you to donate what you can to keep this station alive. And hey! We're educated! We know that public goods are one of the great economic market failures due to inevitable free riders BUT STILL... we believe in this crazy model. THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY DONATED. If you're a listener, follow the link below to add a little $$$ to the cause (and credit your pledge to my show if you like):

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/DF  or  https://www.wfmu.org/marathon/pledge.php?pr=DF

I'll be on the air this Friday 9:30AM - 12:20PM asking for your dollars and giving away a buncha prizes. I'll be offering a CD compilation premium this year of cassette material that I put together from The Netherlands in the 1980s, artwork by Arturo Medrano:

Throughout the show I'll be giving away records by PETER JEFFERIES, EXILES FROM CLOWNTOWN, MAURIZIO BIANCHI, EDVARD GRAHAM LEWIS, EASTLINK, MULTICULT, GLAXO BABIES, CRIME and the WARFARING STRANGERS: DARKSCORCH CANTICLES comp. Plus an EVER/NEVER RECORDS GRAND PRIZE PACK at the end of the show.

Thanks to all who donated the records above and to Arturo for the artwork and to all those who have already donated their $$$ <3

Three years after our re-release of the band's debut 7", we're happy to announce Coitus Int.'s reissued debut self-titled LP from 1981. Reacting to the lack of creativity among punk rock bands in Utrecht at the time, Coitus Int. revealed a slower, darker, bass-driven approach to their music on this record. This is an essential companion to their 'Dead Excitement' EP and the beginning of a remarkable but largely overlooked 15-year career of self-released music.

Edition of 500. More info and links to songs here: www.bunkerpop.com

Recorded between 1981 and 1982, the 3rd and final LP by Fullerton, CA's NULL AND VOID had until now remained unreleased. Mutant Sounds said it best:

"Like Half Machine Lip Moves On Some Faraway Beach, this final genius stroke from these increasingly warped Californian post punk merchants (following my posts of their Happiness And Contempt and Montage Morte EPs, the latter of which shares a few tracks with this album) ratchets up the stakes significantly; their angle of approach here weaving Chrome-plated and dystopian shaded tangents through a series of emotionally loaded and pop savvy oblique advances that are absolutely breathtaking in their collective impact. This album was shopped around all over back in the day and deemed "too weird" by one and all. Feh! Silly children...they missed the boat on a stone cold classic..."

Finally available from BUNKERPOP. More information and photos at www.bunkerpop.com

A truly amazing, endless piece of music...  Includes a 24" x 36" poster and a small lyric booklet. Links to song samples are available at the store: http://bunkerpop.bigcartel.com/

AVAILABLE NOW! A full year after its inception, we are happy to announce BUNKERPOP's first release, a reissue of Dutch post-punk band COITUS INT.'s debut 7", the DEAD EXCITEMENT EP. All the original artwork is included, plus some extra photos and contributions. One of our favorite records ever!

From the Still Single blog:

"Early punk reissue from a Utrecht band of college kids (at the time - 1980 when this was made) who sound really eager to drink and challenge the wits of the unarmed, and play some intellectual/better-than-you kind of jittery scrape that's of a piece with most of the Dutch punk scene I've heard from that era. They remind at points of a less dance-oriented Gang of Four, eager to play a riff until it cries uncle and do some spiteful narration atop of it, before kicking into some more melodic, wavo-minded rock. Unassuming at first, the five-to-six songs here get more exciting with repeat spins, particularly the B-side offerings "Trap Questions" and "Dry Up Soon." For the seasoned, hey, one more drop of Everclear in a big tub full of Hawaiian Punch, but if this is the band that makes you want to play music, by all means, follow that dream."
