Here's an update on BDR Records stuff...

The 1st press of the Retros sold out, so we made 200 more. The second pressing is in the same silk screened cover, but it's mustardy gold and black instead of red and black. The second pressing doesn't come with the free CD, but it has the same full color insert as the first press. Of those 200 pressed, close to half are spoken for. The rest will be ready to ship in about one week. For those of you who want the CD format, we are down to less than 20 copies. CDs are not available for wholesale any longer.

Dear John 7"s are sold out, but we have about 40-50 copies that have a slight storage warp. They play fine, but we're still deciding if we'll make these available. Next up is the Max Load LP. It will have their X-Rod b/w Magazine Sex 7" and demos, all recorded 1979-1983. Later this year should be some type of Welders collection with more unreleased material.

If you'd like to reserve A Retros LP before we sell the rest wholesale, just email with your shipping address to: Jason 'at' RerunRecordsSTL.com   We'll let you know when they're ready to ship.

(2nd press cover is gold & black)
THE RETROS-Inner City Rockers - The Retros 1979 LP+CD or CD (BDR #4)
The Retros were arguably the best Punk band in St. Louis during their brief existence. From 1978-1981 they wowed crowds at parties, VFW Halls and bowling alleys with their infectious Punk-Pop anthems. Plus, they opened for the Ramones at the legendary Mississippi Nights club, a coup for any band in the supposedly non-Punk-friendly Midwest.

A couple attempts at recordings were made, but the Retros produced no official releases during their lifespan. In the Spring of 1979, the band was the subject of a final exam for a friend?s studio recording class at Webster University. When the exam was finished, the Retros took advantage of the couple hours of leftover studio time. They ripped through twelve originals in a quick, live-in-the studio type set up. Limited time meant no overdubs and only a couple retakes. The block of studio time was completely exhausted with the recording, and they didn't even have time for playback. Without access to another 4-track machine, the reel ended up on a shelf in Soundman/Manager, Don Hollenbeck's closet and was nearly forgotten. It would be almost thirty years before these recordings were heard by ANYONE.

The LP includes the entire twelve song session, and the CD adds four bonus, live tracks. The 2nd press of the LP is limited to 200 copies in a silk screened cover with a full color insert featuring photos, gig posters and liner notes. The CD format comes in a standard jewel case and is limited to 200 copies with alternate art.

DEAR JOHN-Frustrated Conversation b/w I Don't Want Her To Know 7" (BDR #5)
St. Louis didn't have the quite the thriving Power Pop scene as that of other blue-collar Midwestern cities Milwaukee or Champaign, but what little it did have was cut from the same cloth. Dear John was one of the few, and like their counterparts from those more Northern regions, they too worshiped '70s guitar-based pop like Big Star, the Shoes and the Raspberries.

The band only lasted a couple years, but they managed to release one regionally acclaimed single in 1981 on their own A.K.A. Records. They broke up the first time before the record was even back from the pressing plant, and even though they would briefly reform a year or so later....Dear John soon called it quits for good.

The single has been a tough find for Power Pop collectors, easily fetching $40-60 on auction sites. We found out why it has been hard to locate, when Robert Kuhlmann of Dear John let us know he found half the vinyl from the original pressing in storage during a visit to his mom's house! They had only printed a small number of sleeves at the time, so we've repackaged the remaining, original vinyl copies in a new sleeve featuring liner notes, gig posters and other ephemera. This re-release is limited to the 350 copies on hand. The first 100 copies include a download coupon for the single plus two bonus tracks from the same recording session.

We are trying to raise some quick cash to keep the label moving and recoup some unforeseen costs, so we're selling a handful of test pressings for our releases. All test pressings have alternate art and are hand numbered on the record label A-side and the back of the sleeve. The Gruberger Bros alternate art became the stock art, actually...but it's still slightly different. The BOB tests are editions of 10 copies per variation. (Approved tests are now sold out.) The rejected test has slightly "flatter" sound. All other 7" test pressings are editions of 15 copies. The picture sleeves are pro printed on nice, thick cardstock...except BOB, which is on regular color laser stock. The sleeve shown are from the digital files, so they don't show the numbering. The 12" test pressings have full color art that is 11 x 17, wrapped around a blank, white LP jacket. They are also numbered on the back and the record labels.

We're charging more for the VOM tests, because we had some additional expenses added to the already, really high production costs. The stock copies of that release will be more than our other releases due to that as well. We still think it'll be well worth it. Plus, if you get a test pressing, you'll have the new, remastered version several weeks before your other record geek friends. You'll have plenty of time to rub it in their faces! The rejected version sounds/plays the same, but it has a wider gap in one song. The sleeve is the rejected color sleeve art.

Here's what we have available...prices and quantity available:

BOB-The Things That You Do - Rejected test $12.00 - Qty 4
Reactors-It's Not Important b/w Cold Eyes 7" $15.00 - Qty 2
VOM-Live at Surf City - Rejected test $25.00 - Qty 4
VOM-Live at Surf City - Approved test $25.00 - Qty 2
Manic Depressives/0:30 Second Flash-split mLP $25.00 - Qty 7
Gruberger Brothers-Greetings from Reading, PA. LP $25.00 - Qty 7

If you want to a stock copy of the BOB or Reactors 7", add $5 for each to your order. Stock copies of the others are not yet available to add to this sale.

Postage for any size order is $3 in the U.S., $5 Canada and $8 rest of the world

You can PM here to reserve and send questions, orders and Paypal to: jason@rerunrecordsstl.com

Test press sleeves:

The Manic Depressives is RED with black and white,
but it's turning an odd color scheme here for some reason...

If you're not familiar with any of these...here are the quick descriptions:

-BOB-Things That You Do b/w Thomas Edison 7? (RERUN #005) ? Reissue of the brilliant, debut single from 1980 by one of San Francisco?s best Punk/Wave bands. Comes in a heavy duty glue pocket sleeve with large fold out insert featuring photos, liner notes and a new interview with members of the band. Pressing of 500 copies on black vinyl.

-The Reactors-It?s Not Important b/w Cold Eyes 7? (RERUN #008)  ? Reissue of the sole release by the Austin, TX based Reactors...of many bands to use the name. Originally released in 1980 on Stress Records...Daniel Johnston's long time cassette label. Two intense, moody punk killers! The original sleeve and labels are reproduced, along with previously unpublished photos, gig posters and a new interview with band leader Mike Runnels.

-VOM-Live at Surf City 7?ep (RERUN #006) ? Finally! A fully authorized reissue of the Richard Meltzer fronted, pre-Angry Samoans So-Cal Punk classic from 1978. Remastered from the original tapes and including a bit more than the original release! The first pressing will be released as two editions of 500 copies. One edition will have a high quality reproduction of the original B&W sleeve, and the second will feature a new color take on the artwork by original designer Ronn Spencer! Both editions comes with an insert featuring new liner notes and unreleased photos!

-Manic Depressives/0:30 Second Flash-split mLP (RERUN #010) ? A collection of studio material from two, great buzz-saw punk bands from New Orleans. Both bands were the brain child of Larry Holmes (aka L the P) who ran the legendary Vinyl Solution record label and Final Solution fanzine. The A side collects the Manic Depressives 7?ep and comp tracks from 1980-1981, and the B side is the unreleased 0:30 Second Flash EP from 1981.

-The Gruberger Brothers-Greetings From Reading, PA LP (RERUN #012) ? A full LP of never-before-heard U.S. Punk and Fanzine Rock 1978-1980. From the same guys who brought you proto-punk legends O.Rex and '77 punk gawds the Afrika Korps. The Grubergers parted ways with the rest of the 'Korps and relocated to Reading, PA. In early 1978 they recorded but never managed to release an eight song, punk EP under the name Spike. We've collected that EP along with other, unreleased studio sessions for an LP that hints at what a second Afrika Korps LP could have sounded like if the Grubergers had stuck around. Mastered from the original tapes, and we even got Kenne Highland to give us his reaction to recordings! Pressed in an edition of 500 copies with full color cover and insert featuring liner notes.

The Manic Depressives/0:30 Second Flash-split mLP (RERUN #010)
Both bands were the brain child of Larry Holmes who ran the legendary Vinyl Solution record label and the Final Solution fanzine in New Orleans. Beginning in 1979, Vinyl Solution released singles by early punk bands Red Rockers, Shell Shock, Toxin III and other locals, along with the scene defining No Questions, No Answers compilation LP. The vinyl releases are U.S Punk classics, and his Final Solution fanzine was by far, the best documentation of the early New Orleans punk scene. Making sure to cover all angles, Larry put the Manic Depressives together. He choose pals like local loonie Mandeville Mike and members of the Models to fill the line up. The band didn't last too long, but they managed to leave behind a 7"ep and a two compilation cuts of tough, yet melodic speed punk. When the Manic Depressives ended, Larry formed the similar sounding 0:30 Second Flash with another group of friends. They recorded a four song EP and played live a few times, but they were over even faster than the Manic Depressives. The EP was not released as planned, and Larry, like many others got bored with punk when it turned hardcore.

We've collected the complete recordings of both bands on a 45rpm 12". Side one has the Manic Depressives 7"ep and compilation tracks from 1980-1981, while side two is the unreleased 0:30 Second Flash 7"ep from 1981. Pressed in a an edition of 500 copies on black vinyl, housed in a color jacket with previously unpublished photos and liner notes.

...and our second piece of 12" vinyl for November!

The Gruberger Brothers-Greetings From Reading, PA LP (RERUN #012)
Jay and Solomon Gruberger were born to play music. They formed the legendary proto-punk/living room band O.Rex in 1973, when younger brother Jay was a mere 12 years old. Future Gizmos lead singer Kenne Highland joined the band for sporadic jam sessions in the Gruberger's Brooklyn home. Beating most punks to the punch, O.Rex managed to release a three song maxi-single on their own Oral Records in late 1976. By that time, Kenne was a member of the Gizmos as well as a full time Marine! Within a few months, Kenne and the Grubergers would meet Kim Kane of the Slickee Boys, and it was this meeting of the minds that would form the Afrika Korps. They immediately set about recording what would become their monster, 22 song debut LP. Music To Kill By was released to great critical acclaim in late 1977, but the Grubergers would soon part ways with the rest of the Korps.

Those who stuck around would drop the Afrika and release a second album. Meanwhile, Solomon and Jay relocated from Brooklyn to Reading, PA and tried to form a new band. Having trouble finding a drummer but determined to keep things moving, in early 1978 they recorded an eight song EP under the name Spike. They took photos for the cover and even titled the EP "90 Miles Per Hour", but the record never made it to press. The Grubergers would continue to record at the same studio over the next couple years but nothing was released from those sessions. Jay would go on to work as a bass player for hire until his tragic death in 1993, and although Solomon continued to play for enjoyment, they never did play their own material for the public after moving to Reading.

It was during the production of Gulcher's O.Rex double CD collection in 2009 that we learned of these recordings. We knew they shouldn't remain unheard, so we collected the Spike EP and the other, unreleased studio sessions from 1978-1980 for an LP that hints at what a second Afrika Korps LP could have sounded like if  the Grubergers had stuck around. Mastered from the original tapes, and we even got Kenne Highland to give us his reactions to these recordings! Pressed in an edition of 500 on black vinyl, with full color cover and insert with liner notes.

Probably not a ton of interest for anyone here, but I'm selling a pile of '70s rock mags and a couple oddball things on eBay. I'll be selling a pile of more Punky and related stuff in a few weeks. Still need to get it together and compare doubles in my own stacks.

Up now...Creem, Circus, an issue of New Haven Rock Press, an issue of Star-Club News, couple issues of Rollin' Rock, a bunch of St. Louis/KSHE radio editions of Phonograph Records that are amazingly clean, Hit Parader, Crawdaddy, etc.

Reactors-It's Not Important b/w Cold Eyes 7"
(2011-RERUN #008)

Several great punk bands have used the name the Reactors...from San Bernardino, New York City, Austin...and Tulsa, as long as you count Los Reactors. The Austin based Reactors was led by Mike Runnels, and although they may not have shared the same longevity or success as that of the Big Boys or Dicks...in 1980 they left behind one single as proof of their brief existence. Two moody punk killers. Six intense minutes of nervous desperation.

Rerun Records is pleased to bring you an authorized reissue of this classic single. The original picture sleeve is reproduced along with previously unpublished photos, gig posters and a new interview with Mike Runnels. Limited to 500 copies on black vinyl, housed in a heavy, cardstock sleeve.

I lost my vinyl copy of M.O.T.O.'s-This Corpse Is A Warning LP on Resonance years ago. Although, I still have my original cassette version and the CDR Paul was selling..or still is...I need the vinyl.

I saw the copies for sales on Discogs...looking for a minty stateside copy if possible. Please PM if you have one to get rid of. I would prefer to buy...since my trade/sale list is way outta date. I'll gladly entertain specific trade offers, though.

BOB-The Things That You Do b/w Thomas Edison 7"
(2011-Rerun Records #005)

BOB formed in the middle of the late ?70s San Francisco punk scene and went on to release two singles and an LP on Dumb Records before calling it quits in 1983. "The Things That You Do" b/w "Thomas Edison" 7" from 1980 was their stunning Wave/Punk debut. The unassuming picture sleeve, non-descript band name and lack of widespread distribution upon its original release didn't afford them the same level of notoriety shared by some of their Bay Area counterparts...even if their sound and ideas were well ahead of the curve. It's long been championed as a "must own" platter by obsessive record geeks, but it's been out of print and tough to track down for nearly three decades.

Rerun Records is proud to present a deluxe reissue of this amazing record. Remastered and pressed in an edition of 500 hand numbered copies on black vinyl. The single comes packaged in a heavyweight card stock, glue pocket sleeve with a 7" x 14", double sided insert featuring liner notes, a new interview with band members and unpublished photos.

The first 50 copies come with a replica pinback button of the original BOB-"boxing glove" design. 1" button - black ink on bare metal button backing. Only available via direct mailorder or in person from Rerun Records!

Available for direct mailorder from Rerun Records.

Here's another mixed batch of crud for you to look at on Ebay. Trying to cash in on a few rare CDs before they're worthless, and a buncha vinyl. Funds used to fuel upcoming record label projects. High starting price on things I'm not dying to sell...and since it's free to list at any level right now, figured it was worth a shot. I listed 99 items yesterday, but 10 listings aren't showing up...one of them being a copy of Alex Chilton's-Like Flies on Sherbert...the superior, original version/song line up on Peabody. I'll get that fixed tonight.

Music Shit / New article on St. Louis pre-punk band The Moldy Dogs
« on: December 08, 2010, 07:42:28 AM »
Here's an article that came out very recently on The Moldy Dogs. These guys were a '70s pre-punk band from St. Louis with Screamin' Mee-Mees connections. Paul "Dirt" Wheeler played bass on the Mee-Mees-Live From The Basement EP, among other mingling. Wolf Roxon moved to NYC and was in the Power Pop band Walkie Talkie.

...and edited to tell you something Clay just reminded me of...major record collector Paul Major was a founding member and is now in Endless Boogie...and they're also major.

Anyway...it's a good read:

I picked this 7" up at a local store recently. It was actually mixed in their "oldies" section. I gave it a quick spin, and it's pretty experimental/arty....uh, something. No year or other info listed, but it "feels" like it's older. Not sure why...the pressing/sleeve feel/look early '80s or late '70s to me. I haven't been able to find anything on ye olde Google machine. Anyone know what the story is...any other band connections?
