well, it's awfully generous to throw out the "on pace" argument with Niekro, cuz pitchers so often figure out how to pitch to the new guy, expose his weakness, and make him look worthless. Again, I hope I'm wrong, but I saw too many very ugly swings in the second half last year.
All I'm saying with Schmidt is that the fastball may be dust, no matter how greedy the sucker is in a contract year. He can't will 96. If he can't figure out how to "pitch" more consistently without being able to bail himself out with the high heat, 18 is a lot to ask.
And re: Cain. Have we learned nothing from Jerome Williams? Why does everybody assume that when a kid has part of a great season that he's going to star in the next? Don't get me wrong- I liked what I saw, but I didn't like everything, and I saw him get away with far too many fat pitches against teams who were out of it and collectively hungover. I will assume absolutely nothing from Cain. I can only hope. Lowry righted the disaster of his first half and he has some innings under his belt, but he still hasn't pitched a successful complete season. Schmidt and Morris are solid, Lowry is encouraging and two giant (sorry) questions marks with Cain and Hennessy (or whichever scrub fills the fifth slot- Jaime Wright? Yikes!).
If they get Troy Glaus I might have to go back to counseling. You just mentioning the name assures me nightsweats tonight, having repressed his monstrous presence deep into my subconscious. Thanks.
