The Sunday Painters were wide-ranging DIY art-punks. Operating out of Wollongong, Australia in the early 80s, they seemed to want to be every band from the Velvet Underground to King Crimson to the Sex Pistols to Throbbing Gristle. And they wrote catchy, often beautiful, songs, the greatest of which are also commentaries on the costs of containing such multitudes.

But few people heard them. Wollongong was a working-class town, and the Painters had to make and distribute their three singles and two LPs in editions of 250 or 500 copies on their own Terminal Records via EMI custom. Combine that scarcity with their rapid shifts from pop to punk to industrial, and it?s easy to understand that anybody who even found the records might have been daunted by the vast claim of a band tethered just enough to London and New York to know what was afoot there, but sufficiently distant to go off on a marsupial evolution all their own.

Now, Whats Your Rupture?, in partnership with Terminal Records, presents an LP compilation of the Painters? three DIY singles. Transferred from the original reels and remastered. Included are an oversized, newsprint poster and a download code for the LP?s tracks, plus nine more from the handmade cassette of a 1983 show recorded live at Melbourne?s Venetian Room.

Jeff! you got it.  There are two mixes for Time Off, and the differences are as you describe. The Shark Fucks version appears on Tronics cassette... and shark fucks might have been a sampler of the two tapes... SF is on hub bub, of course.

This might be one reissue 7" I will be picking up to upgrade over an og. The "Shark Fucks" 45 pressing from '81 has noise on every copy I've heard.

Cool news though. The LP has gone under appreciated in spite of Shark Fucks' notoriety. (same studio session, right?)

The Alien 7" is really noisy when compared to the master recording...either from pressing or mastering. You'll notice a difference.

This Lp is probably under appreciated because you could never buy it... Alien either went under after LBBF came out or just didnt press more than a few hundred LPs... An NME article on Tronics from 1982 was already stoking the legend of the album...and not selling it  "Love Backed By Force is now a collectors item, part of the Tronics growing mythology that the faithful guard like a sacred temple flame." And Zarjaz has  refused to re-release it... until now.

There are a lot more Tronics recordings and will be more reissues to come... and even some shows.

Love Backed By Force registers as an instant classic of outsider folk-pop, a true mutant of an LP that never sounds the same way twice. It may take a few listens for its pull to take effect, but once you settle into its orbit, it?ll be difficult to remove yourself. Music will never sound the same again, and in the world of Love Backed By Force, it doesn?t even sound the same from song to song on the same album.  Layer upon layer of close-talking lyrics are buffeted by mind-clogging guitar (even the acoustic tracks create immense blocks of light-absorbing interference in your brain), synthesizer abuse, and rudimentary drumming, made by a man who regularly discussed seeing ghosts to general disbelief.
