The only standard we hold anyone to is to have courage and please try to be excellent.

my friend, this is excellent advice for DJs, and for life in general.  I'm getting a tattoo of this.
I would suggest a mandatory weekend retreat to Algoma, WI for all young DJs ... it could be a potentially life-changing experience.

Anytime your media outlet becomes the voice for "the next big thing," you're instantly fucked.  It's happened over and over again--I actually did read SPIN in junior high--this would have been '91 or '92--and that's how I found out about Royal Trux.  Alternative Press once had Fugazi on the cover (now it tends to be Linkin Park et al).  As soon as you move away from covering the stuff that moves you, the stuff that you find just by being a music freak, because you CAN'T HELP talking about this or that you just heard, and towards finding the band that's going to fill the niche created by Flaming Lips or something--you're instantly less interesting.  Because you're trying to use a template that already exists to determine the future, not breaking ground for a whole new future.

DJ Rick ... is KVDS totally "freeform," like for everyone?  When I worked at the now-defunct Underground here at Ohio State, there were mandatory playlists for everyone with a few slots here and there for "DJ's choice."  Which is lame, but on the other hand, there were tons of kids that were just totally clueless about music that wanted to DJ (I mean really clueless, like into-mainstream-pop-country clueless).  Do you just turn people loose to play whatever they want?  And if so, how do you brainwash them into loving good stuff?

"Crimsonwave" ... I like it!!  Much better than the dismissive "girlpunk," which rubbed me the wrong way when I saw it on Doug's blog (I told him so, too).
Maybe I'm just being a defensive cunt, though ...

I don't think anyone has said "oh great, Pitchfork mentioned us, now we're gonna be swimming in money and pussy."

actually, Rich (Horseshit) says that like every day.

it looks like jim jones of pere ubu/mirrors/easter monkeys died as well:

"It is with a heavy heart that we inform you all that Jim Jones has passed away. Jim was our colleauge, our collaborator, our bandmate and our friend.

Jim had suffered through numerous health problems over the past decade or so - but all things considered - seemed to be doing okay. Thanks to his unuasual schedule (basically sleeping all day and staying up all night) we haven't gotten to see him very much recently.

Jim was a fixture of the Cleveland music scene - having played in numerous cool bands (Easter Monkeys, the Mirrors, Pere Ubu, H&G, and many others).
Primarily known for his guitar work, Jim was also proficient on synths and bass. He was an ardent music fan - with catholic tastes running from classical to free jazz to rock ' n roll.

He passed away at home."

hmmm, not a good day to be a middle-aged cult musician ...

Most people--including people that take Pitchfork seriously--don't really care about music.  They won't seek out anything on their own.  It's not a generational thing, I don't think pop audiences of any era were in general terribly enlightened about music.  But can we all just agree that this is probably at least a harbinger of a good short-term windfall of publicity (and maybe some $$$) for those involved?  I sure hope so.  If only so Kevin will get off my couch and Rich will buy some beer for once.

Jokes, Kevin, jokes!  I kid.

Cigarette amps rule! Mine's pretty beat to hell. Winston's (my brand, natch).

I've got a Music Man combo, 4x10. Kevin, you wanna use it on Friday?

the BF got me a ciggie amp for Xmas ... it is totally awesome.  You really can get some gnarly sounds out of 'em, you'd never think you could power a 4x12 cabinet with the thing but you can and it sounds sweet.

Was just talking about the Delfonics (and Chi-Lites and Frederick Knight) yesterday! Love that falsetto soul.

Also picked up "The Devil is Dope" by the Dramatics and "The Nitty Gritty" by Shirley Ellis.  Not falsetto soul, but good sides.

"The Devil is Dope" is DOPE.
and thanks to whomever directed Nika to Fusetron for Shadow Ring records, you helped me as well ... I've been scouring Ebay to no avail.

I like Steve Miller, but he's got two phases, which kinda overlap. the first few albums are more frisco lite psych cum hard rock cum, ie records like children of the future and sailor. most dad rockers dont listen to that stuff. that is more the quicksilver messenger service crowd. and then there are the albums from the joker on, which try to fuse some of the lite psych with california cocaine country rock. i used to get stoned and listen to fly like an eagle a lot when i was a teen. A LOT.  anyway the stuff from the joker on is dad rock. i'd actually rather listen to the eagles than dad rock steve miller. maybe not rather but they are equally good/lame.  i'd say fleetwood mac has the similar date mark as miller: the early peter greene stuff, some of which fucking smokes, and then the stevie nicks crap, none of which i can abide by.

excellent breakdown of Steve Miller's oeuvre for the uninitiated.  I love Children of the Future and Sailor and can always jam on some of the later radio hits as well.  early Fleetwood Mac is also great, I couldn't believe it when I was introduced to that stuff ... "this is the band that did 'Rumors' and 'Tusk'?!?"
