disco dancing!  disco rollerskating!  PCP-induced hallucinations!  RRM's flamboyant (and, I believe, self-designed) wardrobe!

I was wondering the same thing myself, actually.....I was like, "didn't we have another lousy backup QB at one point?"

Impressed that the Steelers pulled out a win yesterday.  Was not feeling so good about this one given last week's hideous performance against the Browns.  Thought Batch was experiencing early-onset senility but he looked pretty good yesterday (except for that 4Q interception).  Fucking JAMES HARRISON, yo!  Ah, the look of surprise and dismay on Flacco's face as JH stripped the ball.  Beating the Ravens always FEELS GOOD MANE.

I just listened to one of their "rap" songs, and it sounds like something the dude who buys $250 noise-cancelling headphones to listen to the Sea and Cake would describe as "fun". It's music that says, "I work hard, man, but when I get home, I leave the fuckin' monkey suit at the door, spark a bowl of choice nugs, braise some leeks, grate some Taleggio, erase my cache of ironic porn and wait like a puppy for my girlfriend to come home."

they act like they're the first pretentious white boys to be like "HEY YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD BE FUNNY IF WE RAPPED!  OH SHIT RAPPING IS FUNNY WHEN YOU CANT'T DO IT GOOD  WE KNOW HOW TO PLAY REAL MUSIC BUT WE'RE GONNA RAP INSTEAD  HYUK HYUK HYUK"

they are STUNNINGLY unfunny.

actually I have an addition to this thread:  can someone explain the musical appeal of Human Skab?  purchased Thunder Hips and Saddle Bags a few years ago on a whim and......I mean I HATE the sound of children's voices, so I guess I'm not in the target audience, but I found it totally unlistenable.  I'm sure he grew up to be a pretty swell guy though.

Hype creates a healthy reactionary cynicism, which to me is a protective gesture, it's intended to preserve your taste in music. There are also two distinct kinds of hype: 1) the genuine ritalin-like enthusiasm of someone in their 20s, totally immersed in a 24-7 social/music scene, who just thinks everything is gosh, so fucking awesome, right!?!?, be they blogger, small label owner or multi-band fixture and 2) the purely profiteering, cold-eyed, mechanistic hype generated by management-type professionals looking to capitalize on something they understand in purely fiscal terms.

Hype #1 doesn't bother me too much, in the end. It's laughable but it's totally human to lose your perspective and gush over everything that sounds close to your current sound crush, even if it kinda sucks. Hype #2 is the more insidious type, because it literally feeds off Hype #1, and it also tends to reward the parasitic copyists, but that's always how the music game has worked. The originators get the cred, the copyists get paid. You would think the internet, which is slowly cutting out the opinion middleman, would obviate this but it still holds true.

This just in, the following random records have held up: Final Solutions, The Sneeze, SYZ and Catatonic Youth EPs on Hozac, Birds of the Maya, Sightings catalog. No Balls LP still sounds exciting.

I think the thing that's annoying Haley is that there is a hybrid of Hype #1 and Hype #2..........it's the kind of thing that happens here.  it's hype-creation by music freaks in order to create cultural capital amongst our fellow music freaks (note:  HYPE MAY NOT TRANSLATE INTO ACTUAL SPENDABLE CURRENCY).  we build up shitty little bands via hype right here in our little corner of the world and then tear 'em back down.  it's just idle backlashing.  it's totally yawn-worthy, but I do like making fun of rich kids and their boring art bands.

man.......in this day and age of ubiquitous, weakly informed, tepidly written commentary, his voice really stood out.  will definitely miss Beat the Devil.  RIP.

and to clarify, I don't begrudge anyone their guns, I didn't grow up with 'em but a lot of people did, most people DON'T go on killing sprees......but I just didn't think when I was growing up in America that I was going to spend my life in a semi-warzone where shots could ring out at any time and I would HAVE to have a gun, whether or not I wanted to.  believe it or not, I just didn't ever think that (and I grew up in rural PA, where hunting is a SACRAMENT).  and now.....I guess I kind of think that.

You should not be afraid of guns, but the people that own them. I fired my first gun when I was about six years old. I think gun safety should be taught in school. If you are concerned about the high rate of gun ownership in your neck of the woods, and the people carrying them, well, I can't think of many more important reasons to own one yourself than that right there.

but that's my point.  I don't WANT to own a gun.  I'm not sure what me having a gun is going to do in the face of someone that a) owns a gun and b) actually REALLY WANTS to use it.  and even if I DID want to use it, what kinds of situations are going to develop?  some kind of shootout where the cops arrive on the scene and take out one or both of us?

Right away, Europeans get between six and eight weeks' vacation time each year.  As one American money manager said, Europeans "work for 10 months of the year and get paid for 14."  On top of that, Europeans pull six-, seven-hour days.  And even then, you wouldn't believe the lengths Europeans go to get out having to do any actual work while they're AT work.

Hold your horses. Exactly wich European countries offer their worker your above described dream scenario? If you arent working from day to day or week to week basis, wich gets more and more common in these days, the standard is 8 hour work per day, often more. No way you get 8 weeks paid vacation anywhere if you hold a normal job. 4 - 5 weeks is standard. The conditions is still way better than in the states but you are exaggerating

there are still some long-standing myths here in the US about Europe being the working man's dreamland.....but I'm sure they're wildly outdated.  I'm guessing the Americanization of your workforce (i.e. a slow descent into wage-slavery) has been a slow-but-steady trend for a while and will continue.  sorry mates :(  for real.  I wish there was still some socialist paradise I could dream about.....
