Non-Music Shit / Re: running a record label/mailorder
« on: December 03, 2010, 11:41:09 AM »
I've had two customers in the last 8 years who I have totally lost it on and told them in not so nice terms they are no longer allowed to order from me.  Most people are nice, some people are annoying, but  you have to take the good with the bad.  You are coming into the season of tons of "where are my records" emails though.  Media mail takes a back seat during the holidays so things slow down and people tend to get impatient.  A steady diet of bong hits makes it all manageable though.

hey Rich,
I've got a GREAT idea,
send me those transcripts...I'll make a zine!

Equally infuriating are the regular dispatches from Archives Canada

HILARIOUS!
how could I forget!

I know, they are so on the ball.
that letter arrives in the mail before I've received tests! ha

I actually met the guy who's responsible for finding the labels and mailing the requests.  I met him at a record show a few years back.  He's a really straight up guy.  I have another friend who works at the archives too.  He runs a local label as well.  Working at the archives sounds like the best job.  2 other friends of mine recently applied to work in the audio department there.  I guess they have a pretty big staff of techs who preserve old tape recordings and such.  I dunno much more about it, other than the verified comments that they have an incredible collection of canadian punk history in the vinyl library.

so I know where you're coming from on this one.
I actually have a box, now 12 releases thick, of records destined for the archives.  maybe one day I'll actually go in there?

Non-Music Shit / running a record label/mailorder

If you order an album, and pay 17.75 with shipping from Canada, you just got a steal of a fucking deal.
Don't email me a week after ordering and ask where it is...shut up and wait until it shows up.

here is the canadapost delivery standard
http://www.canadapost.ca/tools/pg/manual/pgservstds-e.asp#1757294

if you want the cheapest service, you got it
if you want the record in 5 days from ordering, then pay for it
if you don't see it in a month, then something went wrong, or the label is too slow
and if you think I go to the post office every day...you're fucked!
I go once every week (or 2 max)

this is not intended at the Termbo crowd.  I know all the people on here who order from me, and they're all patient and reasonable.  But certain records have garnered attention from different crowds, and now I've got to answer 5 emails a day about orders that were placed last week, which shipped yesterday.

I'd love to hear about the experiences of some of you who have been in similar situations.
I wanna know about all you people running distro/mailorders.  Do you ever just lose it on people?

I love the idea of the punk wars up in Toronto in the 70's/80's, where certain shopkeepers would just insult their annoying customers!
