i can think of one hand's worth of fingers of folks that can take such ancient music (dixieland country?) and honestly stone the hell out of it, bend it, twist it, melt it and warp it with out either being self consciously "weird" or npr/revial bull shit. one of the many things about them that cuts'em above most of the new 'weird' folks (such as jofo foster, she's a pretty lady but i don't listen to her records, never) is their actual song writing ability. i mean shit, beneath the 'kazoo exotica' these folks can write a damn song. they're way more than a damn hook, that is for sure.
before i heard them the black velvet fuckere guy (who has the same last name as one of the characters in "sweet movie", what is up w/ that?) - in an email described them to me as sorta placed in a similar vein as the better bassholes and michael hurley records or a less rocknroll cramps/panther burns. makes sense to me.
