Music Shit / Re: The Horshacks
« on: August 17, 2016, 03:58:39 PM »
Always loved tony's story of how his mom really liked the horshacks song "Get in a Porsche," and he couldn't break it to her it was actually "get an abortion." Which is actually one of their best songs!

Haha, "Get in a Porsche" is actually a pretty great title.

Now, I don't know from jazz but RE: jazz guitar, I always really liked the album "Undercurrent" by Jim Hall and Bill Evans. Really understated and solid playing, I've learned a lot from that record. Perfect album art too.

Check out the follow-up - Intermodulation. I find myself listening to it more than Undercurrent. Can't fuck with the Undercurrent cover though.

Worth reading (and shuddering):

Damn, yeah, an article that would otherwise just be pathetic and funny becomes terrifying in light of his presidential run.

Unfortunately, it does seem like it has the potential to be a powder keg. How could a militia justify being there? Fuxking hell. I guess I didn't think about people like that looking to mix it up with protestors.

Do I really have to vote for Hillary? I guess this shit is proving I may have to. I still don't think this orangutan can win. No chance in hell, but the mere possibility has me mentally packing my bags to cross the closest border

It sucks but I really hope people don't sit this election out. I don't want this thing to even be close, because you know if it is and it goes to Hillary, fucking Trump will demand a recount and throw all his money at disrupting the results for as long as he can.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Pokemon App

Basically anyone walking around playing Pokemon would already be walking around looking at their phone anyway.  The human landscape of this city looks no different than it did a month ago.

I can pretty much guarantee you it looks a lot different if you're around some "hot spot" or whatever they call the Pokemon-heavy areas.

Jeez, Eat Skull - Sick to Death is one of the BEST records from THAT era, where Termbo got in to some shit that everyone then seemed collectively embarrassed about later.

Taco Bell recently used 'A Love Supreme' in a commercial promoting the Taco Supreme.

cool! it is a proper rabbit hole this music. amazing for a tiny island.

if u ever happen to be in london then me and lemmy caution of black time and midnite mines fame do a monthly night in this rough boozer playing this kind of thing! we post tunes and events and stuff here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1026216090742296/

I may be spending upwards of a month in London later this year, if so I'll definitely hit this up! I'm crawling out of 5 years deep in the reggae rabbit hole. Still love and listen to it but for a while it's almost all I listened to after just being a casual fan for a long time. My favorite era is 78-84, especially Roots Radics/Junjo stuff. This is the stuff I like to listen to at home anyway - when it's played out in a club, bring on whatever, this shit sounds great loud.

Every time I go to check one of these out I end up watching a bunch of them. The Whitney Cummings etc one is classic Nardwuar, watching her go from annoyed to loving it. But fuck, Sarah Silverman's cameo in that one makes her looks like such a huge pain in the ass! Cringe-worthy.

These days it would be somewhere on the Northern CA coast - Stinson Beach, Pacifica etc. This is the area where I feel most at peace. My wife still occasionally brings up the possibility of moving to Portland, NYC, L.A, San Francisco - I love all those places but those ships have all sailed. I could deal with Portland - it's walkable, beautiful, has lots of beer & I have good friends there. But I like these cities existing as places to visit, they're easy, familiar, and you can pack a lot of shit in to a long-weekend visit & be happy to go home $300.00 poorer - full of good food, brew & records. It admittedly feels weird having lived in one city my entire life but it's also pretty cool that, at 45, I can go most anywhere & get hooked up with one thing or another. The people I grew up playing music with now own half the businesses here. And there's no replacing the friends I have here, period.

Great stuff, On-U Sound is the shit. Have you heard the Missing Brazilians album? SO GOOD. Got reissued last year. Phenomenal noisy dub/post-punk that I can't believe I didn't know about til a few months ago. Don't sleep on early Dub Syndicate, esp. the stuff w/ minimal vocals. Half of it sounds like Aphex Twin.

Hell yeah! When is Creation Rebel's Starship Africa going to get a re-release? I've been looking for a copy of that for less than $60 for years now. I've almost pulled the trigger for it's going rate a few times too.

Just found Starship Africa for $22 at a shop, fucking FINALLY! I was listening to some records at the store spacing out staring at the records on the wall, didn't even notice what I was looking at for a while. On-U records seem to show up in Sacramento somewhat often.

The World - 7"EP
Will appear near the top of my 2016 best-of list, to be sure.  Band-released version apparently delayed, but believe they'll have UK copies available on their US tour in May.  Anyway, total-package kinda affair/band, hits all marks perfectly.  Believe 2 tapes + a flexi are also forthcoming?  Who knows?  THE WORLD!  Please bring me a Rays EP next.

Hey dog, give me some more info on this un-Google-able 7"

The way 2016 is going so far, we may need an "Everyone: DEAD" topic.

My long lost package arrived today after being returned to the sender as undeliverable even though the address was exactly right. It took forever the 2nd time as well, I was not too happy that the dude re-sent the exact same package, since I figured something must've been hard to read on it (it was). But yeah, some hope for the lost packagers out there.
