Music Shit / Re: Grateful Dead
« on: July 07, 2015, 08:50:42 AM »
the whole collecting shitty bootlegs aspect of it.

Lots of non-shitty bootlegs out there, which is what I'm most interested in. I had to carve out a new place in my brain for them, as they don't scratch any musical itch I previously had. They're just the Dead. It's definitely not what I want to listen to when I want to hear psyche or country. I guess jazz is the closest, since I like the endless live variations on their "standards". Agreed that the random image inside the skull is beyond played-out. Look at me pointlessly defending the Dead.

I forgot Vinnie wasn't on the bus at the beginning of this thread. I think it's been mentioned already, but GREAT BAND.

Non-Music Shit / Re: UBER

This is a tough call. On the one hand I trust that Uber sucks (I don't know a ton about their behind-the-scenes deal) but speaking specifically to Portland, it takes FOREVER to get a cab there! Paul, I assume Uber has finally muscled in to Portland? It wasn't there last time I visited some months ago.

Music Shit / Re: Music to fall asleep to
« on: January 06, 2015, 01:12:12 PM »
I fall asleep to the white noise/"waterfall" setting on this thing every night. It's getting to where I can't sleep without it. The surf settings are pretty fun to mess with as well. Failing that, Eno - Discreet Music on repeat.

I often think of selling mine but I'm too paranoid of ebay siding with some shady buyer to do it. No idea what this thing even fetches these days.

Eric busting out Bourbonese Qualk! That made me dig out this tape comp that I bought back in the day solely because The Inca Babies were on it. I didn't know what to make of most of it at the time but I was fascinated by it & still am I guess. Every time I listen to it a new song catches my ear. "Newton Told Me" is a deep Go-Betweens track & still one of my favorites.

A good reference point is his first record, Something Else!, which does have piano. It's still a fine record but you can feel the piano keeping things on the ground a bit too much.

Weeknight shows are really a bummer now.

I would even say not an option!

I live in a city that pretty much ONLY gets weekday shows (or Sunday shows, same thing) thanks to our proximity to cities where bands want to play weekend shows. Sucks! I figured one good thing about getting old would be that a new crop of kids would "support the scene" but I still find myself feeling like I should go to these weekday shows to add a body to the mostly empty room.

Music Shit / Re: The story behind The Aislers Set

I really wish I could've made the trip to SF to see this show, saw them a bunch back then & I imagine it was a pretty fun reunion of audience members as well as band members. Why the hell their SF reunion show was on a Sunday is beyond me.

The Wind's pretty good.  I got mixed feelings about 'em.  They're into Motown and Elvis Costello, which, you know... Not ideal, but the record's got charm.

Will give few more spin but i had in mind i was going to like it without trying but not really the case….

The only song I really like is "I Am the Garden." Other than that one song I don't see the appeal of the band.

Damn, I love the Wind record - can't believe a few people on here who seem like they'd dig it don't. Granted I stumbled on it many years ago with no idea what it was so there was no preconception. Thought I'd found some lost gem until I discovered it was in "the canon". One of my favorite power-pop records (a tag that only kind of fits). I like how goofy & earnest these guys come off. Arguably the best record on Cheft.

Music Shit / Re: The Equals!
« on: July 24, 2014, 02:53:14 PM »
Aren't they just mainly "overlooked" in the US? Seems there's a pretty healthy awareness of them in Europe etc.  Seems like most used UK/EU records stores I've been to have had an Equals section, something you pretty much never see in the US. Now that you mention it, HOW has there still not been a nice reissue or three of Equals stuff?? Gotta be a reason ($$ most likely), seeing as so much middling shit has been reissued.

Still trying (and failing) to get into the stones. Whatever. Kinda wanna read Richards' book.

It took me years of constant listening to finally crack their dense structures & elusive melodies, but they FINALLY clicked a few months ago. Glad I stuck it out, there's a few decent tunes in there.

Info on Oroukayo, pls.  That cover is great.  Found nothing on line.

Seconded, I was intrigued by the cover, even more now that there's zero online presence. How is that possible?

A few of the records in that post have zero online presence; I think we're being 'had'.

Well!  Nicely done, Eiteews.  We been "framed."  8)

Haha, I love it! Especially great that they're sandwiched between good ol' everyday records. Happy 4th fuckers, I'm listening to the Sound of Young Stockton.
