Music Shit / Re: Recent Acquisitions
« on: June 16, 2009, 09:48:36 AM »
That's the best Steve Miro record - love it! And that IQ Zero single took me forever to find! Just as good if not better than their Object Music single.
Speaking of... really stoked on LTM's Object Music reissue series - way more exhaustive than I thought it'd be and the liners are really cool and extensive. I thought it'd end with the 'Auteur Label' CD, but also recently picked up the Grow-Up 2CD thing and the two Spherical Objects CDs. Haven't gotten the Noyes Brothers one (don't think I've actually ever heard that stuff), but wouldnt doubt if there's more coming... Totally weird and underrated label that doesnt seem like it ever fit in (except maybe the first Passage single and the IQ Zero single, it seems like it was probably always sort of 'uncool') - and it's just that outsider-ness that makes that stuff seem less dated than most of the other reissued stuff from that era. I don't realkly think too many people care now either (I have to imagine the LTM guy has money just begging to be thrown away, and I thank him for it).
Anyone bought any of those other Auteur label comps?

Pre Fix - Underneathica-Ectomorphine 7''
I.Q. Zero - She's So Rare 7''
Steve Miro - Up And About 7''
Self Control - Fear Of Rehearsals 7''

Music Shit / Re: More Shit to Shit On, Redux: Tyvek in Dusted
« on: June 04, 2009, 11:21:28 AM »
I own two Tyvek records and have only seen them once, so I'm far from an expert on whatever fact errors the writer supposedly committed. That said, I think the reviewer gave a decent idea of what they sound like and she obviously likes the record so I don't see what the fuss is over.

Hypothetically.......I've never heard Tyvek before, but I doubt I'd be into it if the drummer only plays one tom and no snare or cymbals.

Quote
Its tunes rattle along on fiercely minimalist beats (the drummer stands, and plays only one tom)

OMGZ HOW DOES SHE NOT KNOW ALL THAT WE KNOW ABOUT TYVEK

There's a difference between not knowing and disknowing.

I find the above post quite amusing.

I should also note that with Drew Pizza-ing out this weekend, it will be the debut of the Mantles big band, with Glenn Donaldson (Der TPK/Skygreen Leopards/Jewelled Antler, etc) filling in on guitar for a few songs and Matt K on keyboards...
We will indeed have the singles at the show.

yup, Trust is in there. B-side also from the Jason Quever-recorded session from nearly two years go, right before Jermaine left the band and the old dudes joined. I'm not on it, so I can not sound like a shithead when I say that I think it's really really good.

'trust' is 'don't lie (aka trust)' from their myspace i suppose? great song, preordered.

a few favorite guitar sounds that come to mind while I wait for my work database to wake up.
George Best-era Wedding Present
Bodines 'Therese'
that dutch punk band Green
Membranes
Flux o' Pink Indians
Cabaret Voltaire

Totally different aimless thread here but when Albini came up, it got me thinking again... though he can swing a decent guitar sound, it will always almost certainly be ruined by my least favorite snare sound. I don't like it in general, but even worse, who thought it would be a good idea for him to record bands like Low & Bedhead? Absolutely no subtlety!! Despite the fact that the rest of the band is permanently in hushed-tone territory, the drums still sound gargantuan and oppressive.

Hey
Josh who does Good Village (Whysp/Lowdown guy) just put this out & brought it in to Revolver. I don't think he's going to mess around with mailorder, but you can order it from Midheaven (even though it won't show on the site). Just email order@midheaven.com. I believe the mailorder price is $3.85 plus shipping.

If you're a TVPs fan, you're gonna get it regardless of what anyone says, but I will say it's a good one. One side is classic TVPS punk racket, the other side a solid example of one of Sir Dan's wistful downers.
Anyway, here's the info:

TELEVISION PERSONALITIES
"My New Tattoo" 7"
Good Village GVR 2

***What can one expect from an artful, aging mod? Cult favorites, THE TELEVISION PERSONALITIES, offer up two new, well crafted, melodic and spirited pop songs on this 7-inch.  Both sides are steeped in the charming intelligence and humor of the band's auteur DANIEL TREACY. In "My New Tattoo," Treacy lays out his aged and vulnerable self and builds into a Who-like reverie of take me for what I am!  Here the band is focused, direct, and in top form.  A rocking, rallying call to those who may never quite fit in and know its for the better! Drumming is provided by JOHN BENNETT who fans will recognize as an original member dating back to the mid-?70s and who also appeared on the John Peel favored first single, "14th Floor/ Oxford St. W1." "Funny He Never Married" paints a wistful and reflective mood of which Treacy has always been a master of conveying.  This is a sound which has launched so many bands and scenes; all of whom owe Daniel Treacy a nod (or a wink) for inspiration.  Sensitive and personal, yet utterly familiar and comforting in spirit.  The magic of pop shines brightly here! Released in 2009 with cover artwork from California artist STACIE WILLOUGHBY and limited to a pressing of 500 copies.

Hey
Just posted about the new Mantles 7" coming, which reminds me that we're playing tonight at the Eagle with Ty Segall, Bridez, and the Numerators...

Also, record release show (god I hate that phrase, but how else is there to say it? I'll have the decency to leave out the word 'party') coming May 30th w/Brilliant Colors and Aerosols... at Amnesia...

Hiya folks -
Mt St Mtn asked that I re-post this here...The new Mantles single is finally (almost) out!
Don't worry, I didn't put this one out, so you'll probably have timely shipping. Here's the info!

THE MANTLES "Trust" b/w "Secret Heart" 7 inch {MTN-O5}
limited to 300 copies, 45rpm, black vinyl
1 color silk-screened outer cover
$6.50 ppd (overseas orders, $5 + shipping cost, contact first), paypal to mtstmtn@hotmail.com
... THIS RECORD WILL SHIP IN ABOUT 2-3 WEEKS

With the deceptively determined surge of a sleepy glacier, The
Mantles have been quietly and slowly perfecting their trademarked
dark n' dirge pop sound over the past few years. Starting as a trio,
the band recorded their Dulc-i-Tone single with the mysterious &
unreliable Cram-Ro production team. The band then dug themselves out
of the Cram-Ro shit-morass for a batch of sunnier sounds courtesy
Papercuts' Jason Quever, two songs of which make up their forthcoming
Mt. St. Mtn single. Soon after this session, the band lost a bass
player but simultaneously absorbed both halves of the Cram-Ro team
(including the half that sometimes gets "Personal" wink-wink), and
it's this current four-piece incarnation that recorded the upcoming
Siltbreeze full-length album with Gris Gris' Greg Ashley.
Reviewers & showgoers alike regularly struggle without success to pin
down the Mantles sound, though the Paisley Underground scene somehow
seems to come up alot, and though reviewers have an affinity for the
words 'New' and 'Zealand' when describing the Mantles, band members
insist that Mantles songwriting mainman and Graeme Downes-lookalike
Michael O. has no idea what Flying Nun is other than a goofy TV show,
nor is he familiar with that "Slitbree" label people keep talking
about.

For sf people, please also note:
Single release show on 5/30 at Amnesia w/Brilliant Colors & The Aerosols.
Show tonight at the Eagle with Ty Segall, Numerators, and Bridez...

Meat Whiplash 7"

Funny, I was gonna say Fire Engines. Their sounds are like paper cuts.

I actually meant the band Meat Whiplash, but yeah, Fire Engines have some classic leads, both their painful ones and their super melodic ones.

Sea Urchins singles
Action Painting singles

i think you only mean the first action painting single ("these things happen"), "mustard gas" sounds nothing like it.

sea urchins flexis for me - or more specifically "cling film."

i'm going to add that as far as current live guitar sounds - i think alex curtin is in need of a solo guitar lp.

I'm pretty into all Action Painting's (totally different) phases, down to the their respective guitar sounds - that's why that band was so great. "These Things" is the tops, and yeah, that guitar sound is one of my favorites, but I also love the "Mustard Gas" single. And actually I think I've listened to their Damaged Goods swan song single even more than the other two over the years (can't go without mentioning the amazing label art on that one either)...

I made 200 more, but they still need covers which will likely take me a week or two so I can't ship out any til then...

Anyway, thanks for your patience! The records are gone, but I've got a small re-press coming.  I'll keep you posted.

How small?

Hey people-
Apologies to anyone that had to wait two months for their order! And sorry if you emailed me and I didn't respond. Got kinda overwhelmed and started avoiding Termbo for fear of an e-lynching. It definitely wasn't a pay-for-the-pressing-with-your-pre-order situation -- I just fucked up and had way too few records ready at the outset for mailorder and ran out of covers too quick. Basically I suck at this and keep doing it at the expense of others.
Anyway, again, sorry if I haven't responded to you. All orders paid for by like April 10th or so have all been sent out and almost all should have arrived by now. I'm just now sorting through emails (I'll get to the ones with the subject line 'Fuck You' first), but if you're still waiting for your order or if you wanna get in touch, just email me again (yakamashirecords@yahoo.com). If I don't get back in a day or so, bug me at work (matt@midheaven.com).
Anyway, thanks for your patience! The records are gone, but I've got a small re-press coming. I'll keep you posted.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / Re: EAT SKULL/GANGLIANS split
« on: February 26, 2009, 02:59:41 PM »
Hey guys-
Very sorry to anyone that is still waiting for their single. My screen died and I had to make a new one to finish the remaining covers - and then I moved and had to pack everything up and had to put it on the back burner for a couple weeks. Excuses, excuses.
I've been meaning to send apology emails to all teh folks still waiting, but just haven't had time. Anyone who ordered already WILL get their singles - I got up this morning to burn the screen so I should be able to send those off by the weekend.
I've only got enough to fill the orders already placed, but I'll be doing a small re-press in a few weeks as well.
Thanks to Scott for cluing me in to the swirling anger surrounding this release.
Matt
