Non-Music Shit / Re: The Orbit Turntable
« on: May 17, 2017, 12:30:29 PM »
Why not just a second-hand turntable from a reputable 70s/80s maker?  Surely cheaper and better than this?

Vintage electronics have their own set of headaches in my experience. Maybe not if you're buying from a place that refurbishes and offers some kind of warranty, but then it stops being cheaper.

I've had mine for about a year and I think I have still yet to once successfully switch it from 45 to 33 without the belt falling off.

I noticed they include a PDF of this if you buy a download of the album from The Ex bandcamp page. My vinyl copy has no inserts. Anyone holding?

Cities / Re: St. Louis to Louiville?

It's off the interstate a bit, but there's a full scale replica gallows outside the Benton, IL courthouse that is supposed to "commemorate" the last public hanging in Illinois or something. There's some other random quasi-historical junk next to it, an old-timey gangster car and a tank or artillery piece or something. I think the building has some kind of jailhouse museum in it too but I didn't go in.

I'm likely in the minority with this, but "Understand" is probably my favorite of the bunch in retrospect.

I've probably listened to Understand? more than any other record ever. I remember feeling like I won the lottery when I came across their whole discography on cassette at some used book store in high school after having literally worn out the copy of Understand? that was a hand-me-down from my older brother. Living in pre-internet suburbia I didn't know anything about the band and wasn't even sure they had other albums.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Bukowski/D. Boone cemetery

Went there a couple years ago on tour and the funeral director guy immediately come over to our jalopy tour van full of smelly hungover punks and asked us if we were looking for Bukowski. Then he not only showed us to his grave but drank a beer with us too. He didn't know who D. Boon was though so I guess he wasn't that cool.

A second hand story told to me by a woman at a bar: She picks up some dude and goes back to his house. In his room he shows her a baby raccoon that he found abandoned in his yard and has housed in a cardboard box while he attempts to raise it himself or some shit. Fast forward to the middle of the night and she wakes up to the guy standing over the cardboard box pissing all over the baby raccoon.

Music Shit / Re: Is DEATH worth seeing live today?

I thought they were pretty good the first time around but then I saw them again last year and thought it was just okay. I don't remember any reggae stuff, but they played some new stuff that was trying to emulate the old material and it was mediocre at best. Apparently the non-original member is the one writing it. They probably should have just done the initial string of reunion shows and then hung it up.
