Are you talking about me?!  I'm not saying that at all; I'm just saying that the English language does have certain standards in a formal, written context.  Obviously I am also biased towards CMS, as a student at the school that publishes it.

There are competing "guides" written by other flawed human beings
I mean, we're talking about the OED and CMS here.  This isn't just some guy deciding what he thinks is right or wrong and publishing it as a guide.  This is years and years devoted to determining what is and isn't grammatically correct.

and it's a fluid language. Some things simply make sense to the eye/ear.
Well, sure.  People can write it however they want.  But if they are concerned with it being technically grammatically correct, as I would assume New York Times writers are, then there are certain standards that they are expected to follow, including this one.

Williams's is WRONG.
Even if you think it doesn't sound right, it is definitely not "wrong."

Go with Oxford English; everyone else is dipshits.

http://www.askoxford.com/betterwriting/classicerrors/grammartips/possessives?view=get

    * To form a possessive from a singular noun, add an apostrophe followed by s: 'the girl's book'.
    * Add an apostrophe to plurals ending in s, e. g. 'the girls' books'.
    * If a plural noun does not end in s, add an apostrophe followed by s: 'the children's toys'.
    * Also add an apostrophe to a name ending in -es that is pronounced like the word is: 'Moses' mother'.

Except "Williams" isn't pronounced like the word "is," so that doesn't apply in this sentence.

According to NYT Style Guide the answer would be A but Chicago Manual of Style would point to B.

But would you say:

a) Nathan Williams's starter Flock of Seagulls haircut was silly with sweat

or

b) Nathan Williams' starter Flock of Seagulls haircut was silly with sweat

No.  In fact, the actual CMS, which I can't link to because it is for subscribers only, gives the example of "Williams's reputation" as correct in section 7.18.

I mean, people are going to understand you either way.  But grammatically, a is correct.

Dude, I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.  If you want to go, call or e-mail me.  (Don't text, because I can't get them.)

Kyle: if I come to your birthday party, I should probably act equivalently to how you were at mine, right?  That makes sense?

Troy: if you do decide to go and have extra room, let me know, and maybe I will take a break from writing the Great American Epic Poem.

I share this conversation (as it was related to me) not to hate on Puking Pearls at all, but because I find it really amusing:

Puking Pearls Singer (presumably in a flirtatious manner): Hey, our bands should totally play together more often.
Officer Brad: Yeah.  What's your band name again?
PPS: Puking Pearls.
Officer Brad: Puking Girls?
PPS: No, Puking PEARLS.
Officer Brad: Puking HURLS?
PPS: No!  Puking Pearls! (Moves on to Sean.)

Uhh I don't think my last post came across clearly because I meant I would drive somebody else's vehicle.  I don't have a car, are you kidding me?!  Anyway I actually have other plans on Saturday anyway.

Paul's spiel in the middle of one of the songs about when the Nerves played Chicago where he was naming off old clubs that haven't existed in over a decade.  And he kept saying "do you remember that" and everyone under the age of 40 was looking puzzled.  He even name dropped Cary Baker.

Oh yeah that was hilarious.  "Do you remember that?"  NO!

If people are going from Chicago I would very much like to get in on that.  Will stay sober and drive and everything.

yang is a common hmong name so thats understandable because wang is very similar.

Sure, but there are only 18 Hmong surnames, so it's pretty easy to tell if someone is Hmong or not just by the last name.  There were probably 100 kids at my high school with the last name Yang (and just as many Vangs), but only one Wang.

Yeah, I think that it's just that in small Wisconsin towns, the Hmong population completely dwarfs any other Asian community, so other people just assume any Asian person living in that town is Hmong.  And most of the time they probably assume correctly.  One of my best friends from home is Chinese, and people would assume she was Hmong all the time, in spite of the fact that she doesn't look at all Hmong, her last name is Wang, etc.  (This was not in Manitowoc.)

Music Shit / Re: Alex Chilton

any opinions on the following?

Alex Chilton - Alex Chilton (1992)
I have no idea what this is or what's on here, but if it's from 1992 it's probably not all that good.
Alex Chilton - Black List (1990)
Kind of interesting if you find it for cheap, contains an bizarre version of "Take Me Home And Make Me Like It" (which is on Bach's Bottom), and some covers that I like ("Little GTO," etc.)
Alex Chilton - Clich?s + Loose Shoes and Tight Pussy (2004)
Not really worth it.
Alex Chilton - High Priest (1988)
Mostly pretty boring, I do like his version of "Let Me Get Close To You," but it is a pretty straightforward cover.
Alex Chilton - Live In London (1980)
Great!  I think there is a double LP which pairs this with Like Flies and it totally makes sense.  It's, you know, live, and it's sloppy and drunk and I really like it.
Alex Chilton - No Sex EP (1986)
Title track has already been mentioned here as being pretty good, the other two tracks are not so much.

There are a ton of live bootlegs (like the Teenage Fanclub one and the KUT radio set that have been mentioned) floating around, and all of them that I've heard have been at least pretty good.

I am gonna go over to the Yolks in Milwaukee thread and complain about how they're playing there twice soon but somehow can never make it all the way down to the south side of the city they live in...boo hoo.
