that spray paint lp stinks. really weak sounding, lazy and rushed. already got rid of it. disappointing since i liked the 7"s

Did you listen to it more than once? I had similar (though not as strong) thoughts on my first listen, but now I think it's just as good as the 7"s. Hearing it on vinyl also helps, and I would like to rescind part of the review that I wrote, but that's the risk of doing print reviews based on mp3s I guess.

It's weird that Tony Bennett (NBA player, head coach at Wash St./Virginia/etc.) also grew up there during the same time, both of them were I think in the same class at SPASH. Literally everyone I ever talked to hated Tony and liked Suzy, though.

I've literally never heard this, you sure?  Usually people are all about incessantly mentioning any local quasi-celebrities.

Related: my dad went to school with Kathy Kinney!

I was in Point for the holidays when this came out.  It is a VERY big deal there in the sense that eeeeeverybody is talking about it, but I did not hear anybody say anything negative about her at all.  She is like the Stevens Point hero or whatever, plus yeah everybody already knew she has "issues," so everybody was shocked but simultaneously just kind of like "eh, good for her," which is cool.  Point is pretty ok sometimes.

Music Shit / Re: What was your favorite Burger release of 2012?
« on: December 23, 2012, 10:54:58 AM »
The best thing I heard this year that was released on Burger -- possible the best thing I heard released on any label -- was the song "Loving Knife" by the unfortunately-named Magic Jake and the Power Crystals: http://burgerrecords.bandcamp.com/track/loving-knife

The WORST thing I heard this year that was released on Burger, or any label, was the Summer Twins LP.  Why does that exist?  I'm still half-convinced it's a joke.

My strongest memory of Burger Records this year is at SXSW when one of those dudes offered me a pin and I declined and he got really sad and I ended up taking it because I felt so bad. :'(

I used to not care much for Jackie O's posts, but I have been pretty into them lately.

What a coincidence!  Wuthering Heights is the worst book I've ever read!

I don't understand the nature of this class.  Is the "classic" supposed to be a book you've already read, or not?  And how long does the class have to read this book?  A lot of these suggestions are not feasible within the timeframe of, say, a week.

Fuck, I don't care if people like reviews and they write them and they read them, but quit pretending that they fill any valid space at this point, it's absolutely untrue.

I'm not sure I'm interpreting "fill any valid space" correctly, but I will say this: ideally -- certainly not always in reality -- someone who writes a review is going to feel a certain sense of responsibility, and put a certain amount of effort into actually articulating his thoughts on the record, much more so than someone who's posting something on the internet on his 15-minute break from work.  Obviously, this isn't true for a huge amount of garbage blog writers or whatever.  But I value a well-thought-out review on Termbo more than 10 people posting in the What Are You Listening To thread who are just saying "this record roolz!" or whatever.  Those posts have their value too, but it's not as important to me.  Reviews may not matter to you and that's perfectly fine, but I do think they serve a function that is different from message boards or what have you.  For me, and I would assume for others as well, reviews do matter and do have a real, significant impact on my purchases.

Rubberneck is doing reviews as of their latest issue. It's a really well done rock'n'roll photo mag.

Thanks for mentioning us.  We have two issues with reviews now.  I would really like it if more people who put out interesting records would mail things to us.  We do have a circulation of 300, and obviously way more people read it without buying it.  Anyone is welcome to send records to

Rubberneck HQ
605 Theresa Ave
Austin, TX 78703

The deadline for the next issue is early January, so the sooner you get it to us, the better.  On the other hand, I will warn everyone that 1.) We only have a page in each issue for reviews, so only the 6-7 most interesting (good or bad) things we get every few months make it in, and 2.) It's just me doing these reviews and I'm some 25-year-old who's never written reviews before.  BUT I'M TRYING!

What's the point of taking subprime if you're actively attempting to circumvent it though?

Yeah, I mean, I dunno.  I'm not asking for myself, I just want to make sure somebody else is being safe.  Personally, Tramadol does almost nothing for pain for me either, it just makes me super-sleepy and queasy.  Thanks for the info though!

Hey as long as we are talking about prescription drugs and whatnot, anybody know if it's cool to take Tramadol with Suboxone?

Oh yeah, and: if I were trying to get clean/sober I'm sure I would have a major problem with the god aspect of things, but the people I know who go to meetings are generally clean, and the people I know who refuse to go to meetings are usually more like "clean."

I do think that it sounds like the problem is not so much your location as a shift in your lifestyle.  It seems like this is something that happens to most people at some point, it just happened to you earlier than most.  You know, if your problem is that you just don't know people who enjoy the same things you do at this point, moving to another city is probably going to make that harder, not easier.  Have you thought about book clubs?  What about your kid -- do you meet other parents?  Surely some of them must be at least slightly interesting?

I don't drink all that much and I never really have (though I do get pretty drunk maybe once a month), but I don't have a problem hanging out with people who do.  It seems like it's harder to transition if you used to drink a lot and then stopped, as opposed to never doing it all that much.  On the other hand, if I lived in my hometown, a small college town where the social scene revolves around drinking to the exclusion of all else, it would probably be tougher.  Buuuut I just looked up Lafayette and it's well over twice the size of my hometown.

I don't know that I completely buy the idea of addiction as a "disease" in the traditional sense, but it obviously goes beyond a "choice."  Something doesn't have to be a literal DISEASE for it to be a serious condition.  I keep meaning to go to Al-Anon (ok actually other people keep trying to get me to go), but it is honestly so inconvenient to my schedule.  Also I feel like the other people there will look down on me for my problems not being serious enough?  Actually I should go to a Nar-Anon meeting but there are none in this city, what the fuck Nar-Anon, this is a major city with some major fucking junkies in it, you really think it's more important to have a meeting in fucking Amarillo?

I wrote this while kinda buzzed so feel free to disregard all of it.

If you are looking for someplace "nice" or whatever, go to Haddington's.  I recommend this only because my friend Jon is a waiter there and he loves Sing Sing.  I cannot vouch for the food.
