if you like drinking (nice), check out de kline du vel or w c harlans. if you like drinking (cheap), check out mt. royal tavern or club charles. if you like drinking (hip) check out johnny rads or rocket to venus. if you dont like drinking, uh, go duckpin bowling?

johnny rads and iggies both have tight pizza. Go JRs if you need a non-dairy option or wanna play skee ball. two boots is also good but theres nowhere to really dine in.

Thanks Dana! By tradition, JR's is our "welcome to town" lunch and I can't wait to drop in again this weekend. Will try to check out one of your drink recommendations...very handy. I didn't know they had Duckpin bowling outside of Mass/CT!

@davehyde your welcome to sit in on sick thoughts practice at barclay while we jerk each othe r off on 1/18

Will be trolling Hampden on Sunday. Turn your practice into a Celebrated Summer in store!

Any shows happening in Baltimore during the weekend Jan 17-19? Or interesting movie screenings/art exhibits/etc?

Any new/noteworthy/under the radar shops (record/book/antique) or restaurants (veggie options/pizza/etc) that I might not know having not been to B-more in about a year?

Otherwise it'd probably be some rave or that Old Barn Fest where people stole and blew up a car and the cops came and were scared of all of us. I smoked a joint right in front of a cop silently daring him to say something and then find himself torn limb from limb by the three thousand train hopping crust punks that were there.

Actually, Old Barn Fest is one of the most important shows for me, too. Trekking across the country for the first time. In retrospect, our trip was so poorly planned it's funny, we had little money and no credit cards, no cell phones, etc etc but somehow pulled it off. Car broke down in DuBois, PA where I was threatened by a local for allegedly photographing their car as it drove by (they saw me push the button?). Broke down again in Indiana with what proved to be a cheap fix but caused a huge scare when we found our trunk on fire(!). We exhausted all of our cash to fix the car, made it to Old Barn, met up with friends, saw a million bands and some crusties burn a car, then headed home. It was great.

This was amazing. Driving to Jim Falls from Minneapolis in a caravan of fucked up crusties in topless Jeeps. Definitely one to remember.

Thanks for posting this. Great to go through the photos. I found a pretty sweet shot of my back looking out of place with no spikes/punk jacket. Funny now to see so many folks I know in these photos who I had not yet met at the time.

The Friendly Toast!

It's been a while, but the last time I was there I only recall two record stores, Bull Moose and some smaller punk store on Fleet st. Yelp notes another record store on Congress - Skeletone - and I wonder if that's not the punk one I went to at a different location. Pierce Island/Four Tree Island was a cool spot to hang - overlooks the city and has many groundhogs bandying about.

Kittery, NH has some cool oceanfront spots that we always try to visit when in town. Also, Mrs. Frisbee was a little local deli that made their own root beer. Not sure if they're still around but it was awesome.

Dead Nation/Kill the Man Who Questions/No Justice/Gordon Solie Motherfuckers @ Speak In Tongues, Clevo, Easter Sunday 2000.

Just googled this show to see what other people remembered and found a message board thread where someone quoted a review of the show that I wrote (although I can't remember where I wrote it, I still back it). Anyway, this sums it up.

Quote
Clevo Easter show in 2000 or 2001.  It was the day after the Chicago Fest and on the way home...the band I drove out with played the show.  Lineup was Dead Nation, KTMWQ, No Justice, and Gordon Solie Motherfuckers.  The show was a mindfuck to all of us who weren't from Clevo...even though we were all fans of GSMF and most had seen the band before, no one knew what to expect.  It was absolutely nuts: fireworks, flying tires & cinder blocks, wrestling onto cars in front of the club (my pal Ian got his windshield smashed as a result)...Tony naked, bleeding, punching himself screaming, "There's something wrong with me...I'm mentally ill!"  Oh yeah, GSMF played one of the best sets I've ever seen.

B/W

DSB at ABC No Rio, 11/22/2003.

My memory is that ABC was so completely packed, DSB played their set standing on chairs using a megaphone to deliver the vocals. The set was pure energy, one of the best things I've ever seen. There's a DVD with clips of the show but I haven't seen it. A lot of other sentimental factors tie in to my memory of this show: this was DSB's 2nd US tour of the year and I had seen all of the previous west coast shows, having a ton of fun meeting the band, etc//I started dating my girlfriend this day, at/after the show, we have a poster for the show hanging in our apartment still//DSB at ABC no Rio was sort of a dream come true- a friend and I had been huge fans of their single years earlier and joked about it how great it would be to see them in NY one day, knowing full well that it would never happen. Fast forward and it did happen and we were just in heaven//etc. All combined (live show + sentimentality) makes this tops.

Book looks so sick. So psyched that this is finally available.

Watery Love/Counter Intuits @ Johnny Brenda's, Philly
Pharmakon/Hank Wood/Dawn of Humans @ MoMA PS1, Queens This was a free show at a prestigious art museum, which is just insane
Watery Love/Mordecai @ Union Pool, Bklyn
Dawn of Humans @ Tromadance, Bklyn Good werido vibe at this show which was a Troma fest after party. Horrible opening bands & creepy middle aged Troma fans - one turned to me during the show and grumbled, "where were these people all weekend, they missed the movies!". Not a tightly run show, which was a bummer since I could've spent another couple of hours at DCM before DoH played but worthy of inclusion due to a great DoH set and memorable atmosphere.
Medication/Civil Union/Estrogen Highs @ Cafe 9, New Haven I got the impression Civil Union's US tour was under attended which is a shame. They blew me away both times I saw them.
Pura Mania/Generacion Suicida @ Acheron, Bklyn So excited to finally see GS, just a perfect band.
The Clean @ Glasslands, Bklyn
Tercer Mundo @ Don Pedro, Bklyn Last second show after cops shut down the venue the night before. ACAB
La Misma/Hank Wood/Una Bestia Incontrolable/Dawn of Humans @ 538, Bklyn
Crazy Spirit/Lowest Form/Hank Wood @ Acheron, Bklyn Got to see an old friend play his first show in the US. Bonus: Crippled Spirit shredded, casts & crutches included
Dischaka/Drunken Rampage/Survival/Blazing Eye/Hank Wood/Dawn of Humans @ Tompkins Square Park, NYC Perfect show. Homeless dudes bragging to the C-Squat folks, "I've seen more of these shows than you". Psyched middle aged dude in a suit filmed a good chunk of the show. Little kids, bikes, ABC No Rio old-timers, and house paint all made appearances.
