Non-Music Shit / Re: Media mail
« on: October 24, 2014, 12:10:57 PM »
Even if "educational materials" was the original intent of MM they certainly have widespread precident of not giving a hoot what the content of the packages were. I just looked and noticed two different definitions on the USPS website, one that mentioned educational materials one that does not. I wonder if they're trying to slowly redefine what the product is used for or if you just landed a maverick holding tight to an old world view?

Music Shit / Re: Top bands from Japan

BRAIN GENOCIDE/PPSH Split 7 inch

One man band from Brooklyn (both bands are the same). I guess he was Japanese but this was a Brooklyn record all the way (member of Distraught at the time!).

Also, this is the best record in the history of the world (or at least the second best).

Sleep "Dopesmoker" - This album has been around me for over a decade, always somewhat mystical and surrounded by crazed lore. The budget, used to buy weed and gear; the writing process, band locked away for years honing the final product; the recording, recorded on tape, the length of the final product exceeded the maximum length of tape available so some wizardry had to be done; the label, astonished by the final product refused to release the album. Despite the great stories and spending some time in the intervening years with "Holy Mountain" and High on Fire, I never went all in on "Dopesmoker" until this summer. And I find it mesmerizing, a 60+ minute song, that is nuanced and interesting throughout. It works as an attentive listener, it works to help pull you into a zone of concentration. A lovely album. (I have this only as an MP3, and am on the fence w/r/t tracking down a vinyl copy. Does it still work with the flips? Or does it need to be experienced without seams?)

Flesh Eaters 7" + LPs - On a kick yesterday and listened through the Flesheaters catalog, which is as good a run as any. "A Minute to Pray" is the personal fave at the moment, but they're all legendary for a reason.

V-3 "Launchpad Explosion" - Settled down on the train yesterday with this on repeat and a printout of Nudge's "My Hands Don't Sleep" (avail on the web) in hand. A nice immersion into the greatest scene that ever was.

Effectively Wild - The Baseball Prospectus podcast. Among the first things I listen to every morning. Like coffee, vitamins, and something doughy, this is the start to a well-balanced day.

Great list, compeltely agreed - esp on Bastard and Death Side. Monstrous slabs. I'd add Czarzly, and second Smash Hits and Satan...

Should've put Czarzly on my list, too...listened to it this week even, but don't think I ever heard it until early '00s. (Doesn't change anything, just, ...)
And, who am I kidding, "Ideas Are Bulletproof" might've been the most important record to me at the time.

The answer is Blood Guts and Pussy.

I feel like this was SO important for people just a little bit older than me, but I totally missed out. Like, literally, I've never heard it (unless it was playing at a venue and I didn't know it). Not only that, but I feel like, as groundbreaking as it was in '90, it was passe by the time I got into punk ('94ish). Kind of wondering if I should go back and give it a shot but feeling like if I did it'd just feel dated.

If "Wind of Pain" doesn't qualify as an album then my vote is with Armia's "Legenda"album which is equally unparalleled.

Following that monster pair, I'll cast second place votes for TJSA "Bait & Switched", Deathside "Bet on the Possibility", Ego Summit,  "Evil Love Deeper", "Reject All American", Supercharger "S/T", Rip Offs "S/T" followed closely, along with a million other records, including: HHIG "Plot Sickens" (if it counts), Disclose "Tragedy", J. Lizard "Liar", Mummies (do any of these qualify?), "Ill Communication", "Destroy Oh Boy", Donnas "s.t",  Born Against "9 Hymns", "Grown Up, Fucked Up"...  ("Zen & Art of Beating Your Ass" was totally formative but probably not much of an album for these purposes).

I should probably revisit "Mush", Aus Rotten, and some others.

Sabermatrician that I am (ha!), going about this somewhat scientifically, I was looking at Discogs: LPs from the 90s sorted by "Most Wanted" and noticed some surprisingly high rated bonehead albums (Public Enemy, for instance). As a youngster, I'd always seen value in the line of elders: "I've never listened to [Skrewdriver] because I'm afraid that when I do I'll find that they were the best." NOT THE CASE at least with Public Enemy and some others that I sampled. (This stuff is legitimately as limp as Lifetime or Vorhees).

Night one was filled with a bunch of brooklyn bands that like computers and pedals.  Not my bag, and most of them didn't understand the value of economical set times.

Nandas played. Short set, no electronics, total punk, killer band. Agreed on other two bands, though, and overall point of Una Bestia ruling.
