AXEMEN Press: "The Axemen started in Christchurch in 1981, a time when New Zealand and Flying Nun records in particular were stirring up a major musical waves (ones that were felt in countless 1990's US indie bands and are still being felt today especially disciples like TNV), yet the sweeping, strummy pop element that was evident in many of the Nun's stable was only a part of the fuzzy picture that was the Axemen. The band's central core of (Little) Stevie McCabe, Bob Brannigan, and Stu Kawowski recorded in both cheapo home mode and in traditional studios, but setting had little to do with the wide-swing of directions that are evident wherever you drop a needle (or cue up a tape). There's tons of basement weirdness nodding to the more antisocial Velvets and Swell Maps moments, scatterings of drunken White Album recreation attempts, even moments where they sound like Royal Trux way before their time. When they played at Union Pool in Brooklyn last week I could swear they were going for a Stackwaddy/Doors thing, but then they became Half Japanese with Stevie playing sax solos on guitar. In Axemen recordings, they have one song about Elmer Fudd that sounds like Psychic TV, and another that is totally inspired by Grandmaster Flash. They even did a full album of Elton John songs. I have a feeling that if Flying Nun gave them the giant studio budget like they did Straitjacket Fits they would have come up with an album just as great as their Big Cheap Motel and Scary! Part III cassettes that Siltbreeze thankfully reissued in 2009." - Brian Turner/WMFU

"Originally seeing the light of day on the Flying Nun label in 1985, 3V?s ('Three Virgins' 2xLP) is a broad canvas of sound, seemingly channeling other likeminded cornerstones of fringe rumble such as ?Trout Mask Replica?, ?Exile On Main Stree?t & ?Tago Mago?." - Siltblog

"Normally, when people use the phrase ?a musician?s musician,? it?s meant to describe some Les Claypool nightmare whose dexterity and technical skill can only be properly appreciated by people who have also dedicated themselves to a life of fretless guitars and sweep arpeggios. That being said: When New Zealand?s Axemen want to be, they?re musicians? musicians. It takes some effort to crack the self-serving exterior of their approach (getting drunk, recording off-the-cuff songs with whoever was hanging around, and releasing as much of it as humanly possible) but, as anyone who?s ever tried this approach themselves can attest, it?s completely intoxicating as long as you don?t muck it up by throwing in any pretensions of sophistication. By making their methods obvious and leaving very little to the imagination, Axemen have created a bunch of music that perfectly encapsulates the feeling of fucking around creatively with your friends. NGL012: LOW LIFE 'Sydney Darbs' 7"
Debut 7" from Sydney's Low Life, following a self titled cassette tape that manged to joins the dots from No Trend to Box of Fish, and turn the heads of several punters. Bassist Finn Parker was living in Brisbane at the time of release, bringing an armful of tapes w/ him, and indicated a 7" was to follow. Shortly after he returned to Sydney I said I'd do the seven if they met w/ the stipulation that it be titled "Sydney Darbs" (a reference to chicken fried suburbia), the band agreed, and a record was born. Here Low Life take on a more direct approach to punk than the cassette's brooding, bad vibes, recalling the early Aberrant bands and other antipodean purveyors of distress & distaste. You might even hear traces of Cosmic Psychos, if filtered through the brainplay of the Missing Foundation. Great lyrics by Mitch Tolman punctuate the tunes w/ a sense of personality missing in many of their contemporaries. Artwork by Sean Bailey (Lakes, Tax) and mastered for vinyl by Steven Smith.

Check out opening cut and artwork here: http://lowlifesydney.bandcamp.com/

NGL019: DEGREASER 'Bottom Feeder' LP
I was late to arrive on the alternating Sea Scouts and Bird Blobs trams, but was well aware that many peers and elders held those groups in high esteem. While the DeGreaser record may contain whiffs of the fog the Scouts/Blobs left in their wake, this is a beast in and of itself; enlivened by splashes of chrome strippin' black-hole psych and No Wave malice. You might hear bits & pieces from principal songwriter Tim Evan's other bands over the years, among them Bogan Dust and more recently, Coconuts. Facts bein' facts though, you could just as well do w/out hearing any of what's come before from Tim & co and still get a kick out of DeGreaser and their debut long-player 'Bottom Feeder'. Here are nine tracks that will make you hit the wall or nosedive onto gravel. A pitch-perfect addition to our ever growing roster of gnarled eerie sounds; DeGreaser are a destruction unit of the highest caliber, worth yer chump change no matter what time you happened to tune in. Mastered by Steven Smith.

Download opening tune "On the Throne" here: http://www.mediafire.com/?jo1sqfwcw9kyn2d

NGL020: THE LOST DOMAIN 'Blondes Chew More Gum' 2xLP
NGL's 20th release is one we could hardly be more humbled by. Originally recorded in 1995 and seeing vinyl here for the first time- as it were always intended- 'Blondes...' is arguably the Lost Domain's first masterpiece and surely represents the group's creative zenith. The record might appeal to fans of Jandek or the People With Chairs Up their Noses, not specifically in sound, but in the skewered approach and unhinged intent. Three drummers forge a tribal, "free" landscape, grounded by Simon Ellaby's (AKA Ragtime Frank) vocals and the virtuous guitar work of Papa Lord God & spiritual group leader Dave MacKinnon. What results is one of the finest rock'n'roll records ever cut in Brisbane, Australia, and we are honored to be a part of Dave and the Lost Domain's redemption. 2 LP's housed in deluxe full color gatefold sleeve. Production by John Henry Calvinist (Dave MacKinnon)

A trio of great traditional rock 'n' roll 7"s, following forays into outsider rock (Wonderuls - s/t7") and amphetamine roll (Hatefuck 'R'n'r Let Down'). A Low Life EP was intended to be part of this bunch, but the press presses were rejected and the record has now been rescheduled for a September release. Look for the video of hit single "Down Under" shortly. Look for price & ordering details below.

I don't have my copies yet, but the Eagle Boys 7" is out now and available to buy at Goner now and more shortly. This band existed for a year or two in London, made up of a few Western Australians, and maybe a Serb and a Maltese. Most members now play in Tough Troubles. They played few shows to few people, and never performed covers.
