Noise - Not only is it really hit & miss, but I totally agree with Acapulco in that there's not a really good resource for it. I want to own more of it, but I'm always really hesitant to buy a lot of it because I'm afraid of getting burned. Most noise reviews, or the little blurbs in catalogs, don't tell me at all what the record sounds like, and instead favor pretensious rambling ("This latest cassette release from Inverted Anus, limited to 10 copies, is a car lost in a snow storm with only one headlight, never really sure if it's in the right lane. The snow gets perpetually thicker until disorientation completely takes over. etc.") Fuck that. What does it sound like? I mean yeah, it is really hard to ascribe tangible qualities to something so abstract, but at least give me a clue here.
My buddy Drew does a decent blog with reviews of a lot of noise/drone/experimental stuff. He is a little gushing about most of it, but I think he does a decent job of actually describing what the music sounds like - seems hard to do with most of this stuff, so I'm glad he tries. Check it out:
