Music Shit / Re: Dollar Bin Classics:The Matt Pinfield Years
« on: May 07, 2008, 09:18:31 AM »
I'll stand by that first Cell single and some of the first album is ok too.
Gumball were not from Minnesota or Wisconson.  Don Fleming lived in the NYC area, Jay lived in Harrisburg PA and Eric Vermillion lived in Pittsburgh (but was originally from the Harrisburg area).  The records aren't all great, but I think they have moments on them that are great, and they aren't all that different from the Velvet Monkeys.
St. Johnny's full length records suck, but I stand by the singles. Once Mr. Luxurious Bags, Tom Leonard, left the band I could care less though.

Music Shit / Re: Iran (the SF band)

I haven't seen Aaron in almost a year or so, but last time I did see him he said that there were like two or three Iran records about to come out, but so far I don't think any of them have.  If I remember correctly he was talking about turning it into a "real" band w/shows and tours etc and there were a bunch of labels interested in putting the stuff out (TV on the Radio in full effect). He also said the film was close to finished too.  But like I said that was about a year ago.

Mike I sort of just assumed that you were up to date on the Cause Co-motion records otherwise I'd would have been telling you how good I think they are.  They are pretty great live too, tons of nervous energy vibes w/everything played a bit too fast.  They've got a bunch of mp3's on their website and a couple of them are live and are really great.

I really like the Crystal Stilts 12" a lot.

Vivian Girls 7" is one of my favorites of the last year or two or three. Yeah, I really like it. I heard a CDR of the LP that's out in 2 weeks. Same.

I feel like a dope for never listening to the Causeco records, as they're always here in the shop. We all make mistakes.

That being said, this is the kind of stuff I most want to hear these days. Funny they're all here in NY.

I feel like Christmas Island almost fit in with this sonofabitch.

Buffalo:  First three records all hit the spot.  Fantasticly dumb!
Blues Creation "Demon & Eleven Children" Pretty much perfect
High Tide
Flower Travellin Band
There's a comp called "Downer Rock Genocide" that does, in fact, live up to its name.

Always more

Vinnie/SteveBeat

Does WRCT have any good DJ's?  Although I haven't listened to it in years I still consider it one of the best stations in the country.

Has anyone mentioned that "Earthworms" is only on the CD and not the LP?  No big deal if you have the 7", but worth noting I guess.  Also, my copy played w/out surface noise, but it skips during "Lights Down Low."  There seems to be something in the grooves, but with the clear vinyl it is hard to see it.  I'll clean it when I get home and see if I can get it fixed.

Hey,
sorry about that, there were lots of different folks packing the orders and it was hard to police the packing of all of them.  Why don't you e-mail me at dave at matadordirect dot com and I'll see what I can do about getting you a new sleeve or something.

Yeah, I'm sure WARNER (who owns Flying Nun) will be super easy to do business with!
I'm sure it might be different in every case, but a lot of the rights to that flying nun stuff are starting to expire.  Word is that the two FN Dead C records are gonna be put out later this year by Ba Da Bing.  Like I said, I imagine that the specific deals might vary, but that could mean that a lot of great records could find new homes.

wasn't until the second nuggets box that i learned "save my soul" wasn't a lime spiders original.  wimple winch's version is weak in comparison.
Uh, you're wrong.  Although I love the Lime Spiders version, the Wimple Winch version is better and I'd logged many, many listens to the Lime Spiders version before I'd ever came across the original.

I had awkward drunken sex in Fat Mike's hotel room once.
David Cross was there.
PM me for details.
So did you have awkward, drunken sex with Fat Mike or David Cross or both?  I haven't heard one of their records in almost 20 years, but I saw NOFX numerous times as a kid and for better or worse "Bob Durkee's a Dick" is now stuck in my head.

Music Shit / Re: siltbreeze feature on pitchfork
« on: February 22, 2008, 11:23:01 AM »
pitchfork just reviewed the Norton "I Hate CDs" 3xcd comp... gave it a glowing review...read like a 10.0... but only a 7.9.. what the fuck is the point?

after they cross-referenced it with "Windows Cool Points", their proprietary computer program, they realized they couldn't break into the 8's and maintain cool accuracy.

Exactly.  Since, as I've mentioned before, the numerical review number doesn't come from the writer, but from the editorial staff  and they can't really give something like the Norton comp a higher rating than whatever record they just gave "best new music" to.  It would cause a seismic shift in their priorities and most likely alienate their core readers.  So, as much as the reviewer might want the number to be 10.0 it's almost never going to happen.  I'm not sure there is a point though.

This place is the most useless record store on earth.  It's in the North Hills here in Pittsburgh.  Dude is a prick from what I'm told.  I've never been inside there because you're not actually allowed to look through any of these records.  Dude will only sell things at book value, which he looks up, and if he has less than two mint copies, he won't sell you the record but will offer to make you a tape or CDR for $25.

It's actually a lot worse than Steve makes it sound.  At one point he claimed to own "every record ever pressed."  He's always been a total, no fun ass who's been able to suck the life out of any record you may have wanted to buy from him.

Very sad.  Jim was a super nice guy.  I remember at a Sun Ra show in Erie, PA Jim and I were the only ones who bought the Sun Ra trucker styled baseball cap (big white foam w/a picture of Sun Ra on it and maroon mesh.)
