Music Shit / Re: Picture Discs
« on: August 29, 2016, 08:13:49 AM »
Worst format.  If you want to look at a picture, that is what the record cover is for.

Still have the Lazy Cowgirls, it is in box somewhere.  Can't remember when I got it or if I paid for it.

Also have the Angel Dust comp.  Interesting enough idea for a series of records and at least they had lot of art besides the actual picture discs.  Looks like the Robert Williams one is the most sought after, I would have assumed it would be the Pettibon one.

While I love the Melvins I sold that triple LP set when I realized how much money it was worth because they were picture discs (and fucking stupid ones at that.)

I also have a Pooh Sticks 7" picture disc because I love the Pooh Sticks and because it isn't worth anything so why get rid of it?

Music Shit / Re: Punk/Hardcore bands that use trumpet or sax?

I keep thinking there is an old Dangerhouse 45 that uses sax, but I can't remember. Could totally be wrong and cannot place it.

Deadbeats.  Already mentioned.

Saw a copy at Landlocked last week.  Jason posts here.

Just saw this, probably too late but Cruel Noise is now open in the old Mind Cure spot. Pretty similar vibe. Great store.

I wouldn't say I was underwhelmed, but it would be a stretch to say that I was blown away.  Instagram did steal the thunder of some of the stuff like the report cards, but overall I am happy that I saw it.  It wasn't too crowded when I was there and the crowd was pretty diverse.  Thankfully I didn't overhear anything too absurd.

Meet Your Death LP
Great goddamn record.  "Hits hard", as my bud said.  Gotta love 12xu for the timing too:  this one, Musk + Manhunt all at once?  All great / too much.

Super obsessed with this record as well.  So ridiculously simple and so ridiculously good.

Got mine today, very happy about it.

Can't remember the name, but pretty sure a new store opened a year or two ago. Other than ordering new indie records I have no idea what else they might have. The creamery should not be missed.

Lots of interesting sight seeing too. The inclines: totally fun and cool (unless you are terrified of heights.)
The Warhol museum is cool. PNC park is a great place to see a baseball game.  All that sort of shit.

Jerry's.  Though the legend means that some folks leave disappointed it it always worth a trip.  (Squirrel Hill)

Mind Cure Records* will be no more by this point I think and I don't think the new store (spacing on the name) will be open yet, but the book store, Copacetic Comics Company on the third floor of the building is amazing.  Store Owner Bill Boichel has done more to further art and culture than almost any other Pittsburgher I can think of.. (Polish Hill)

Sound Cat - Pretty solid indie store.  Some used records (Bloomfield)
Eides - Punk, Metal and rock.  comics too.  Bad Vibes abound because Greg Eide is a dick who treats everyone like shit.  Possible to find good stuff there though. (Downtown - Near the bus station)
The Attic - Good used store with some new stuff too. All genres.  Pricing can be iffy (Millvale)
Desolation Row (Inside Calaban books)  Way more records than I remember, Mostly new.  Could be worth a look (Oakland)
*Mind Cure will most likely re-open in a new location later this year and will focus almost entirely on used records.

Haven't lived there in ages so my food recommendations might be a bit backdated.  If you don't eat meat then ignore this
Tessarro's Great burgers, steaks etc.  (Bloomfield)
Primanti bros.  some say gimmick, but it is greasy and really good.  I couldn't imagine eating this without alcohol being involved though. (Tons of locations, but the one in the strip district is the original)

That Sleeping Beauties record is great! It's been on constant rotation around here since it came out. I don't get any black lips vibes whatsoever. Black Lips wish they could make records like this. It's like some damaged mirrors/vu stuff channeled through guys who have accepted the mess they've made of their lives and can only laugh. but hey, what do i know.

not sure why people would flip for that Hunches demo LP and not see what a gem this is.
Total agreement. The 'Damaged' aspect is what makes so many of my fave records what they are. It's why I don't - can't - exclusively (or even mainly) listen to 'classic rock'. It's why I'm on this board. It's why I'll never be 'happy' or even 'contented'. But not miserable. If I can help it.

Hart mentioned in a recent interview Alex Chilton washing dishes too. The new economy is the old economy. We have no function and we sleep on trash. Self-destruction beats self-improvement (yeah, 'Fight Club' ref). At least as far as creating great art goes.

Can I just recommend 'More Than Enough' by David Nance out on Ba Da Bing recently? The follow-up to the classic 'Actor's Diary' on Grapefruit Record Club. Some great songs and uninged destructo guitar. It rips.

I'll second that David Nance.  One of my most listened to records in recent memory.

Chamber rock is the new pop-punk.

Investigate's take on farty old dude record collectors and their (our) increduluosity that anyone could actually hate The Effigies is pretty funny. 'bout time someone stirred the pot...

Investigate. Realest gal in the forum, how you doin'?

What's Your Take On...

Los Crudos?
Over all I am indifferent to this band. I like some songs!

Crazy Spirit?
An alright BAND that sounds decent BUT is LEVI ART SCHOOL CORE. I like them when they sound nasty and they do MOST of the time but watching them means like looking at butt rock.

Coneheads?
I cannot listen to Devo because I hate the way it sounds. I don't like Coneheads because I don'tike bands that sound mOstly like Devo. So BA BA Black Sheep I don't like it!

Cassettes in 2016?
Good love them?

Twinkies?

Twinkeyz?

Craft beer?

Bernie?

This has been brought up before, but can people stop saying that The Coneheads sound like Devo?  In what fucking world do you live in that you hear the Coneheads and your first thought is Devo?

Investigate = first class troll.  Stirred my pot!

23. I have many friends who are 33 and older and it is the descent into death.

A lot of people like that band. I don't cuz I think they suck and are not good and are worthless unless the vokills are absent...love the riffs though. I don't like them. Why r u so mad about that? It's really no big deal. just because i think its cock rock doesn't mean u don't have to like it

I like Mad Nanna a lot. So funny and real like walking a child home on a sunny day.

What about "Body Bag"?  A song that few bands will ever touch.

More importantly, what about "vokills"?  Can we take a stand against that?
