In his golden age, the greatest, most primal ROCKER of all time.

I'm big on listening all the way through, even if I hate it.  Then I feel I can properly hate it.  Of course, if you've already heard it then take that shit off!

Polling the room: what was the best CT release? What was the absolute worst? I'm mostly ignorant to the label.
My favorites have been Soft Moon, Naomi Punk and EZTV. This is not considering reissues of course.
Worst: I don't know...working in a record store, I've heard A LOT over the years, and none of it has made me rush for the gong but there are certainly many sort of anonymous NYC Beach/Nothing sort of bands. They've put out a lot of music, so....like it or not, they've come to define a kind of sound/era like late 80s SST or something.
For whatever it is worth I have seen Jason reach for the gong on a record of a band by a friend of mine.  It was a great, hilarious moment.

Or whatever indeed.

Consider the source here.  In this case "defined" would mean sold a significant amount of and/or a case where Other Music's early support helped that band or that record reach a wider audience.  Those are all records that OM has sold a very significant amount of.

I have high hopes for the Savoy Motel LP, too.

Have you....heard Savoy Motel? I like Jeff and all, but voof!

Yeah, sure. The single was kind of cool. Certainly different than Cheap Time, but not "voof." I've heard the LP goes in another direction, so I'm definitely curious.

I'm a big fan of both their recorded works and their live show.  Different than anything Jeffrey has done, but I think it is just as good or better.  Pretty sure that they have a record coming out soonish

Headline reads Remembering Other Music, NYC's Last Great Record Store

It should read: Remembering Other Music, NYC's Last Great CD Store

p/s-- now reading above, yuk yuk, by fucking Boston white boy who calls himself "Ning Nong"? Guess he doesn't know about Ning Nong Dumplings in Flushing and the Ning Nong Serenity Spa in Elmhurst and fuck bad techno, still, reminds me why I took A LOT of Other Music shuck with huge grains salt to begin with (and anyone who doesn't think Tower, as a national chain, did more for non-white and weirdo culture, musical and otherwise, than Other Music ever could or will is either a dope or just being naive. People of a certain age here will recall when Tower Books was very important distributor of 'zines too etc.)

Tim Haslett (RIP), in particular, made a deep impression on me. I first came across Tim in 1995, when he worked at dance music retailer Boston Beat. I was usually too intimidated by the proper dance music and mostly stuck to the Warp section, but what struck me most was this bespectacled, bearded employee DJing techno in the shop, with a focus and intensity I had never seen before. To see the same guy turn up at a Tindersticks gig a few weeks later solidified him as a kindred spirit. It?s the willingness to embrace a wide range of music, and to draw similarities between things that seem unrelated, that is the spirit of the successful Other Music employee.

I was suddenly able to express why I attach the same level of importance to Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris as I attach to Hermann Nitsch?s Sinfonie F?r Mexico City or Pet Shop Boys? Behaviour.

"Wrecking Ball" by Emmylou Harris is fucking dogshit, always was, though dudes two to three decades older than "Ning Nong" loved to pretend otherwise, that they "got" Emmylou, the dark currents of her soul and the bright silver tufts of her lush and fleecy pubes.

"Taste" differs, yah, but flying the flag for sub-Starbucks pap like that... When Neil Young ain't even dead yet... Thank's "Ning Nong," for "turning us on"! I'm still "waiting" for Emmy's covers of "Revolution Blues," "Hippie Dream," "Are There Any More Real Cowboys," "No Hidden Path."

Wonder if he'll discover that authentique honky-tonk hero of Gram Parsons next?

Sure, I'll take your bait and give you a hearty FUCK YOU!

Ning Nong's tastes are deep and wide and I could care less if they align with mine, but a nicer, truer dude can not be found.

Also, folks are really missing the point (except IANMF & Eric).  This isn't about formats as a viable business model it is about the ever increasing rents in Manhattan and other parts of NYC (and surely in cities following the same convenience culture vs. actual culture path.)

And these topics have been covered here many times over the years, but I often thought of Mondo Kim's as the cities best overall store, but the vibe there and the thought of supporting Mr. Kim made shopping there a big time drag.  If you knew folks there it was sort of like visiting friends in jail, but the benefit was they would help you smuggle stuff out via great trade deals and better discounts.

Rocket Scientist was great too, John was and still is one of the best at selling records.  He'd always make great suggestions based on what you bought or asked about, almost always on the money.  He was also hyper paranoid and jealous of other NYC stores, esp. Other Music.  So much that shopping there could be a real chore if something set him off.

WHAT MY CLICHES? I HAVE NONE.

I just actually like music and discussing it. A lot.

Yeah, like Australian black metal, and Gucci Mane mixtapes, and the private press LPs you apparently believe Alice Coltrane to be releasing a decade past her death, and you deliver these opinions in bogus text-teen lingo. Accepting that you are a real, organic thing would be too depressing, so I'll just go with the likeliest real explanation: you're a bundle of socks, 2016 style, given cyber life by a team of overworked Koreans fed a steady diet of Pitchfork thinkpieces and Vice mag comment sections.

U r a poser. https://www.discogs.com/Alice-Coltrane-Turiyasangitananda-Divine-Songs/release/5121242
It has pasted-on covers. Recent SIDE.
Whatever, my style is so not p4k or vice.

Basically you're totally wrong and getting worked on because u are a bundle of socks.

Just get over it, bb.

Should you be taken to task for confusing bootleg with private press?  Of course you should.

Put a sock in it!

Dug the A-side of that Heron Oblivion, but sorta forgot it was even playing by the time the rec finished.  And like Mitch said, the vocals are sometimes so derivative of Fairport Convention & etc. that it's hard not to smirk.
If I had a problem with the record the vocals would be the last thing I had a problem with.  I'd listen to Meg sing termbo posts, even giantleech or TVeye77's posts.

Michael Morley - Moonrise  (Kye)  This came out at the tail end of last year, bought it on a whim and couldn't be happier.  To me it sounds like an acoustic Dead C record.
Stefan Christensen - Empty Continents (C/Site) More people should be paying attention here.  Sort of an American take on the Xpressway sound.  The tape that Night Peoples just reissued is really good too, as is the Estrogen Highs side of the split LP with Frustrations.
Halo of Flies - Music For Insect Minds (Am Rep)  Even though I have all of the singles and previous comps it is nice to finally have all of this stuff all in one place. A personal favorite.
Green River - 1984 Demos (Jackpot) Way more Flipper damaged than I remembered.  Really happy to have this and the thought that some Pearl Jam collectors feel the need to own this makes me chuckle.
Trad Gras Och Stenar - box (Archive)  Still jamming this, mostly the bonus stuff.  Really happy with it.
Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial (Matador) Still in shock that I not only care at all, but really love this.  Really reminds me of some 1991/92 era Karl Hendricks Trio or something when indie rock was still about rock and the bookish kids were just discovering Neil Young.
Also listening to Heron Oblivion, Parquet Courts, Cate Le Bon, Neil Hagerty and the Counter Intuits albums quite a lot.

You don't have to pay, but if you want to be on all of the lists you have to try to jump through most of their hoops.

For whatever people might think of the RSD crew I will say this, they work extremely hard and they are far from becoming rich from RSD.

Being upset about RSD is a lot like being upset with Pitchfork and their tagline "The most trusted voice in music."  It only matters as much as you let it matter.

Wouldn't be a grey one, it would be a record you put out on the same day as RSD.

What I am saying is that you could put out a record on that day and reap almost all of the same benefits without any of that upfront hassle on your part.  Of course, you put out real records that would do well any time of the year.  Having a record come out on RSD might bump up your numbers a bit or blow through your pressing faster.  Having an official RSD release would mean a lot of vague promotion, but it does not mean that every RSD store will suddenly be conversant (or stocking) in Laurice or Charlie Tweddle.

You aren't off base, but at the same time I don't know if you need to try to get official RSD status.  Just make them and have your regular distributors solicit them as RSD releases.  On the store level they can order and put those records out that day with the rest of the RSD stuff, there is no one saying they can't or anything.

Anti RSD sentiment has now reached catchphrase status which must mean it is working.  There are a few "requirements" for stores to be official RSD stores, but they aren't much of a big deal.  As far as having a release be considered an official RSD release goes it does involve a lot of hoops to jump through, the most significant being an insanely long lead time.  This is because assembling the RSD list and, in general, making sure that all (or almost all) of those records get released in time for RSD is a shit-ton of work and they want the list to be as accurate as it can be. I am not positive, but i think this is what prompted the United thing that people keep mentioning.  I've never encountered that, but that is coming from being at bigger labels.  I don't know what RSD was telling others.  If you've looked at the RSD release list from the last few years it has had a second section marked "regional or limited pressings" sections or something like that.  That is usually because the pressing  is for a specific country and/or in such small numbers that they want to temper expectations a bit on both the store and consumer level.

For real, I couldn't imagine anyone here that puts out records needing to/wanting to/being able to meet the deadlines etc. to have one of their releases be considered an official RSD release.  That being said, if you do put out a RSD release it can generate a ton more profile and get a lot more attention than any other time of the year.

So yeah, I realize that all of the planning ahead, willingness to engage the public at large and general happiness goes against why a lot of people opened record stores in the first place, but that doesn't automatically mean that RSD is the worst thing to happen to records or record stores.
