Reprobates - Latham NY, 6/18/08

Sometimes I feel like the double guitar in hardcore is cheating.  Too powerful.  In Reprobates' case, fuck it.  The venue had great acoustics.  The singer looked like he'd just gotten out of prison or back from Iraq or something... I thought he'd drunkenly snuck in the back door earlier in the show.  Swinging the fists, drinking Natty Ice.  Earing.  Then he gets behind the mic and they play "Stress" and they're fucking great.  Some mic mishaps piss the guy off and starts punching people, including Nuclear Family's female vocalist, right in the collar bone area.  Not fucking around.  A Reagan Youth cover degenerates and finally ends with the drummer giving the second guitarist a "FUCK YOU" and a big lugee to his pic guard.  Crash and splash cymbals are broken and thrown out to the floor.  Some more songs in, its getting rowdy.  Some chairs start flying into the pit from behind me.  All the Acid Reflux dudes are shoeless after throwing their kicks at Mr. singer guy.  Reflux's bassist dives off the bar onto him.  Lots of tech difficulties.  Songs start, they end.  Suddenly everyone's chanting "USA! USA!" to the touring Canadians.  "Fuck this gig, fuck this town".  He storms through the show room into the biker bar, some people chase him.  Band keeps playing.  He comes back escorted by some huge de facto bouncer.  The show goes on.  Eventually the mic cable won't cease becoming dislodged, so singer extrordinaire pulls his baggy pants down to reveal a "666" tattoo on his ass.  Then sticks the mic cable in.

Dark Ages from Kansas City (I think) played after that.  Squirrelly bike punks, good tunes.

Good openers too, but I'm tired and who cares.

Flux are just straight Anarcho... which is what I consider the founders of that strand of politics in punk music to be, i.e. Peni, Crass, Conflict, Flux, and all the Crass clones.  The way I see it, less cerebral brits took the politics/shock tactic aesthetic to their proletarian street level, where Discharge just happened to forge a drum style.  Then it just branched out in several directions, with the fashion and emphasis on noise/drugs being perhaps the only components retained... the globalization of punk music.  Now Indonesians in 2008 can start their own mid-90s Cali power-violence band.  Nuts.

Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday LP, monotastic

Total. Keep coming across stereo copies of Byrds albums I'm missing, but the monotastic experience of my copy of "Younger than Yesterday" vs. the stereo blandness of my "Turn Turn Turn" has me holding out for mono.

And the flea market vendor I bought it from seems to think those very stereo LPs are the bees knees, thus selling the mint mono plate to me for $2.  Ahhh, crazy people.

Those Were Different Times 3x10" back in print still a viable rumor, anyone?

Don't know, but I fucking hope so. I only have the cd. I think the Eels tracks on it are on par with  the stuff released on Eyball of Hell.

Fuck yeah, Wreck and Roll??? Creme de la creme.

I'm guessing "Total Abuse" is a Sotos reference. What's the music like?

Tight, thrashy, blown to shit hardcore with obnoxious over the top vox... in a loud way, not a "I wear lipstick and work at the sass factory" way.  Total dog food slop.  Brocore beware.  I don't know who Sotos is.

Civic Progress - Petroleum Man (closest thing to YDI you'll get in the 21st century)

Brain Handle LP

The new Civic Progress EP is bettern' the first! The recording on the new one blows the 1st one away...which is saying a lot, since the first one is great.

Brain Handle LP - I'm so glad this got an official release. The tour edition/brain cover ones were cool, Andy's cover art and the fake band pic on back made this even better.

I've got both CP records, and while I've only given Disposable a few spins it sounds like they've ditched everything that made Petroleum Man unique and sinister.  I saw them live too and somehow remember them sounding nothing like either record... I don't know what to think of the band.  And I was wondering what was up with the Brain Handle pic, that's funny.

I'm sure I'm biased since I'm from St. Louis, seen 'em a million times, know all of the members,  and their singer is our drummer. Between their demo, 1st 7" and the 2nd 7"....the vocals all sound different to me...and live even different. I see them as getting better and better...tho' I do like the production on the 1st EP...I think they needed the power of the recording on the 2nd EP....boy, that was sort of a pointless statement. Either way...the songs from both EPs are mainly from the same time...as in written closely together...so I'd chalk it up to the different production....then again, I'm probably over familiar with their songs, so the lines get blurred a bit for me.

Yeah, the vocals definately played a part in my assessment.  I never got a chance to hear the demo, but between the 7"s and live, I could have been under the impression that they were a different band each time.  I like the production of the first EP, it really compliments a song like "I.F.A.", which is where the YDI reference came from (reminds me of "Mad At The World").  Disposable isn't bad at all, I actually scampered back to my room to listen to it after these posts.  I do think there's some more interesting riffage on Petrol Man when it comes down to it, but the production (sounding like it was recorded at an Upstab session or something) seals the deal.  Reinforces that they're an interesting hardcore band regardless.  Live they were just too brief, I think they wanted to get the hell out of a smelly Buffalo punk house and go home.
