Just polished off JG Farrell's The Siege of Krishnapur, about a British East Indian Co. garrison that holds out in an isolated regional town during the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. It's an amalgam of the experiences of various outposts that held out for months in horrific conditions, all keeping up that Stiff Upper Lip while corpses are rotting all around them and people are shitting themselves to death from cholera, trying to keep up their tea parties and moralistic discussions all the while. In the end, they end up stuffing silver cutlery and candlesticks into the cannon to blast the locals as they swarm over the walls. There are actually many passages of the blackest comedy in this thing, like when the previously dreamy romantic poet tries to strangle an enemy soldier with a broken violin, or when a local clothes washer who stayed inside the beseiged compound starts shaking the ladies down to keep washing their torn up dresses. Empire = absurdity. Highest recommendation.

Next up: Grey Moon Over China, a sci fi about energy wars breaking out in the near future.
