I forget, was there an email or something that went out when this went live? I remember the conversations around naming the board and starting this after Blank Generation folded...

Yeah, a small group of us group-emailed about all the details for a while. I'm #34. I think the whole forum deal was meant to be ancillary - hell, seemed like an afterthought, mostly something so we wouldn't have to Cc: a million people every time we talked - but took off and was quickly the most popular part of the Termbo universe.

I remember that -- the forum being kind of an afterthought. I also remember Rich and I have a long conversation at the Blackout about the pros/cons of pulling the plug on the messageboard.

Yeah, unless you need to unload stuff quick, go with Discogs. It might take a little while, but stuff moves.

Music Shit / Re: "Perfect" albums

Man, there are so many albums in this thread I find unlistenable as a whole, nevermind being solid or "perfect." To each their own I guess.

Anyways, Bad Times LP is top to bottom solid. All killer.

Already mentioned, but X "Aspirations" and Zero Boys' "Vicious Circle" easily fit the bill for me.

And I know this has been cause for debate here in the past, but the first Little Killers LP is one I find myself still pulling out, playing front to back multiple times. And the first Hunches LP more than any other their other records.

How's Pagans?

Saw one today but took the sure bet of the Modernettes reissue at half the price.

I had a copy of that same show on LP that I got like 15 years ago and I remember selling it right after I got it. Not sure if it was a crappy recording or me just being broke? If be interested to know if they cleaned it up (not sure much could be done) from the old copy floating around.

Unless they found a better quality source tape, I don't know how much it could be cleaned up. I had (and sold) the copy of this that came out in the '90s too. Sound quality was pretty bad.

Also, was this http://www.discogs.com/Mad-Virgins-I-Am-A-Computer-Fuck-Suck/release/6898898 100 press likely just the color version and there are more around? Not sure if it's an RSD but WGAF.

There's a regular black vinyl version of this too (400 copies). Same label did the Chainsaw and X-Pulsion/Streets 7"es too. Not RSD.

This made my day. Thanks for the heads up.

The color version of the 7" came if you bought the 3 pack of all his releases. Wasn't a bad price either..

Seems like the 3 pack of color is still available. I just ordered it anyway. Good price -- about $25US for the three of them, with shipping.

Music Shit / Re: Bombshell LP Allied Recordings

Yah Mos and John Henry West are great. Econochrist was OK, they must've sold a shitload of records. Don't think I ever actually heard Paxton Quigley but would always see the damn name.

Helmet just toured, like, 'Betty,' an album I think I've heard less than 5 times. But those first two still kick, corny or not.

I loved the stuff in the vein of John Henry West / Admiral / Iconoclast and (to a lesser extent Chino Horde). K454 were pretty good, especially live. Loud as fuck. A lot of these bands though were fucking terrible then and haven't aged well.

And the Yah Mos, man, I feel like they get lumped in with this stuff because of when they were around more than anything. They were more punk than hardcore. But they blew my mind when I saw them. Such a breath of fresh air...seeing them when I was on tour with Friction -- a band that didn't just roll around on the floor screaming with a tape playing static and nonsense in the background in between songs (thanks Hoover).

The Bombshell LP (and 7") weren't very good. I liked Friction and Fuel too, but Bombshell just never hit the mark. It's been so long since I've listened to it I can't give you a good description, but it's more akin to Spoke (the FL band) or other early '90s Gainesville area bands than Friction or Fuel. But not nearly as solid. Maybe a bit Sparkmarker-ish? Dogs on Ice?

Eh, I'm reaching...probably not worth the time. Though like you said, the records can be had for cheap if you're REALLY curious.

Related to this thread, Jessica Hopper has a book out of her music criticism. It's got a pretty humble title:

The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic

For what it's worth, the US dollar is crushing the Aussie dollar right now. Still a pricey 45, but for Yanks it'll probably never be cheaper.

That's pretty great. Just out of curiosity, did you get that when it came out or score it later on?

I got it later, in the 90s. I didn't start going to shows and stuff until '88.
