HOT GUTS [philadelphia//badmaster records]
Hot Guts have impressed their name upon Philly's burgeoning noise/post-punk scene over the last few years. After expanding to a trio and working out their material over a number of live shows (with the likes of Mi Ami, A Frames, Birds of Maya and The Intelligence), the group finally started creating take-home versions of their songs via Badmaster Records. A three-song 7" showcased their minimal, rhythm-heavy, goth-tinged industrial tunes and they have now upped the ante with a split 7" with Pop. 1280. This show celebrates this record (also on Badmaster), which pairs two new Hot Guts gems with a single scorcher from the NYC-based Pop. 1280. Expect big things from the upcoming Kill Shaman/Aural Pleasures release and forthcoming LP!

Songs of alienation and paranoia abound from NYC street-dwellers Pop. 1280. There are familiar touchstones for sure: the pulsating drum and synth attack of early Tuxedomoon, the cold minimalism of The Normal, even Stooges-esque proto-punk energy. But over the course of a single, their recent split with Hot Guts (on West Philadelphia's own Badmaster Records) and a new 12" on Sacred Bones, the group continually delivers on fresh sounding, interestingly-produced one-, two- and three-chord workouts, equally suitable for the mosh pit and the treadmill.

A genuinely new and interesting creation from the slice-of-paradise Valley an hour north, SOARS are a relatively new addition to eastern Pennsylvania's increasingly interesting independent music scene in 2010. A debut LP on La Societe Expeditionnaire offers up eight tracks worth of strangeness and beauty where synth, heavily-processed guitars, vocals and drum machine coalesce into one sumptuous noise. Recent live shows are an indication of the great things this new group has in store. Don't miss this!

Very new trio of Philadelphians playing dense and heavy instrumentals. Formerly involved in projects like Mass Movement of the Moth, Ingrid, Sick Weapons and Des Ark, Birth Noise are quite mysterious at the moment, only appearing in a faintly-lit yet chaotic video clip. Find out more and crack the code at this show!
