Music Shit / Re: Beach Boys "Kokomo"
« on: August 29, 2008, 11:29:33 AM »
you could easily replace "Beach Boys" with "Brian Wilson" in my previous post.  Although, many of the songs Carl and Dennis, and even Al, wrote were excellent too.  Mike Love gets credits for making nominal contributions, such as bad, often embarassing, lyrics, which people blow out of proportion ("the music's good but the lyrics are terrible!"  who gives a fuck?).

"Beach Boys > Kinks > Beatles",

i would agree with this, and i don't think it's ridiculous just because they had some "embarassing stuff".  at their absolute best, the beach boys blow both the kinks and the beatles outta the water.  (kinks are probably closer.)

obviously that's just my opinion.  but the folks who claim the beatles are the best band ever are generally the same ones who say radiohead is right there with 'em (ie - british music journalist and historians).  and while i think radiohead is a fine band -- if a little boring -- they're no beach boys...  just because we all grew up hearing that the beatles were the creme de la cream, doesn't make it true.  fight musical dogma!

These guys were scheduled to play the Black Cat in DC back in April or May, but the show as canceled about a month prior.  Did they end up playing any reunion gigs?  I can't imagine it would have been so good....

Music Shit / Re: Crystal Stilts review on Dusted

i kinda do too, in fact... and i felt bad about posting that a second after i hit the button.  a month after i moved here, i considered moving to baltimore but i didn't.  dc's got some redeeming qualities, and it's annoying when people just drop into town and think it blows because they don't where to go or what to do.

(i'm not saying you're completely wrong ADM, DC does in fact suck in general.  but baltimore ain't that much better.)

people who live in DC hate people from NYC that look like they are bored

DC sux

well, we can't all live in baltimore now can we?...

crystal stilts seemed a little fatigued in DC, and i was a little disappointed overall.  the sound was way thin for a five-piece... could barely hear the keyboard/organ. maybe that was the soundman's fault, though.  they didn't really seem into it at all either.  brining back shoegaze in more ways than one.  the new songs sounded good, though.

vg were fine.  i think the girls i was with liked them a lot more than i did.  their beach boys cover was great.

btw, what's with the line-up switch?  the old drummer is now in c.s. and there's a brand vivian girl?

Music Shit / Re: Finally listening to Sic Alps U.S EZ LP
« on: August 12, 2008, 12:41:05 PM »
listening to this right now and it is pretty fucking swell. in fact, if the sic alps or siltbreeze need a quote from a celebrity:

Scott Soriano says "Pretty fucking swell,"

i was wondering your thoughts on this bc as i recall, you weren't so into the 12" on mtstmtn but really dug the first LP.  this one's kinda in between, i'd say.

Music Shit / Re: so who works for hook and crook and food network?

that restaurant is kinda funny because there was TONS of press about it before it opened, on grub street, eater, etc. and then it opens and no one went... and it gets luke-warm reviews, and it's still around but probably not doing too well.  a favorite quote from sam mason about Tailor was something about how on opening night it wasn't full "because everyone assumed they probably couldn't get in".   great!

theres a cooking show with some douche with an accent cooking and on his fridge is a flyer that clearly says "hook and crook records"  and "golden boys".  i'll post the host's name once i figure it out.  i watch food network a lot, i mean, A LOT, but have never seen this dude.

is this some sam mason - "dinner with the band" crap? "pastry chefs are tough. i work out listening to matt & kim. LOOK AT MY TATTOOS." the episode with the fucked up is readily available on youtube.

i still have hopes that wylie dufrense will put him down for the good of humanity.

please note: i never went to tailor during the sam mason era. perhaps danenergy did, and can comment as to the actual quality of their food.

sam mason's no longer at tailor?  i've seen dinner with the band, it's kind of unbearable....

I heard they all had a blast then got really drunk last night and passed out.

Good job, Columbus.

Music Shit / Re: The Aislers Fucking Set
« on: August 09, 2008, 06:30:25 AM »
Never liked Aisler Set's records. Always seemed to have a dull sheen to them. And they were much better live. However, both live and on record I'll take Henry's Dress any day.
On record, I think the "Been Hiding/Fire Engines" 7" is probably their highlight. "Fire Engines" is a monster of a song, and i've been listening to it in my rental car all week.  Please note: I do not currently own the above record, and would like to acquire one.
