The goal of this whole movement isn't to reduce oppression and violence toward vulnerable, marginalized groups -- that would require actual effort beyond bellyaching on Twitter and Tumblr (and Pitchfork, naturally); it's about hating, "outing" and whining about the oppressors, which seems like a complete waste of resources. Like everything else in the world, it isn't about the truth; it's about fetishizing, idolatry, symbols. Did any of those who murdered the six transgendered mentioned in the article listen to, y'know, Nig-Heist or Swans? Maybe; but my money's on Toby Keith. (Also, if anybody, including the author of the Pitchfork article, bothered to check, one of the murderers was the victim's boyfriend, so I hope I'm not overstepping my privileged, white, cis-gendered male boundaries if I go ahead and declare that one to not be a case of transphobia.)
At the moment, even among most liberals, freedom of expression is still regarded as an inalienable human right, whereas the right to not be offended isn't. I completely lack the energy and perseverance to hate women, homosexuals and the transgendered, but, goddamn it, not everything needs to be for everybody. Imagine how shitty music would be if everything was the equivalent of McDonald's. I thought we all agreed that, if you don't like it, then by all means exercise your right to turn it off.
