(probably) no more records this year.  i'm not being lazy, though--just don't wanna rush records out in december.  but i do wanna let people know what's going on.

January 2010:

Balaclavas - Roman Holiday LP
debut long player from Houston, TX's best.  Dubbed out dark rock, in the vein of PiL, Eno, Can, and Pere Ubu.  HEAVY and amazing.

Lamps - Niehls Bohr 7"
carchiest song we've heard yet from these guy.  the riff is permanently lodged in my brain.

Early 2010:

The Go-Betweens - '78 Til '79: The Lost Album LP
so fucking excited to get to work on this.  I'm a huge Go-Betweens fan, and believe this is far and away their best material.  The album compiles their unreleased first album, which is bookended by the two singles ("Lee Remick" b/w" Karen", and "People Say" b/w "Don't Let Him Come Back") they self-released on their Able imprint.  This is the band at their stripped down best, minus the gloss of their 80's output.  Will be packaged in a nice tip-on jacket.

Big Blood LP
follow up to their soon to be released debut LP Time-Lag.  2/3 of Fire On Fire playing incredibly lovely rural rock/folk.  Great early Velvets druggy vibe to this one.

The Wiggins LP
long-swaited first full length from this Cramps/Metal Urbain/Love and Rockets influenced one man band.

Later in 2010:

Rusted Shut - Rehab LP
Finally on vinyl.  Finest noise rock album ever, in my biased opinion.

Richard Youngs - Sharks LP
Power electronics long player from the avant legend.  Much in the vein of his dull knife 7".

plus a couple more full lengths from some favorites and a couple of 7"s that i don't wanna talk about just yet.  thanks to anyone that has ever bought a dull knife release! see you soon.

Music Shit / Balaclavas LP
« on: October 21, 2009, 09:17:58 AM »
HOLY SHIT does this thing sound awesome.  Like a perfect mix of Eno, PiL, Can, Pere Ubu, and maybe Siouxsie?  Dubbed out dark rock?  The rhythm section is ridiculously tight and heavy.   The record goes to press this week.  Best fucking thing I've heard out of this place since Rusted Shut's "Rehab".  I'll see about posting a song later today.

KNIFE013 Rosemary Krust - Bernt Anker 7"
4 songs of noisy, delicate, barely there pop songs--all hanging together by a thread. The Baltimore duo of Katherine Plummer and William Hardy have a sound that harkens back to a time when twee wasn't a bad word and lo-fi wasn't marketing jargon. Rosemary Krust seemlesly blend the fuzz and fumble of Charalambides with the naive pop of Beat Happening, finding their own charming niche. They've even been referenced as an American version  Garbage & The Flowers, which certainly isn't a bad thing. 300 hand-numbered copies.

Copies will ship by the weekend.

The next record in the ongoing dull knife songwriter series is nearly here in the form of an Andre Ethier single.  Test presses sounded great, and the record is 2-3 weeks from release.

Andre is best known as the former lead vocalist and songwriter of The Deadly Snakes, whose swansong "Porcella" has to be considered one of the best albums of this decade. Andre hasn't exactly been on hiatus since the Snakes called it quits--though it may be news to most Americans, Ethier has released 4 albums over the past 5 years in his native Canada, all of which I recommend seeking out.  "Running of the Bulls" marks both Ethier's solo and vinyl debuts in the U.S., and dull knife couldn't be happier to release it.

The single finds Andre reuniting with former Deadly Snakes band mates Matt Carlson and Maxwell McCabe-Lokos (as well as Toronto musician Andrew Moszynski), to produce a sound that's is a logical bridge between The Snakes and Andre's solo material.  These aren't just two songs slapped together with no thought--no, these are songs that were wrote and meant to be paired together, as they are weaved together in an ironic interplay.  I'm incredibly biased, but this is my favorite single of the year thus far.

300 hand-numbered copies in silkscreened chipboard Arigato paks with pasted on photos from Andre.  3 photo variations, 100 copies of each variation.  Same deal as those Dan Melchior and Richard Youngs singles.

I have a limited amount available for direct sale, as most were snatched by various distros and mailorders.

The next dull knife mix cd-r is also nearly ready, and the first 10 orders will get copies.  Mix #7 is a New Wave of British/Swedish Heavy Metal mix curated by Ry Wharton of incredible Skulltones Records imprint in a silkscreened arigato pak.

$8 PPD in the US
$9 PPD in CAN/MEX
$12 PPD to the rest of the world

Here's what folks had to say about each record..

Rusted Shut - Hot Sex 12"

"Of all the fucked up, nasty ass, deliriously damaged rock bands in the recent history of the American underground wonderland (particularly Texas), none come close to the squirm and hellacious sqwunk of Rusted Shut. From the incinerated skum of Houston weirdness improv outfit Grinding Teeth arose Rusted Shut in 1986. Their shows were a notorious mess, drunken and fueled by cheap-jack acid. After years of slovenly survival they?ve been somewhat rescued from universal distaste by the current noise legions. The Emperor Jones label released the Rehab CD in 2003 and AA Records did a sick lathe (?Bring Out Your Dead?) last year and their notorious ?Fuckin?? track off the 2006 End Times Festival live comp is still the only loop that matters (check their myspace page for that one). It was with some apprehension of being held up by knife point that we unzipped their new Hot Sex EP (Dull Knife). But goddamn if this is not a great goddamned beast of a record. The core duo of Don Walsh and Sybil Chance (the original still alive members of Grinding Teeth) and Domokos (on drums and ?earthscreamer?) just lay it out in an unctious smear of rawk n roll decimating any obvious pretence of hardcore, black metal, death metal, sludge, punk, avant improv goop etc.?shit is the REAL amerika full on. Salute and die." - Thurston Moore/Byron Coley, Arthur Magazine

"Timely issue from this label that have been doing a good job of documenting the past and future sound of Texas: for a group as, uh, notorious and long-serving as Rusted Shut their lack of any kind of international profile would be kinda puzzling if it wasn?t for their in-built auto-destruct mechanism, their uncompromising approach to their art and their almost impenetrably weird combination of behemoth riffs, psychedelic F/X and mind-phasing production. Hot Sex is only their 3rd release in 22 years and comes from 1997 sessions cut by what many people consider this group?s finest line-up, just before the notorious Rehab sessions. These guys have actually been around since 1986 in Houston, Texas (where the fuck else?) and have gathered fans and devotees that include Wolf Eyes (Nate Young released a lathe-cut by them on AA Records) and Tom and Christina Carter. Their lives shows are legendarily chaotic, with tales of actual physical fights on stage, drunk beyond belief, ear-crippling volume and endless monochord riffs. The sound on this four track 33rpm EP (35+ mins) is uniquely confusing, with live jams that cross the torrents of contemporary Whitehouse with a production style that make em sound like they are phasing in and out of separate space/time continuums, pounding riffs that take The Stooges as far as the most fanatical Billy Bao sides, hardcore/doom vox, Dead C style breakdowns and a totally fucked up, sociopathic psychedelia that is only really comparable to fellow Lone Star schlocktroopers The Butthole Surfers. If you dug the No Fucker EPs but yr more into hallucinogens than amphetamines then this could be your brand of brain erasure. Seen these guys compared to Brainbombs a lot and while there?s a similarly wretched misanthropic streak that runs through the music, these guys are a hell of a lot weirder. The first track in particular, ?Woman?, takes several spins before it even begins to make sense. This is a great, unique psychedelic hardcore record, and the whole package just looks fantastic. Love it. Edition of 500 copies. Highly recommended." - David Keenan, Volcanic Tongue

"White Noise. White Heat. White House. Paint peeling MINUTES of delayed vocals cut away to organ twiddling and bass throbbing with a trenchcoat mafia fashion sense. When the drums kick in the songs begin?uh, proper. It all bobs along like Brainbombs buried in an Anton LaVey circus (corpse) grinder fuck all. The guitar f/x and vocals start to bite. Ya? think it?s skipping. It?s not. Stereo destroyer. All the more scary: these dudes are legit Texas out-theres. You can picture their nappy beards and feces encrusted sweatpants. Burzum albums. Miserable Life. Primordial Action Swingers vibe? Yeah, the stench is lingering. Before Jarboe-fucked-up-the Swans, the cutter fans and Trve Kvlt Metal denizens will have a heyday in this pile of puke. I can?t tell if it?s slowing down on its own or if my turntable belt just died. I?d review this track by track, but it all seems so blurry to me. I just woke up and I think my asshole is bleeding. This is hate. Like if Slicing Grandpa or Billy Bao were actually willing to kill people. File it in your ?taste of plaque? section. 500 copies out there. Mine was lucky to come with a short DVD of them playing along with exposed titties and Painteens alumni. Groovy." - (RSF), Terminal Boredom

Indian Jewelry/Future Blondes 12":

"Two heavy electronic/phaser rock outfits bring the sidelong barbiturate dance party to your place. Indian Jewelry has never been able to sit still within its preferred bank of styles, so it?s great to hear them really develop a sickly, nauseating groove on ?Zing Zang? that the Butthole Surfers might have taken as their own twenty years back, and by the time the spoken word section kicks in, you?ve either barfed in the sink or passed out. That?s how this works. Future Blondes is a new project from Domokos of Rusted Shut, focusing on driven, heavily distorted drum machine tracks, synths, and obfuscated vocals. You could probably fit this into a set, but you?d have to have a whole set of dance music fucked up enough to pull it off. The trance parts of ?Heartless? are offset only by the noise within. Death stalker times, killer record. Dull Knife strikes again." -Doug Mosurock, Dusted Magazine

We gave you a break for a couple of months, but the new dull knife is
here in the form of the Circuit des Yeux - "Fruition" 7".

Haley Fohr follows up her cult LP on De Stijl and appearances on the
Die Stasi curated "XXperiments" compilation (as both CdY and as one
half of Cro Magnon) with the haunting "Fruition" 7".  This EP finds
her exploring more, dare I say, accessible song territory than
previous outings while still retaining that late night, under the
bridge loner vibe that made her previous work so striking.

Hand-numbered edition of just 300 green vinyl records in glued pocket
sleeve with silkscreened vellum obi strip.  First 30 copies include a
silkscreened poster insert, 20 of which go to the first 20 direct
mailorder customers
edit: ALL GONE.  The other 10 copies will be available directly
from Circuit des Yeux on her east coast tour beginning June 10.

I'm just putting the finishing touches on the obi strips, and the
records will start shipping this weekend.

You can order here: http://www.dullkniferecords.com/2009/03/circuit-des-yeux-fruition-7.html

Be sure to also check out the Distro section, which is linked from the
dull knife main page.  We have very limited quantities of some killer
titles, including the Drunkdriver 7" for you Rusted Shut fans, an
impressive electro pop 7" from Moscow's Private Entertainment, and the
amazing Mirrors LP reissue--Velvets fans and fans of Cleveland's
demented punk past should absolutely not sleep on that one.

Next on the schedule are the Ash Castles on the Ghost Coast 2xLP, a
Lamps 7", and the next entry in the songwriters 7" series from Andre
Ethier, former front man of the incredible Deadly Snakes. Plus many
more that I can't talk about yet... Stay tuned.

After a hectic March (5 releases in one month--never try that one again), we took a quick break to catch our breath and live life.

Things are active again, and get back on track with a Circuit des Yeux 7" just in time for the east coast tour in June.  Following up the incredibly limited and haunting  LP on De Stijl and appearances on the the killer XXperiments comp on Die Stasi as both Circuit des Yeux and half of Cro-Magnon, Haley offers up her first single and and most accesible offering to date with the "Fruition" 7" on dull knife.  Hand-numbered edition of 300 in a textured glued pocket color sleeve with silkscreened vellum obi strip.  These will be available from CdY on tour, and available for mailorder as soon as I can finish assembling the packaging for the balance of copies.

Final details are being hammered out for the Ash Castles on the Ghost Coast 2xLP, which will go to press very soon.  Acid drenched psychedelia and free music from  Heather Leigh Murray (ex-Charalambides, boss of the outstanding Volcanic Tongue store/mailorder) and Shawn McMillen (Warmer Milks collaborator) from the 90's.  Previously released on cd-r and short run CD, avaibale for the first time on vinyl.  A Houston scene document that I've always wanted to work on.

I won't want to reveal too much about the upcoming records in the songwriter series of 7" releases, but expect releases from Andre Ethier (ex-Deadly Snakes), Kathy Leisen (Soft Location), Glenn Donaldson (Skygreen Leopards, Der TPK, Giant Skyflower Band, Jewelled Antler Collective, etc.) + more!

Expect LP's from Balaclavas and Natural Snow Buildings later this fall/winter.

Music Shit / blank chipboard, raw kraft, or CCNB LP covers?
« on: February 08, 2009, 01:00:02 PM »
does this go here or non-music?  whatever.

i'm looking for blank chiboard , CCNB or raw kraft LP covers.

stumptown and vg kids have different options, but you have use them to print a minmum of 300 jackets. i just want to silkscreen 100 jackets myself.

can anyone suggest places that sell blank, unique LP jackets?

i should add that i'm interested in glued LP jackets.  worst comes to worst, i can make my own foldovers--but that's a last resort.
