Music Shit / Re: What is everybody listening to? Part III

I've seen Brotzmann a couple of times, including the show later released on OkkaDisk as "The Atlanta Concert," which was one of the two or three best shows I've ever seen. I've only listened to the record like once, though, I think I'm afraid it's not going to be as good as I remember.

T Funk at the Bottle last night = best opening band since I saw Dog Faced Hermans play two encores as the second of three bands (opening for Sebadoh of all bands....) in 1994. No shit. The rhythm section is so solid, those dudes make the whole thing work. They seemed like they really wanted to play and get the fuck out, though. Short set (about 25 minutes) with very minimal stage chatter.

Ah, I have the Skyclad. I guess it's the Radiums going for like $150.

Great record.

I've seen the vinyl of "In the Air Tonight" going for crazy prices (like over a bill) lately. Are there multiple versions of it? I grabbed a clean vinyl copy for $25 last weekend.

Please send stuff to:

WXYC
c/o Music Director
CB 5210, Carolina Union
Chapel Hill NC 27599

I don't work there anymore (since I moved), but they are freeform and play a wide variety of stuff. Definitely open to weird stuff, punk or not.

Left Banke actually wrote it. They released their single in 1966, Four Tops covered it a couple years later.

Thank you, Wikipedia!

I don't like Atmosphere at all. I've only heard a few songs and they all sucked.

Huh. That must just be the general Midwestern white guy sound (although Slug's a quadroon). The stuff on the "Headshots" tapes and the first Atmosphere album ("Overcast!") is the shit. Dope 4-track sounding beats and straight up rhyming, none of the emo rapping about girls bullshit that has marred most of his output over the past decade.

David Banner's cool, but I don't know that I'd recommend any one of his albums. You should get the Crooked Lettaz album, that's the group he was in before he went solo. You should be able to find it used pretty easily. It's really good.

I just listened to K-Vint's MySpace tracks, which were actually not bad (although I prefer Pink Reason!). I detect an Atmosphere influence for sure, like the early stuff before he started sucking.

I'm sorry, a lot of the stuff y'all are talking about is terrible. I'm with Kevin that most major label rap kills indie shit. You'd actually be surprised what rappers are into punk, though. I read an interview with Bun B. from UGK, who is one of the greatest MC's ever, where he said he grew up listening to Black Flag and shit in the 80s, as well as hip-hop, of course. Cee-lo from Goodie Mob (and Gnarls Barkley) is also a rock head.

Some of the arty, underground stuff is really good, though, like Cannibal Ox, Company Flow, Freestyle Fellowship, Latryx, etc.

A girl I went to college with made out with Carrie Brownstein once in Paris. The same chick was also on College Jeopardy!

So, Laura, did you ever post your thoughts on Team Dresch in '08? Did I miss it? I actually had a tape with "Call on the Doctor" on one side and "Personal Best" on the flip that I fucking wore out in the mid-to-late 90s. Haven't listened to either in a while, though. I really like Jody Bleyle's voice for some reason. There's one Hazel song she sings that might fit with this thread (i.e., no one else likes Hazel, and really, I only like that one song).

nope, preorders are a pain in the ass. means i have to remember things. fuck that.

Or write things down and be able to find them again, which is even worse.

"(Don't Fear) the Reaper" by the Blue Oyster Cult, "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" by Pere Ubu, "Venus" by Television, Richard Hell's version of "Walking on Water", Roky Erickson's incredible "Two-Headed Dog" and an excerpt from Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music.

One of these things is not like the other....

I'm down with BOC, but "(Don't Fear) the Reaper" in the same sentence with those other songs looks real weird to me.
