Oh yeah, Stiff Legged Sheep were from Iowa City, put out one 7-inch in '84 or '85, which is awesome. I recently found out one of the dudes is now in Double U, this very TFUL 282-influenced band with a few albums on Communion.  Apparently, he's known the TFUL 282 people since they all lived in Iowa over twenty years ago! Crazy!

I have never heard of most of these bands.  Will investigate.

Honor Role is good, though, I love them. The Ex, I know, obviously. I was thinking more of American bands.

Keep em comin!

I've been listening to a lot of this stuff lately, some of which is relatively new to me. Stuff like Proletariat, Really Red, Stiff Legged Sheep, Minutemen, Saccharine Trust, really early Meat Puppets, early Butthole Surfers, stuff like that. Anyone got any recommendations? I'm talking about Hardcore Era (1980-1985) bands, not Gravity Records or whatever. Thanks, dudes.

>Zen Arcade isn't even the best Husker Du record, dummies!<

right. that would be New Day Rising, which may be my fave SST. also up there that has yet to be mentioned, the Meat Puppets - Huevos

Wrong! Everything Falls Apart is the best Husker Du, and Huevos sucks. Up On the Sun is hella underrated, though. I like that one almost as much as the first two.

Music Shit / Re: hip-hop

I used to be really into hip-hop, but haven't been following it as closely lately.  Prodigy from Mobb Deep had a solo LP a few years ago that was pretty straight.  Z-Ro and Trae out of Houston have been holding it down for the last few years, both solo and as the group ABN (Assholes By Nature). They can both rap their asses off, and Z-Ro is also a really good Nate Dogg-ish singer. It's actually a lot better than that description sounds.

The Beach Boys get so much credit for their efforts at harmony arrangement, but the bulk of their stuff was just standard shit.  These 8 discs show how wide spread this shit was back in the day.

The official story on the Death record is that it's "punk before punk" (and they're black--crazy!), and "punk" for a Rolling Stone writer is the Buzzcocks. It's pretty much that simple. He woulda said Sex Pistols or the Clash, but felt that was too obvious.

I'm like super confused here. I sent payment for the So Cow and Static Static records last Thursday, and then the records unexpectedly arrived at my apartment yesterday (Tuesday).  WTF???  Please wait at least three months before shipping next time. Thanks.

Mayyors is good, although I doubt many of these kids are going to go buy a turntable and then make sure they are online 24/7 so they can Paypal fast enough to get one of the records.

Maybe Helmet? All kids feel that they're unsung.

Looks interesting, free jazz? Coltrane, Ayler, Sun Ra, Peter Brotzmann Octet...or something else?

It's from 1975. Frank Lowe is a tenor player who was definitely influenced by late Trane and Ayler, and there's some of that upper register squealing. But, this record has a lot more going on than some contemporary free jazz records. Lowe knows his music history, and he draws on some earlier jazz, as well r n'b, funk, and even some rock sounds. It's a really great record and might have more for a non-jazzbo to grab onto than some seemingly similar records. His album "Fresh" can be found pretty easily, it was one of those Arista Freedom titles. Also reissued on the cheapie Black Lion label on CD. Another good 'un.

Zen Arcade isn't even the best Husker Du record, dummies!

Best SST record: Double Nickels on the Dime

Best underappreciated SST record: Slovenly - We Shoot for the Moon

Any of you rockers wanting to get into free jazz should check this out.

This band should be blackballed forever because of their name.

Harry, when we were giving tips on how to set up your bedroom did we forget to mention sheets?

Those are these new sheets that are designed to look like a mattress. Shit is crazy.
