Non-Music Shit / Re: College Basketball 08/09

I was counting the BC victory as the first game of the series. Anyway, it's really not as simple as Rice beat UNC's team.  It was more like Lawson got caught up in a one-on-one match-up and took the team out of their regular defense.  Lawson is even quicker than Rice, anyway.

I don't think many teams have a 9th man better than Will Graves, who is UNC's 9th man.  But, yeah, having a quick, high-scoring guard like Tyrese Rice, playing smothering halfcourt defense (especially zone), limiting turnovers, and hitting your open 3's is the way to beat UNC.  But, that's a lot easier said than done.

Really, BC had a good night, and UNC had a bad night. If they played a best-of-5, I bet UNC wins 3-1.

Give us some dirt on Gaudio, man!  I'm actually more into college basketball recruiting than college basketball, which probably corresponds to record-collecting in some depressing way.  Anyway, if you can share any recruiting stories, I promise I won't narc to the NCAA! I just know that some shady and hilarious shit happens with all of that.

I follow the NBA more closely than college hoops, but I went to UNC and am a big Tar Heel fan, so I watch almost all of their games. Missed the BC game, though, but I think it was probably a fluke.  They were blowing people out and probably got lazy.  They also were traveling a lot during the holidays and had just played in Reno, NV, halfway across the country, so they were tired. Lame excuse, but I bet it was a factor.

I'd be surprised if they lost more than two more games this season. Their main problem is containing quick guards on defense and running any kind of half-court offense. When they can't run the secondary break, and the freelance doesn't lead to anything, they can't score.  Weird that a team that routinely scores 100 points can have problems scoring, but it's true.

I got the email, but my last name was spelled wrong.

I thought the original group did it by only sending one tape each, but I can't figure out how.

Second Hashim's "Al Naafiysh (The Soul)". That is a monster record.

I skimmed the thread, but I don't think anyone mentioned Man Parrish. "Hip-Hop Be Bop" is one of my favorite all-time songs.

Pretty Tony aka Freestyle (the man who named the genre) had some good stuff, too.

I know CD comps are lame, but the Street Jams series on Rhino is pretty thorough.

Egyptian Lover played in Chicago a little while ago. I thought about going, but it looked like it was at some dance club for middle-aged Latinos. Which would've been pretty awesome, really.

Marineville Records is kinda good, actually, in a really dorky way.

Ah, fuck it, Google tells me it's already taken by a label and a store.

polvo reunion.  one of the few shows i've walked out on.

For real? Where at? I saw both shows in Chicago and thought they were pretty awesome. The show at Subterranean was one of the better shows I've seen them play, and I used to live in Chapel Hill and saw them a lot back then.

It depends on what you're looking for. Dusty Groove overcharges for their used stuff, but has pretty low prices on reissues. For contemporary, harder to find stuff, like European labels, Cadence's mail order is good: http://www.cadencebuilding.com/cadence/musicsaleshp.html

Squidco.com is also good for hard to find contemporary avant-garde type stuff.

And eBay.

Bought it from Fat Possum after they dropped the price. I still feel ripped off. Two short songs that are probably the worst songs I've heard TF do.  I loved the earlier singles and the album, but I'm now officially worried.

Why do you think Derrick was cut by a chick?  That story is very suspicious, though.  I don't believe for a second that he hangs out in bed slicing apples.

I thought Eat Skull was pretty bad at the Cobra Lounge.  I was really tired (why were there FOUR bands on a weeknight? Okay, I'm old...), so I wasn't sure if it was me or them.  Also, I sort of assumed they were being obnoxious  and retarded on purpose.

Can I be down?  I'd have to get the tape deck out of the closet, but I have much music to share with you all. Latin American psych, 90's Houston rap, 70's British free jazz--you know you want it!
