Music Shit / The Boards

HOLY SHIT!  Shaun lent me this CD by OG Salt Lake punkers, The Boards a week or so ago and I finally got around to listening to it today -- needless to say I am floored.  I don't remember the last time something knocked me off my feet like this.  I get the feeling like they were trying to sound British and, thankfully, failing, 'cause at times there are dumbastic elements of Cockney Rejects or The 4-Skins without actually being Oi; sometimes they have the musicality of Crass, all scrappy and falling apart while coming together at the same time, with occasional weird time signatures, but not "prog weird time signatures", no, more like "we just stumbled into this time signature 'cause we're morons but it sounds good so we'll stick with it for a couple seconds 'til we figure out how to get back to where we started."; moreover, I'm reminded a lot of all the fucked up Euro-punk like PVC, Big Balls & the Great White Idiot, Tampax, and especially Hubble Bubble, as the guitars occasionally sound like computers malfunctioning, the drummer's learning as he goes, background vocals drift in and out, and there are times that I couldn't tell you what, if any, language the singer is yelling in.
Unfortunately it was only released on CD, and it's now out of print through the label, but it seems as though cdbaby.com has some.
They have a MySpace page - http://www.myspace.com/theboardsofutah - but there are only two songs on it, and while they are good songs, they do not highlight the best elements of this band.  Do yourselves a favor and find a way to hear the songs "Microscopic" and "That's Right".  You will thank me.

Every trainee commits to two "Training Wheels" slots, which are Thursday mornings from 3:30 to 5:30 a.m.  This morning was my first -- ugh! -- and it was pretty disaster-ridden.  Most painful was the fact that the sound coming off one of the turntables was super fuckin' quiet and I was not able to fix it, which really threw off my rhythm.  Oh well!  That's community radio, I guess!
