Music Shit / Re: Hanging Coffins?
« on: July 23, 2019, 09:41:06 AM »
I feel like all the people who would really know don't really post on here anymore. There was a demo CD-r of a band Cade was doing after Hanging Coffins from a band called (I believe) Little Pilgrims that was really good. Much more punk than Hanging Coffins, kinda reminded me of something that would've fit on the 'Keats Rides a Harley' comp a la early Leaving Trains. I think he's playing with Sleeping Beauties now. Dude used to post here under the name parrot squadron, so might chime in.

The Brains s/t - cheap new wave LP out of Atlanta ca. 1980 boasting slightly heavier production than is typical of this stuff, with a vibe landing them somewhere between The Cars and the first couple solo Iggy albums. At least 50% excellent, especially the slower songs, with the rest being at least decent. Worth the $5 I paid.

I still maintain that even with a shitty lineup, if they just played start to finish Process Of Weeding Out, everyone would walk away pissed, and, well, mission accomplished.

I would honestly take that or the theremin to the above.

Some band called Black Flag is playing here in a few weeks, I got free tickets and I'm wondering what to expect. Will it be an hour of Greg Ginn and his theremin? Will I leave feeling like I have... nothing left inside? As though... I've had it? Or will I come to find that my reservations are all... in my head?

I mean, it's free, so... who gives a shit, right?

Paging Russ Romance...

Non-Music Shit / Re: Movies I've been watching

Midsommar was pretty derivative, but I thought it was well-done. I appreciated the fact that the cult were blonde-haired, blue-eyed Swedes instead of people of color, some parts were outright funny in their absurdity, and the tripping imagery was some of the most authentic I've seen on screen. And yeah, it overall looked and sounded great. I'm also too easily swayed by aesthetics.

I also really liked Us too, though. I thought there was some great commentary on class in there.

It is really annoying that the majority of modern horror is so reliant upon pastiche, however, and think it would be nice if more writers / directors would actually try to craft their own thing instead of trying to just pay homage to tried and true classics. Goodnight Mommy is probably the most standout horror movie I can think of from the last few years, as far as being non-derivative.

Total Sex by Sadist, a collection of almost all the MCR band's stuff.  This is the crown jewel of the MCR catalog!!!!  Sad to see no one is hype on it, probably just because they are on MCR and not ADK or dogma, etc

Great band. I've got that 'Onapet' flexi (and could use a sleeve for it), but haven't heard much else. Features a pre-Masonna Maso Yamazaki, FWIW.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Punk Books

It is jammed with crappy bands to the max. Flipper get a 20 page treatment which is actually pretty cool. None of the artier stuff Ryan mentioned would be considered as Punk by the authors.

Good to know. Thank you!

Has anyone read 'Gimme Something Better: The Profound, Progressive, and Occasionally Pointless History of Bay Area Punk from Dead Kennedys to Green Day'? And if so, how in depth does it go into the 80's scene? Is there plenty (any?) coverage of Flipper or Chrome, of stuff like Church Police, Black Humor, Subterranean / Ralph Records, etc.? Can't say I really care one iota about the Gilman era, but the late-70's / early-80's Bay Area is one of my favorite scene,s and outside the article that Ryan Wells wrote for TB, and subsequently Z-Gun a decade or so ago, I feel like there isn't much ink spilled on that stuff.

The Freakers Ball, vol. 3
On this week’s episode, we pay tribute to some of the pioneering LGBTQ figures in punk, honor two fallen greats (Alan Secher-Jensen, bassist of Venom P. Stinger; Roky Erickson, singer/guitarist of the pioneering 13th Floor Elevators), and spend the latter half the show groovin in the name of Pride by visiting some songs you might have heard in the 80’s leather bars in New York & Berlin, mixed with ground floor Chicago house, and industrial pioneers veering into dance territory.

Jayne County & The Electric Chairs - Paranoia Paradise
Divine - Born To Be Cheap
Bags - Survive
Germs - Our Way
The Dicks - I Hope You Get Drafted
Big Boys - No
Venom P. Stinger - Walking About
Venom P. Stinger - Venom P. Stinger
Horror Planet - Paramecium
Meat Puppets - Reward
Painted Willie - Kill It
Chronophage - Racing
Warm Bodies - Psychic Connection
Hash Redactor - In The Tank
Roky Erickson & Bleib Alien - Red Temple Prayer (Two Headed Dog)
The 13th Floor Elevators - Never Another
The 13th Floor Elevators - (I’ve Got) Levitation
The 13th Floor Elevators - Fire Engine

Brian Eno - Fever
