I'll have 4 days in Hong Kong, a month in Indonesia and a week in Japan...
Sounds like a great trip!
I've been to Lombok & Bali, but it's been too long since i been there to give useful up-to-date advice.
As others have said, avoid Kuta. Further north it's much nicer. Also, the interieur of bali has quite a stunning landscape. Lombok was/is much more laid back. Even Kuta on Lombok is relaxed and not too touristy. I also liked the Gili islands when i was there, but you could argue that it is backpacker hell (lottsa young European & Australian backpackers there).
I regret that i didn't take one of those boat trips to the more Eastern islands when i was there. There's very much affordable 3-5 day boattrips on offer that're going to Flores, Sumbawa, Komodo (Komodo dragons!!!) and such with world-class snorkelling stops on the way. I'd definitely look into that if i were you.
For surfing, Inside Grupuk on Lombok is a wave that i'd recommend to beginners/intermediates. Very mellow right-hand point break on not shallow not-rocky/reef ground that is easy to surf and very very good:

Have fun. I'm very jealous.
