Music Shit / Re: Best Live Albums

yeah both heroins are sick.  so is ocean.  way better than that loaded outtake or whatever it is.  oh and the last part of new age is so fuckin epic, with those toms and shit.  i bought the reunion cd a long time ago and could barely listen to a whole song.  i listened to it with a friend and then returned it.  lou kinda sounded like he was purposely tryin to make it suck, singin everythin all half assed.  kinda like what dylans been doin lately.
I'm with you, man.  "Ocean" is gorgeous on that record.  The whole band dynamic on '69 is a total revelation after hearing the studio records.
Re: Live 1993: Yeah, I think Lou feels like he has to "reinvent" or "reinterpret" his older material so he fucks with the phrasing; but instead of sounding fresh or spontaneous it just sounds like shit.
I got a kick out of seeing the band play, though.  There's so little documentation of the original Reed/Cale/Morrison/Tucker band that I found it interesting to watch them interact, albeit about thirty years too late.  There's also something endearing about seeing a bunch of old fucks still plying their trade with a modicum of dignity an' grace.  I watched that video around the same time I saw Trad Gras och Stenar, Incredible String Band, and Television do reunion sets; each of those was awesome in a way, in part 'cos those dudes were SO FUCKIN OLD.   I never realized it was Lou playing those wicked leads.  Sterling was the coolest, though.

i think it was a mix of both.  maybe it was two shows on one cd?  its hard to say cuz it was burned.  im pretty sure they played black angels at one point, and waiting for my man with piano.  maybe all tomorrows parties too.  listening to live 69 made me appreciate a lot of those songs a lot more.

Oh, okay.  The one live boot I have with Nico is called 1966; it's two long, very noisy, droning jams.  Pretty nice.  Not the same one, probably.

There's a cool rundown of VU bootlegs with cover images here: http://members.aol.com/olandem/bootlp.html

I passed on a copy of Sweet Sister Ray a few years back; that was stupid.

A couple of the guys in the Fells were really into Live '69 in their early days and turned a bunch of us on to that record.  Hearing those songs live made VU seem less mythical, more "real."  The version of "Heroin" on there is especially great.

I remember thinking at the time that the VU reunion CD from '93 totally sucked; but years later I watched the video and really loved it.  Anyone else enjoy it?

i used to have a cdr of a vu boot from way early on that had not only live piano but im pretty sure nico was on it too.  it was pretty sick.  does anybody know what that is?  i lost the cd years ago.

Was it songs or long, noisy jams?

We were just listening to Live '69 last night for the first time in years.

Crystal Stilts 7" mentioned elsewhere is pretty good too.  No relation.  Good name.  Comes with a little stamped piece of tin foil.  200 copies, I think.

Ever since Lil' Acapulco II was born a few months back, my music appreciation time has gotten ever shorter and more sporadic.  There's some iPod time on the train, an hour or two of turntable time after work, and Saturday nights at the station.  But Sundays are pretty much the only days when I get to kick back and listen to records for hours on end; it feels so good!

This morning I listened to the archive of last night's Acapulco Dance Party.  It's a good one!  I wasn't crazy about the last couple of broadcasts, but this one's good enough to load onto the iPod for the week.

Highlights:
Artistic Decline - I picked up their lone LP, Random Violence, a couple of days ago.  I'd never heard of it but it bore all the hallmarks of a killer LA punk record, incl. excellent Pettibon cover art.  Recorded in '83 but released four years later, it's a really intelligent and intense piece of Wire-inspired punk, as filtered through a SoCal / early SST sensibility.  A really nice surprise.

Rel Rex - These guys have an amazing cut, "Program," on a comp entitled B9 Bis: Belgian Cold Wave '79 - '83.  This track outshines the relatively more familiar names on the CD (Polyphonic Size, Pseudo Code, Front 242, et al.), which includes a bunch of spotty instrumentals.  This is one of the hippest "wave" cuts I've heard, down to the completely anachronistic, out-of-nowhere fuzzed-out psych gtr solo in the middle.  Thanks for the burn, Daniel!

The Hamsters - Mancunian contemporaries and friends of The Fall and Joy Division.  I played their song "Ole Spain," an amazing little obscurity from '81 built on a primitive, flamenco-tinged guitar melody.  It's on a comp called The Disparate Cognoscenti, a bunch of odds and ends from Cog Sinister.

Black Sun Ensemble -  Their first LP, from '85, is a low-key psych masterpiece, one of the finest records ever to issue from Arizona.  To my ears it easily matches the Sun City Girls at their most lyrical.  The vinyl eluded me for years, but I finally got my hands on a copy on a recent visit to Tucson w/ the family (thanks again, AA!).  I never went in for the desert mysticism / desert kitsch that runs through a lotta music from Arizona; but this record somehow manages to conjure a majestic, distinctly "Southwestern" vibe even as it borrows from foreign keys and traditions.  Mutant Sounds posted the entire album not too long ago, I think.

The Void side of the split, in its entirety.

* * *

Now we're listening to the "Aclamados" LP by Los Paulos, an excellent Chilean group of the Nueva Cancion era who recorded for RCA Victor.  Before that, I played a couple of early Cecil Taylor sides back to back.  Acapulquito seemed to like it!  Then he pooped and fell asleep. What else?  Hmm... Ah, yes: Cheveu, Die Kreuzen, The Specials, VU's Live 1969, Galwad y Mynydd

Oh, man -- The Who.  Agreed, My Generation and the early singles are solid; otherwise, what a god-awful band.  What a bad influence.  Whatta buncha goobers.

I totally agree.  Get Back / Earmark use shitty-ass, glossy cardboard that looks really, really tacky.  Even the spines look shitty.  I hate those things.  And the gatefolds are the worst!  I stopped buying them completely a couple of years ago.  That said, if you're after great sound, you won't be disappointed.

Is the "original" issue of Cyborgs really fetching a lot of money these days?  It used to always turn up at the 'FMU record fair.  I guess the reissue must have brought it to more people's attention and brought the price up.  I've got one of the OG's, but I'm missing the insert with Edgar Breau's liners, which I remember as being pretty funny / hateful.

Only trouble with manual turntables is falling asleep while the record's still playing.

that wouldn't happen if you stopped listening to siltbreez shit.
Ba-zing!  BURN!!!  Uh, everyone on this board who's either signed to Siltbreeze or listens to Siltbreeze records all the time, take heed: Bazooka Joe's got something to say to you.  Me, I'm strictly an ECM / Wyndham Hill man.
ive never fallen asleep while playing a record, its like cooking to me, you have to pay attention, if im that tired i just play mp3s or co
ok in the microwave.
Wait 'til you hit thirty and / or work a full-time job and / or have a kid.  Ain't no thing.  See, the missis and I like to listen to our Salsoul Orchestra records while we make hot, Latino love, which due to our demanding schedules we can only do in the evenings, throughout the weekend, and on holidays.  After about our fifth or sixth simultaneous climax, we fall immediately into a deep, restorative slumber.  Listening to our iPods would be both awkward and, frankly, hazardous, what with all the the passion and the fucking.  One option I've considered is picking a different locked groove off the RRR-500 LP every night, but that just makes her all impatient.

Chiming in on turntables.  After using one of those cheapie Technics semi-automatics for years, I opted for a 1200 clone made by Audio Technica.  For a while, J&R Music World was selling refurbished models for $130.  Mine is virtually identical to the Technics, and I've not been disappointed yet.  It also plays 78s.   I like the heft, and I like the versatility of fully manual operation, adjustable tracking, changeable headshells.  The wheels of steel are forever, dogg.  Only trouble with manual turntables is falling asleep while the record's still playing.

I love you, you big dummy.

I'd see beefheart reunion in a heart beat.  There was a beefheart cover band in Athens, GA that was actually really good, they had rockette morton play with them a couple times.  GREAT

It's probably for the best if the Cap'n stays home given the shape he's in.  The Magic Band did some "reunion" shows a few years back, w/ Drumbo doing the vocals.  Judging from the CD, it was pretty sweet.  The two "tribute" bands I've seen have been awful, and the one with Gary Lucas is just "ehh..."

And to think I wasted so much time thinking Pet Sounds was the end-all-be-all of their career.

I like Wild Honey a lot, too.

My favorite is Friends, from '69.  With the exception of Smile, I've listened to it more than any other Beach Boys record -- it's as sweet and rich as anything from their '60s catalog.  "Busy Doing Nothing" is one of Brian's best songs.

I bought the Beefheart Dust Sucker thing when it came out on CD a few years ago, found it pretty disappointing.  It's only a few of the Bat Chain Puller tracks, I think; and I remember them sounding better in their Shiny Beast versions.

Reatard / Re: Join the Jay Reatard Singles Club!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the White Stripes.  Remember?  Those guys started on Sympathy and were in heavy rotation on MTV within two years.  That was a much bigger leap, I think, than Reatard going from Matador to TRL.

In 2001, who would have thought that gooberish indie bullshit like the Arcade Fire would debut at #1?  A number-one record nowadays means a couple hundred copies sold.  More examples... um, Andrew W.K. in '02... oh, yeah, Bjork trolling around for talent in the beardo underground, picking up Brian Chippendale and Chris Corsano on the cheap.

It's not like Jay Reatard's writing Electric Eels songs.  Dude's catchy, and he's got some shtick going for him, no?  I wanna hear a cameo on the next Mariah record.
